That's stupid. DD is 19 months and still in her crib! She's not coming out until she starts climbing out or she's 3 and then I'll move her. We have convertible as well so will stay with her until she moves out! Also putting baby on blankets is really really unsafe. I'm more concerned about that aspect than anything.
Well babies have been sleeping in baskets since the beginning of time, but it sounds like someone should introduce her to the wide world of intant co sleepers. It irritates me when parents don't open a book or read the internet to see what is out there.
When I was a baby my parents couldn't afford a crib so they used a laundry basket for the first bit. I purchased a crib, but would use a laundry basket if I couldn't afford anything else.
I bet she said it just bc she was jealous that you are getting a crib and she is not.
I don't really think it's horrible that her kid will be sleeping in a basket (like others have mentioned, drawers were a common option in our not so far away past).
However, I would envision her sleeping through the night to never happen if she's just going to pull her kid into bed with her. I mean, what if her kid kicks a lot a night? Forget about ever sleeping again, mama. Or if she needs to sleep train her baby? Good luck getting him to stay in her bed. My kid is almost 2, and he'll be in his crib for a while.
I'm shocked someone actually said you only use a crib for a year! Ours the side came off so we got 2 1/2 years out of it for kid #1 and expect about the same for kid#2. Worth the money to me!
I plan to use a laundry basket... FOR CAMPING!! we tent camp and will have a 3-4 month old this summer... so i plan to use a cutely covered laundry basket for that, simply because our pnp wont fit in our tent, but using it instead of a crib??? really?!?
Ugh, since this thread is 4 years old, it doesn't make much sense to keep posting, but since people are still reading it, I thought I'd add THIS article that's fairly interesting. In Finland, it's very common for infants to sleep in government provided cardboard boxes (which come full of other baby necessities and have a small mattress at the bottom so it can be used as a bed). So the idea of using something other than baby-specific furniture for sleeping arrangements isn't all that off the wall as long as it's safe (ie, no loose blankets).
My nephew was born in September and has grown out of his rock n play. So we are getting that instead of a bassinet. I do have a crib though and plan on starting her out in that and see how she does. The crib was from IKEA and cost $100. Not really that big of an investment.

My OB was telling me about how when he was a baby his parents had him in a drawer without even putting a blanket underneath him. He said when he had his kids he and his wife were both broke med students so for the first few months for each of their kids they slept in laundry baskets. Only they put weights in the bottom and cut a piece of supportive foam to fit as a sort of "mattress" for under the baby. The weights were to prevent the basket from tipping over if baby was kicking a lot. It surprised me to hear that two med students would do that but he just shrugged and said "My kids are all healthy adults now so it can't have been too bad."
Ummm WTF? I don't see how she can argue that a crib is a waste of money...ours converts to a toddler bed, twin bed and to a queen head/footboard. Technically DD could use it for 18 + years. Most laundry baskets have holes in them that baby could get their arms, legs and even head stuck in!!! She is an idiot!
Perfection. The crib DH and I picked out is a convertible crib that cost less than $200 and will literally last her until she's 18+. If your friend can't even afford that or a cheaper version (I've see convertible one for even $100) then she probably shouldn't be having a baby.
I may be missing something, but I don't see what the big deal is about using a laundry basket. I don't personally think a crib is a waste of money, but I don't really see anything wrong with using a laundry basket instead of buying a crib and a bassinet. It was very common for people to use dresser drawers for baby beds. And think of a Moses basket- looks quite a bit like a laundry basket if you ask me.
I guess it depends on the type of laundry basket you're imagining. For example the one I have at home is full of large holes that would just keep me up all night terrified that my DD would get her foot or arm caught and break it.

Edited because I just saw that this is a zombie thread from 2010. Either way, this person was a lunatic in 2010 and probably still is in 2014.
