Siblings sharing rooms

We are thinking of putting off the addition for a year and having the kids share a room till next summer. My toddler still wakes once a night about half the time and the baby wakes twice a night most of the time. Is it doable? Or should I wait? I can't really picture the logistics of it.

The other option is to keep her in the finished basemt guest room which is where I've been sleeping too, but I miss my bed and I miss sleeping next to my wife! But having her there feels so far away. I couldn't hear her if the monitor died for example, which has happened a few times since she was born.

I don't have mom experience. ..but I know my brother and I shared a room for at least 7 years.

  • My brother and I shared a room but we were a bit older (started when I was 3 and he was 5) and weren't waking as far as I remember. we did play quite a bit at night which I remember always getting in trouble for, so you may have a harder time putting them down. I think the night wakings may be disruptive too and I'd personally probably wait until they were a bit older to put them in the same room unless they are sound sleepers when they are asleep.

Just this past weekend we stayed in a hotel room with our two kids. We each slept with one of them in separate beds and once one was up it pretty much guaranteed the other was up.

  • Ds1 and ds2 room share. They don't wake each other up most of the time. We really don't have a choice but it's been working out well. I put the baby to bed first or put my 2 year old down and bring my already asleep baby up. I can't imagine putting them down at the same time though.
  • You could just put her in your bedroom that you share with your wife?

That's what I do but I know room sharing doesn't work for a lot of people

I wish!! Our room is technically 10x12 but its kinda shaped like Utah, with a cutout in the corner. We barely fit a queen bed, a tallboy dresser and 2 tiny bedside tables.

  • Our twins room share and the best thing we did was have a night where they cried. It sounds horrible, but for the most part now they sleep through the other one.

  • We plan on making E and future baby #3 share when the time comes. E has the biggest bedroom in the house so it's logical to go that way.
  • My 4 + 2 year old share. And have asked us to share with baby - which was a possibility until baby stopped STTN. My kids sleep through each other for the most part. Most of our issue comes from the fact the door won't stay ajar so we have to close it and DS waked DD when he pulls it shut. I say try it.

  • I'd say give it a shot and see how it goes. My older two share a room, but we didn't put them together until they were 2 and 4. Sometimes they wake each other up or stay up late goofing off. You might have an easier time starting this young. Room sharing has made my oldest a better sleeper because he learned to tune out his brother.

  • We are thinking of moving DD2 in with DD1 soon. DD2 still is cosleeping and nursing a ton at night though, so not sure how well it will work or how soon it will be realistically. Our rooms are only several feet a part though, so if baby awakens I can just grab her and bring her in our room. I am currently downsizing DD1's toys/stuff so there's actually room for the crib!

  • OK, I think I might give it a shot. We will see!!
