October 2014 Moms

2nd, 3rd or more time moms...

What do you want to do different with this baby?

Im not sure Ill be quite as quick to offer a pacifier this time.
Also, forget the bassinet. I want them in their own crib right away. Transitioning was a pain last time.

Re: 2nd, 3rd or more time moms...

  • I have to cut out dairy and soy two months before des bc I have got 2 then 3 weeks early and my last one still can't tolerate either (FPIES) and I'm doing cloth from the very beginning instead of waiting a month. Besides that it'll depend on the baby for any other adjustments.

  • I know this time around that I will have to boil my bm stash before freezing (high lipase).  Other than that I don't think there is much I plan to do different.

  • I'll definitely be faster to bed share if sleep is as crappy as it was last time. I'd like to have a nice safe place set up for it ahead of time. I'd like to try to keep up with giving a bottle.

  • I want to try harder to breastfeed. I EP for 8 months, and it was not what I wanted but I was glad to give him the breastmilk in any way. I want to really push myself to BF.

Thats funny. I EP for 8 months also and want to EP again for at least the first 6 weeks and go to formula. I have no desire to BF. Good luck to you tho!
  • I plan to use the EASY method for sleep training (our 12 month old still doesn't know how to sleep!) and definitely breastfeed much longer this time around.

  • I'll start a sleep training routine sooner. The first 10 weeks were extremely difficult last time and as soon as I started a routine, we were both happier and I recognized DS' needs better.

  • I plan to advocate for myself more in the hospital. I want to meet with a lactation consultant immediately and bring a pump home. I had major problems with BFing and had to stop due to low production.

  • Mine has more to do with when he or she is older. I really want o put more effort into homemade baby food and making the transition easier from just breast milk to food and breast milk.

  • Next time, I plan on offering more (and bigger variety) of solids between 6mos and 1 year. For some reason, I didn't for Nat and I think it would have helped her be less picky.

  • I don't think I'll EP for as long. Switching to formula was such a huge stress reliever! More of a routine, this time. Not that we didn't have one, but I think we can do better! While the vibrating/music making bassinet was a life saver, I'd really like to avoid that this time to make transitioning easier. That being said...whatever the heck lets us all function! Lol.

  • I want to attempt homemade baby food which really stems from a desire to just cook more at home...I'm not a huge fan of cooking to be honest.

I EP-ed for 6 mths with DD1 but with DD2 I went straight to premie formula because I was on lots of medications and having a lot of testing done so, now that I will be in the comforts of my own home I will attempt EP-ing again and I am hoping to make it through the entire first year!
  • I don't really have specific that I'll do differently, it'll just depend on baby. I was much more laid back with DS2, I'm not really stressing about baby 3.

This is me too.  I was pretty laid back with DD, and I can already tell I'm probably going to be more so with this one.  I'm just crossing my fingers that this baby is as laid back and easy as DD was and is!

  • I'm pretty relaxed and easy going, so we will do whatever works, but I am going to try cloth diapers this time.  I wanted to last time, but was talked out of it.

I will also try to BF again - I was unsuccessful last time because of low production (I was excited the day I pumped 1/3 oz!)  I don't drink a lot of water, which may have been my problem - so I am trying to rectify that.

  • The only thing I'll do differently with this baby is proactively eliminate dairy from my diet half way through the third tri. B had horrible reflux and when I eliminated diary (EBF) from my diet and he finally got the right does of meds, he was a different baby.

  • DH and I are talking about not even offering a pacifier.  DD has been so attached that we still haven't gotten it away and she is 2.  Also, I will cosleep/bedshare if it means getting more sleep.

  • I want to get an arm's reach cosleeper and nurse lying down at night instead of getting to sit in a rocking chair in the MOTN for 22 freakin' months like I did w/#1.  What was I thinking?
  • I will EBF this time. I was young and naïve and didn't ask for the help I needed to know how to properly do it the first time. I will also baby wear more so I can do day to day things, including play with ds.

Another thing I learned the hard way is to back up pictures on a CD or USB. I didn't do that and my laptop crashed years ago so I lost a couple hundred pictures of DS.

  • I'm so happy to see that so many of you want to try hard to breast feed.
I'm gonna cloth diaper this time around. I'm not saying about sleep routines but I'm not going to cosleep as long as we did. It was hard to get her out of the bed more than it was too get her sleep.

  • I'm going to have more of a say in everything.  I lived with MIL when we had DS, and any time I turned my back, she would do exactly what I told her not to.  All of DH's family who came to visit (daily) did the same.  I was so powerless.

We live in a different state now, so what I say is the final say, and there is no one to do otherwise.  Our sitter CD and still BFs her 3 year old.  I am comfortable and confident that she will comply with any crazy, crunchy-granola requests I may have this time around.
  • I am going to self advocate more and delegate. There are lots of hands to help with chores etc that there is no reason I should feel like I have to do it all especially since I will still be working.

Oh and I want to make about a zillon freezer meals.

I did this a couple weeks before I had DD and was SO glad I did. Ive already made a few to get me through any m/s I may have. I never wanted to cook last time cuz it made me feel sick. So even if I dont get sick this time Im sure there will be days I dont feel like cooking.
  • @raesofsunshine1, I am the same, I EPed with my son and with this baby, if bfing doesn't work out I will just switch earlier...I felt like I took too much bonding time away from my son and I.

  • Lots of fellow EP'ers here :)

I'm hoping BF'ing is possible this time. I anticipate that the extra work involved with EP'ing is going to be that much more difficult with a 17 month old running around.

I didn't babywear at all with DD. I'm going to give it a try this time so I can get more done.

  • Not rock this baby to sleep. Hope to make it to 12 months BF instead of the 9 and 7 months I made it with DD and DS. That's about it

  • I nursed DD to sleep every night and nap and it turned into being up every hour nursing her back to sleep. I still plan to nurse but I want to lay this baby down drowsy from the start so he/she can learn some self soothing early. Not that I would ever let a newborn CIO, but if he or she is content to fall asleep without nursing all the way to sleep, that would be amazing.

  • I think I'll just be way more relaxed this time around. I will try harder to bf as well but if it doesn't work I won't feel so guilty. Also no rock and play this time , going to have the baby sleep on a flat surface from the start.

  • Hmmm. Haven't really thought about this too much yet.

I want to work a lot harder at breastfeeding. We had a poor latch with DD and she lost a pound in her first 3 days of life. This scared me shitless so I switched to EP and did that for 4 months. This time, I want to find a LC that I trust before birth and work with that person exclusively.

I want to start LO on a sippy sooner. We didn't really push the issue with DD until she was almost 10 months and she was SO resistant and picky. I'm going to try to start around 4-5 months.

This is more me, but I want to do more prenatal yoga and kegels so I can hopefully have a quicker, smoother labor (I pushed for 5 hours).

  • I wouldn't do much differently. Things were not perfect, but they all felt like good decisions.
I think the one thing I will definitely do differently is go out more with #2. With DS- I was literally nursing all.the.time, so I was "afraid" to go anywhere and have to nurse or have manage the baby at a restaurant etc. That was bat-shit crazy! I had a nursing cover so?!?and now after having a 2 1/2 yr old in a restaurant..ha ha ha...a newborn sounds amazing to take out in that handy dandy carrier or to wear him/her :)
