Third time around and I finally had my first gushing water experience. Thank God for leather couches, hardwood floors & a DD who wasn't totally skeeved out by amniotic fluid all over her PJ pants.
Not gonna lie, I'm petrified. Just hanging out in L & D waiting for labor to start!
Update: Elodie Ann was born at 2:11 a.m. after just under 3 hours of labor. She's 7 pounds, 13 ounces and 19.5" long. Elodie shares a birthday with her great grandpa!
My water broke at 9:30 p.m. I was sitting on the couch and was caught so off guard that I jumped up and said, "What the hell?" Fluid was everywhere. Got to the hospital about 45 minutes later and was not contracting yet. At that point, I was 3 cm and 60 percent effaced. We walked the halls and it only took a few minutes to get the contractions going. They started around 11:15 p.m.
Contractions very quickly went from every 5 minutes or so to every 2 or 3 minutes, and got very uncomfortable very quickly. I asked for an epidural, and the nurse checked me again and said I was at 5 cm and that I would go quickly if I wanted to try to hang on and not have an epi. I stuck it out for a couple more contractions, each much stronger than the last, and then said forget it, I want the epidural!
After the epidural was put in, I was checked again and was 6 cm. The epidural only fully took on my left side. I was left with pressure on the left side and some pain on the right side, but the pain was very reduced and much more manageable. However, very quickly, I got really uncomfortable again. I called the nurse and asked if there was a bolus button that I could push and she said yes, but wanted to check me again before I got the extra meds. She checked and said, "Your baby's head is right there. I want you to stay lying flat on your back while I go get the midwife. Do not push yet." Talk about SGR.
I suddenly got the shakes and was pretty miserable with the pain, but having had a natural birth before, I know it could have been much, much more intense. The midwife had been sleeping nearby and was there within minutes, and gave me the go ahead to push soon thereafter. Elodie was born after only about 3 minutes of pushing. Really, she could have been born faster, but I was too chicken to push very hard because I could feel so much and was afraid of it hurting more.
Fortunately, I didn't tear this time and did not get an episiotomy. It is so, so, so much better to not be sitting here with stitches in my nether regions!
Elodie initially had trouble with keeping her temperature up and with low blood sugar due to my gestational diabetes, but those issues have resolved and she is now content in my arms. She has already nursed like a pro.she looks just like her brother, but with a lot more hair! We are so very much in love.
