Re: What will baby call his/her grandparents?

My mom refuses to be called grandma because she thinks it sounds old, so she goes by grandmom. My MIL is "ne-ma" because the first grandchild on that side of the family couldn't say grandma when she was little, and that's how she pronounced it, so the name stuck for all the grand kids.
  • My parents will be meme and pepe and my husbands parents..... uh, bitch and bitchette?
  • My parents will be Mommom and Pap. I know only a few other people who use Mommom in place of grandmother, but my mother's family always has, back to the 19th C is our earliest known usage, though it could be older.
My MIL will be Nana, I think (she said what she wanted to be called but now I can't remember, isn't that terrible?) and my FIL will be Grandpa. Their spouses, both recent remarriages, will be addressed by first names only. Most other adults in my child's life will be Mr. and Ms., etc.
  • Both our parents will be Grandma and Pop-Pop. We add the last name when we refer to them so they know which set were talking about.

  • In-laws are Mimi and Papa. MIL took some quiz online to find out what she should be. (I'm not surprised it rhymes with Me, Me, Me!)

My dad is Grandpa. Not sure about dad's serious gf.

My mom and stepdad are Grandma and ?.

  • My nephew calls my dad Grampy. I will be excited to see what our little one calls him, kids are great at coming up with their own words/names/pronunciations! My mom has said she would like to be called "Oma" but I honestly can't remember what language/culture that's from. I think it's most fun to see what the kids come up with themselves; their pronunciation of whatever we try to teach them can just be precious!
  • My parents are Grammie and gramps. His mom is grandma. She didn't want that because the rest of the grand kids call her something else. We think its dumb. She still tries to force it on us 4 years later!

  • My parents are nana Lynn and pops and hubby's parents are nana T and pop. We still have grandmas living in both sides so we also have a Gran, MawMaw, Grandma , and a Granny and PawPaw. My granny provides out child care( which is awesome) so sometimes DS refers to everyone as Grannys
  • I'm hoping they'll all just go with Grandma and Grandpa, but I'm a bit concerned as of how to deal with the fact that my parents are divorced and my dad remarried, but my mom never changed her last name. Grandparents Andersen and Grandparents Null(my maiden name, lol) are how I always saw it, but would a kid be confused by having two "Grandma Null's"? or could I say "Step-grandma Null?" :/

I might not end up dealing with this problem anyways, because my mom insists that my kid will call her "Grand Ma-Maw"

My parents will be Grandma and Grandpa. His will be Grandma and Granddad (that what his brother's kids already call them). We'll distinguish between the two moms by using their first names. That what we did with our grandparents growing up.

  • My parents are Nana and Grand-daddy.

MIL wants to be called Grandmother.

FIL wants to be called papa or Grandpa.
SMIL will probably be called grandma.

Great Grandma is called Gramma (last name) or Gigi.

This is super interesting.  So, question to the PPs who have both moms being grandma - how do you distinguish between the two grandmas?

My parents are already Grammy and Pappy their current 7 grandkids.  But DH's mom is already Grammy to her existing 10 grandkids.  I hadn't pointed this out to DH yet, but I was secretly stressing on how to distinguish between the Grammys.

Just to further complicate, my maiden name is the same as DHs last name - Smith.  So, calling them Grammy Smith isn't going to help.

When not physically with them they will be Grandma My Mom's Name and Grandma MIL's Name. Same will be done if both Grandpa's are called Grandpa.
Both my grandmas are called Grandma.  If we're ever unsure which one we're talking about, we say Grandma Jake or Grandma Milly.  :)

My hubby's parents want to be Grandma and Grandpa.  I think my parents do, too, but I keep pushing Heehaw and Shehaw... mostly jokingly from an old, stupid joke we accidentally made, but partly hoping it will catch on!!  :D

  • It is a hard one for us since my husband and I are fortunate to have three living grandparents between us.

My mom's name is Debbie, so we are think of "Dee Dee" and Grandpa for my dad, since that is what we called his dad.

DH's parents we are at a loss with right now MIL wants to be Grammy, but her mother is still alive and is Grammy.  So we may end up with Gram and Pops.
  • My parents haven't officially decided yet, but they are toying around with Mickey and DaDa (pronounced DayDay). My mother's name is Mary Kay so she is often called MK by many and that's a spin off of that. My father's name is David and was called DaDa for a bit growing up.

The In-laws are already Bunny and Pop to my stepson so they'll stick with those.

  • For my mom and stepdad, my DD calls them MA and PA, just because that is what she was able to say when she was young, so she made it up.

My dad is Opa, his wife refuses to go by any grandmother name because she's "too young" so she is just called by her name.

DH's dad and mom will be abuelo and abuela.

My DD calls my dad's dad "Old opa" LOL and the great grandparents are Big grandma (no idea why-she's actually quite small) and grandpa.  Nanny and Papa

  • DS started calling my dad papa on his own and calls my mom amma (his version of grandma) so that is what it has been.  DH parents live far away and we don't see them much, he will prob just call them gma (last name), gpa (last name)
  • I have 2 kids already and each one " named" our parents different. My DD called my parents Granny and Poppy and my in laws Grandma and Papa. Now my son had called my parents Neenee and Bubba and my in-laws Nana and Bumpa :)
