I do think cow dairy is over hyped. It's not a necessary food, it's not the best source of calcium, it's not the best source of vit D (it's actually just got the vitamin added to it). But it has calcium, it has fat (and young kids *need* saturated fat, and if you get organic, it has a decent amount of omega-3's), and it has protein. So, like many other foods, it can be a great, healthy part of one's overall diet when consumed in moderation. Like most real foods. (And I really do lump whole milk, cheese, and plain full-fat yogurt into the same category here.)
