Worrying about the ingredients in vaccines drives me a bit nuts. It's a symptom of the shit science education in this country.
Like flipping out because there's aluminum. It's an aluminum salt. Not the metal. Panicking about it makes as much sense as stressing about table salt because there's chlorine in it... The same ingredient as chlorine gas!!!1!1
The complete lack of knowledge about chemical names always astounds me. Just because there's a "scary" element in the chemical name (like, say chlorine), doesn't mean that the chemical is harmful. Again, the difference between chlorine gas (mustard gas) and sodium chloride (table salt). The only thing they've got in common is the element chlorine. One is nasty shit. One you used today. Worrying because the element aluminum is part of the chemical compound is silly. Elements can make up very safe or very unsafe compounds. Their existence in a molecule doesn't make the whole thing unsafe. And similar names don't mean similar properties, like the difference between ethyl mercury and methyl mercury I linked to earlier. One is handled and passes from our body. The other "bioaccumulates" and should be avoided. Similar name, very different chemicals. And yet people still flip that "mercury is in our vaccines!!!", even though it's safe and has been removed in many cases.
Or worrying about formaldehyde. People forget that it's the dose that makes the poison. Water and table salt are VERY deadly if you take too much. The amount of formaldehyde in a vaccine is NOT harmful and is easily handled by our bodies.
@RondackHiker, I'm pretty sure logic/actual knowledge like yours doesn't really work for people who are gullible/purposely ignorant enough to buy into the anti-vax stuff. It reminds me very much of the "debate" over evolution. It takes a special kind of brain to look at years and years of scientific research and just say, "but mercury!" or "but Bible!"
That's why I don't get these discussions on the Bump...anyone who needs to be convinced to vaccinate their kids by an Internet message board will probably never be convinced to vaccinate their kids by an Internet message board, so why come here with the question at all??
DS is 1DAF

It's just what my dr said. That e should wait to get shots to avoid her getting sick with her body adjusting to shots that's where I got the sick thing
What? Get sick from the shots? Confused. Has she had any? Why would your doc think this?
It's just what my dr said. That e should wait to get shots to avoid her getting sick with her body adjusting to shots that's where I got the sick thing
Are you positive your doctor has attended medical school?
This is where I'm stuck.
If the pedi does delay a shot due to illness (usually of the child), they should schedule an appointment to get it within a week or two. Not just wait for months.
From his perspective his patient wants to vaccinate and has a 9 month old who is unvaccinated during a horrific flu season and who lives in an area with little vaccination (so at high risk of measles and whooping cough) based on his recommendation.
@spapeggy my DS1 had a febrile seizure after him 4 month shots (because of his fever, not the vaccine). It was scary but he was treated quickly in the ER and sent home.
It was nowhere nearly as scary as when DS2 tested Positive for the whooping cough at 5 weeks old. We were admitted, in the PICU and told the prognosis for a premature baby his size was grim. We met with a social worker and priest who discussed end of life options for him.
It was the worst experience of my life and I rarely talk about it here but you need to educate yourself about the risk/ benefit ration of vaccines. Are there risks? Sure. But the potential and rare side effect FAR outweigh the benefits.
I could rage on about this forever. Vaccinate your kids

I just don't get it. At all. "But, chemicals!!!!11!" drives me mad and makes me want to offer them a massive glass of dihydrogen oxide (it's been found in 100% of cancers and destroys metals and causes many deaths each year... And every person with cancer/autism/insert disease here has drank this chemical).

@SpaPeggy....seriously. Think about the potential consequences here not only for your own kids who are vulnerable to preventable diseases but also for others who are compromised or too little to be vaccinated yet.
I'm so sorry you had that experience, @loveactually.
Thanks guys, he ended up being fine but we were very lucky. although the test was positive, he never progressed into the "whooping" phase which is often fatal for infants his size and age.
Insomnia, so I'm back.

I love it when you get all scientific.

Thank you for your replies. I will look more into it and make an appt in the morning. In my area it seems so normal no to vaccinate.
Don't google vaccine complications, please. It's all a bunch of fear mongering idiots. If you want real info, look up the diseases that your child could get. That should knock some sense into you.
Have you ever met anyone paralyzed from polio? Hospitalized because they stepped on a nail? A mother mourning her 3 year old who died of measles? How about the lady who has cancer and dies, not from cancer, but from whooping cough.
Obviously the people in your area are drinking the koolaid. Just say no!
Back when my BFF and I were talking about natural birth vs epidural (I have no issues with people who go natural) we both agreed we wanted epis. Her best quote ever in that conversation was, "Why would you deny medical science?!" That's all I can think of any time someone talks about not vaccinating.
I haven't read all of this thread, but I think you should get your child vaccinated. I feel like most, if not all, respectable medical doctors would encourage-if not push- vaccines.
One reason I kind of love my pediatrician's office is because when I went to an open house there before my son was born one of the women attending said that she didn't plan on vaccinating, and the doctor giving the talk said to her, "Then this is not the practice for you." She got all huffy and left.
I'm not a doctor or an expert, but it's not hard to see that the evidence supports vaccinating. Having a dream or a feeling, or whatever else is not sufficient reason to avoid vaccinating your child. Not to mention it puts everyone else at risk.
It drives me kind of batty that so many people who are so uneducated in the medical field think they know so much more than actual doctors who study this stuff. Why would a doctor do anything so routine as vaccinations if they would cause harm to the hundreds of patients he sees on a daily basis?
Thank you for your replies. I will look more into it and make an appt in the morning. In my area it seems so normal no to vaccinate.
All the more reason to do it. When there is an outbreak in your area you'll be able to sleep knowing you did everything you could to protect your kids.
We do a slightly modified schedule (any live vaccines are given by themselves) this was something we worked out with our dr due to some family history and other personal medical concerns.
Vaccines are not a big pharma scam. They don't make big $ on them, the man who invented the polio vaccine didn't even patten it b/c he wanted it available to everyone.

Doctors don't get kickbacks for giving vaccines either.
If they do, I'm pissed because dh has given many shots and we haven't gotten a single check from big pharm.

What's sad is the actual number of peor who believe this nonsense. You would probably be surprised if you asked this question of your friends. I have a girlfriend at work who had a baby last year. He got the flu over Christmas and I asked if he had the shot. She said no, she really doesn't like to vaccinate babies...she said a friends kid had special needs due to shots and it scared her. She and her husband are both teachers/coaches with six kids between them. Her reasoning blew my mind. I never would have put her in the unvaccinated camp.
We did a delayed schedule, as DS's bio brother had a reaction as an infant, so we wanted to space things out a bit to be safe. But DS is fully vaccinated, including the flu shot.
I'm a little shocked that Idaho is as high as it is, and I'm relived/shocked that Washington isn't redder. It seems like most of the moms I know here don't vaccinate.
OP, did you ever see the local story of the little boy in Oolagah that was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis (from drinking from the school water fountain, I think)? The awful things that he and his family have had to go through and he will never look or function the same. It's heartbreaking! Dr. Ross at St. Francis South is awesome, get a new ped!
We live in Virginia but are trying to move to Michigan to be close to SDs. What the hell is going on up there? Yikes!
Fully vaccinated including the flu. DS had some of his vaccines late because he was sick so so much when he started daycare (it felt like he had RSV for three months straight) but they did have us schedule a nurses visit within a week of recovery both times.

I am fairly certain that WA averages out to that color but that there are hugely red areas. Non-vaccination is so freaking common here.
Yeah, I'm sure. I also think that it's probably in specific hot spots like around the sound, Olympia, Port Angeles, ect. However, not as much in Eastern Washington. Doesn't help that all my mom friends are all kind of "hippie" mom since they are from my babywearing group. So it's probably just the circles I'm in as well.
I just don't get it though. What part of hippie = fucking idiot?
Cuz organic foods and shit. I don't fucking know. Most of these woman don't take their kids to actual doctors. So there is that. They do things "natural" and see naturopath doctors.
I didn't read EVERYTHING on here---just answered the poll. But, please VACCINATE your kids fully. Since DD's leukemia she is not allowed to get any live vaccines. (luckily I think most of the live vaccines she got before she was sick). But please vaccinate!
@nanaosaki_06 my daughter's pedi is in your area and sh said the majority of her clients don't vaccinate. She is very for vaccinating and appreciates that I do my own research and ask her questions about it but also that I am very pro Vax.

How timely and appropriate! If you live in Oregon, you might want to GTFO.
Well shit. Good thing I'm peacing outta Portland this summer. I can't say I'm surprised though.
When you consider that 2/3 of the state lives in the metro area, it really isn't surprising at all. I have an acquaintance that doesn't even take her kid to the pediatrician at all, ever, and plans to "no school". I don't get it, but it's really not uncommon here.

I had to google, because I'm not really sure. Apparently it's actually called unschooling. From wikipedia:Unschooling is an educational method and philosophy that rejects compulsory school as a primary means for learning. Unschoolers learn through their natural life experiences including play, household responsibilities, personal interests and curiosity, internships and work experience, travel, books, elective classes, family, mentors, and social interaction.
