Question for cloth diapering mamas

Recently we've been finding that some of our cloth diapers just aren't fitting right anymore. Ava has been having so many leaks. We have a whole variety of different brands and styles. I had to put several away as they were too small.

Ava is only 24 pounds but she's very long. I used to love the fuzzibunz but now they are leaving red marks on her skin, and I have let the elastic all the way out too. We also have some bumgenius, kawaii, alva and rumparooz. I've actually been using more covers with prefolds or thick inserts but they are so bulky on her.

Any suggestions? What kinds do you find work the best at this age?

We still use disposable at night as she is such a heavy wetter.

  • We've been using the Bumgenius Freetimes exclusively, and I can't recommend them highly enough.  I even have to put mine in the dryer (no to dry them outside or inside), and the elastic is still in great shape.  The Freetime is an AIO, and we have the rise open all the way.

I'm sorry you are running into this.  I assume you're looking to expand your stash?  If so, I actually found some brand new on ebay when I was building for great prices.  Hopefully you can find some for a great deal!

  • I use these:

I put a liner in them and never get any leaks.  My DD is 24 pounds as well, but she's been wearing the same diapers since she was about 10 pounds.  She was a chubby baby but now she's tall and thin.

  • We use BG 4.0 one size pockets and I've noticed some of the elastic is not as tight as it used to be. We also have Charlie Banana one size pockets and they fit her pretty well still. When we are home we use medium GMD prefolds trifolded in a swaddlebee's simplex cover. I liked my thirsties covers better but she outgrew the size 1s we had and we already had the swaddlebees covers in the next size. We are still struggling with overnight; we use a microfiber insert and a hemp/bamboo insert inside a WAHM diaper and most nights I end up changing her at 3 am so she doesn't wake up soaked. We don't really have any extra money to buy more but I'd love to be able to try something different for nighttime.

  • We did similar to @MissMusic and had to change out the inserts.  We have a mix of Alvas, Bumgenius, Fuzzibunz, Charlie Banana.   We've switched to a bamboo/microfiber blend and it seems to be working.  Significantly less leaks.

  • Thanks everyone! @mightybee and @missmusic I'm going to order some of those hemp inserts and try one on the bottom. Hopefully that will help. We have one of those hemp inserts from the link you posted MM, I have no idea why we just have 1. But I'm ordering more :)
  • I just found two hemp inserts in Mira's closet. Any special instructions for prepping them?
