nosefrida: worth it?

i think i know the answer (everybody loves it and says it's a must-buy item) but for the sake of the moms who may not know about this amazing/disgusting product, let's chat about it!!

we don't currently own one.  i'm 90% sure we'll get one before baby arrives.  feel free to talk me in or out of this decision.

Re: nosefrida: worth it?

  • I bought one after many ear infections and allergy issues with my son. Best investment ever. I always had a hard time with the other aspirators.

  • I love mine! As a nurse I think those aspirators are junk, and I've tried them in several sizes. The nosefreda is a life saver in this house. There are pictures of the inside of those blue aspirators and they just aren't clean. A pt of mine told me she loved her electric snot sucker, but I've never used one, with my luck the batteries would be dead when I need it most.

  • A frida was gifted to me, so I'll give it a whirl.  The tube is long enough that it hasn't grossed me out yet.  I'll see what happens when I actually try to use it.  I'm a FTM, but have been around little ones my whole life and haven't ever had a problem with the old fashioned bulb aspirator, in case I hate the nose frida.  I just tend to clean the bulbs after every use to help alleviate the yuck that can grow inside them.

  • I registered for one after seeing countless recommendations, but I do have a question. My Baby 411 book says not to aspirate at all. Why would they not advise it? They didn't go into detail.

I teach parents how to use an aspirator with saline everyday, several times a day. The only reason I could see not to would be over aspiration causing irritation of the mucus membranes? I haven't read any studies that would make me change my practice. I would like to know what their rational is?
  • YUP!!! Way better than a bulb suction because you can generate more steady suction than with a bulb. I also teach families how to use a bulb regularly, but at home I'd pull out the nose frida first every time. I do have to say that it was too big for LO's nose until he was 3-4 months old, he was a preemie though.

  • I registered for a Nose Frida on a friend's rec.  The nurse in our baby class told us to take home the bulb the aspirate.  I'll have both and just have to feel it out.

  • Definitely worth it. And because it doesn't go in the nose like other aspirators it doesn't irritate the inside of the nose the same way.

  • Amazon has 2 versions... the regular product, and one that has an extra 20 filters for a few bucks more. Is it wise to get extra filters from the start? Are the filters single use?
  • I love our nose frida. DS had bronchiolitis at 6 weeks old and that bulb sucker gave him terrible nose bleeds.  He'd actually sleep after we used the NF and it was so much easier to use.  I tried the bulb on him the other day and there's no way it will still work for a toddler but the NF is going strong.
I'd get the extra filters for sure, those things get lost so easy and should really be changed with every cold.  That being said, we bought a box with ours when DS was born and still haven't used them all so they last a long time.

  • They work so much better than the nose bulb things.  And they're faster to use!  Also, there's a filter so no snot can get to you.

  • I actually got this as a gift at my baby shower last Sunday.  I havent had a chance to really check it out (I registered for a regular nose bulb but got this instead), but am thrilled to hear all the good reviews!

I'd go ahead and get the extra filters. I don't change the filters with every use -- more like after every incident of illness. After 2 years, I'm still not through the first pack of 20 filters.

  • So worth it!!! I honestly don't know why it grosses people out, unless they haven't actually seen it. And, on top of that, when you have a tired, sick baby who can't sleep bc they can't breathe, you would do ANYTHING to fix it.
