How much TV time does LO have each day?

This is probably going to make me feel like an awful mom, but how much time does your LO spend in front of the TV?

Re: How much TV time does LO have each day?

  • It's on for noise...she will look at it once in a while but doesn't seem be "watching" it.
  • Loading the player...
  • For us LO doesn't really sit and watch tv, but will occasionally look at it when big sis or us are watching so I voted 15-30 min, but it's probably less than that right now. I have no problem with him watching though.

  • Usually none, but if d.h. lets me sleep in I sometimes come out to him showing her cartoons.  On those days (maybe one weekend day a week max.) she gets 30min.

None but I don't think it's horrible. We have really decreased our television watching recently.

  • He has nothing structured, but he'll sneak a peak when his brothers are watching. I have a feeling he gets much more when I'm at work and Mr. Vals is in charge. :-S

  • Okay I don't feel quite as bad as I thought I would.   I often have the TV on during the day while I am sitting in the living room with LO and she is playing.  She doesn't watch it but she will glance every once in a while.  However, I do allow her to watch one Baby Einstein video each day (~25 minutes) because she gets completely absorbed in it and I can finally get a little bit of homework done!

  • I said 15-30 - DH and I have also decreased our TV watching (except Olympic coverage, which is mostly on after baby's bedtime) - but our babysitter has the TV on all day while she's playing with him, and he only glances at the screen every now and then.
he's more interested in pieces of paper (?) and drooling everywhere...

I picked SS. During the week, none. I wake him, feed him, clothe him and were out the door. We get home from DC, and I wake him, take him from his car seat, put him in jammies and put him to bed.

Weekends, some days none. Other days, maybe as much as 4 hours.

Edit: the TV will be on in the house for four hours.

  • We have it on in the background, news, etc--DS1 will usually watch one episode of Mickey after school during the week (while I'm making dinner and DH is taking care of LO). He will watch a little sometimes but we try to engage him in other activities, even if its on in the background.

    This.
  • I put SS. She never seems that interested in the TV but especially during football season she definitely spent time in the same room as the TV and would glance at it occasionally.  She also does facetime with relatives.

  • He watches TV a lot less often now that he can sit up and play with toys. But on days he does watch, it's usually 5 to 20 minutes. And it's almost exclusively Sesame Street. He doesn't like cartoons and he doesn't like humans. He only likes Muppets.

  • I put 15-30 min because that is the amount of kids tv I put on a day (at most).  I leave the tv on all day for background noise but she rarely looks at it (I just have it on normal stuff I would watch).  I occasionally will put on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse if I need to run to the bathroom and don't want her to scream or if I need a few minutes.  Mickey is the only show she seems interested in and even then probably only a minute or two before she is back to playing with her toys.   Sometimes I just put it on so we can do the Hot Dog dance at the end.
  • At home...none.  Daycare- I have no clue.  Everytime I drop her off, her eyes go straight to it- so probably more than I'd like.

This. I've even tried to put on a cartoon for him to keep him happy for a minute while I eat or start laundry but it doesn't really keep him entertained. I was totally planning to be a no TV till 2 mom, but now I'm wishing he liked it so I could check out for a few minutes myself!

  • I really have no clue.  It's usually always on in the background, but it's kind of up high and he can't really see it all that well.  In the mornings I put him in his exersaucer and let him watch MMCH but I have no idea how much he really pays attention to it because he's usually playing with other things while he's watching.

I don't use the TV as a babysitter but if he watches occasionally, I'm cool with that.  Some of my fondest memories as a child are being able to sit back and watch a little bit of cartoons :)
  • We don't even own a tv but the secondwe are some where with one her eyes are glued! I hate those things
  • 15-30 min after his breakfast, he falls asleep with it... But this is only the days i work

  • I have the TV on all day. I need noise, or else my dog will bark at every tiny noise that happens outside. She watches it some time. I've never actually put her in front of the TV, it's just on in the back ground.

One time though she got super in to a greys anatomy rerun and would not go to sleep. I turned the TV off, and holy Crap giant screaming ensued. Turned the TV back on and she was happy. She just had to know if McDreamy picked Meredith. Then she happily passed out. Hahaha

But really, my kid sees the TV, and it's not baby Einstein or Disney. It's the today show, or sherlock. I figure my watch whatever the hell I want days are limited so I'm soaking it up. She has yet to grow a second head, so I think she's fine. :D

This exactly for us. Although I do turn it if something bad comes on. And there's a horrible murder news story involving teenagers in Houston right now that is on EVERY news hours. I mute it because the details are horrific and even I don't want to hear them anymore and I just feel horrible knowing DS is hearing it, even if he doesn't understand.

  • SS. I don't generally have it on during the day. If I do it is mickeymouse club or the like. In the evening mh has it on. However LO only pays attention to commercials.

haha I was in the middle of a sherlock episode, that she was somewhat interested in. I looked down at her an said "well, if you become a crazy murder some day, at least I will know what caused it"

  • Unfortunately he could careless about the tv. DD loved to watch Sesame Street at this age. DS is just looking for things he can put in his mouth that aren't toys.

This. We have it in and sometimes she watches. Even if I put Mickey Mouse on and plop her down she scoots around to her toys so she doesn't watch anyway.
This for us too.  DD is allowed to watch one show while I am unpacking from DC, getting dinner on the table, etc.  On the weekends, she watches more, but DS doesn't really pay attention.  He is way more interested in his big sis than the TV.

  • Half the week she probably gets zero screentime. My mom has put Sesame St on for her when she watches LO and says she will check it out some. DS gets 20-45 mins of tv during the week. On the weekends the tv is on a lot when we're home, but we aren't home that much.

Truth be told, it's not something I worry about. DS loves him some Jake and the Neverland Pirates, but he loves his books too!

  • 15-30....I have it in for background noise a fair bit, and if she's super fussy and I have to get something done, I will put on bubble guppies......she loves it!! The older kids usually each watch a show afterschool before we head out for activities, so that's where she gets a little sponge bob/ Icarly!!

  • At home we will turn on MMCH once a day in the morning on the weekends but I have a feeling he watches a shit ton of tv at MIL house on a daily basis. She seriously has listed 5-6 shows e just "loves". I don't say anything because I don't know for sure that's what is going on. I will say when MMCH comes on he gets the biggest smile on his face its pure joy watching his reaction

I usually have the tv on as background noise, but he doesn't pay any attention to it.
  • None. But we're kind of an anti-TV household. The older kids watch DVDs on the weekends sometimes. Or if DH is out of town I'll put on a DVD in the evening midweek to occupy the older kids while I nurse baby. We don't have cable or netflix or any of that, and our one TV isn't in our main living area. DH and I used to watch TV before we had kids, but we didn't like how it sucked up so much time, and you have nothing to show for it. We gradually just cut it out of our lives.
