And if you live in ATL, you should probably just ignore all the weathermen and politicians and stay home! After what happened last time, I definitely would completely avoid that mess if at all possible!

In case he does get called into work tomorrow or thursday, I've prepped him a small emergency bag with some food, fluids, blanket and pillow although I really hope he doesn't have the need for it.

Pack the hand and feet warmers too. If he has to get out for anything or if his car dies, he'll be thankful.

Yeah, everything is pretty much closed around here. We're just not equipped to handle this stuff! I'm sure this will look like nothing compared to what those up north see, but this is DS playing in his first snow.

Whoa.

I don't think so. From what they were saying on the news it looks like they are getting ice, not snow. I don't think anywhere is really equipped to handle inches of ice.

We got a half of an inch of ice and about 5 inches of snow the other day...

I understand it's totally different down that way, but it still amazes me how much people freak out.

In other words, I should probably never move south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

School has already been called for pretty much the rest of the week. We are expecting about a foot of wet snow along with ice. I really can't rememeber having that much since I was in elementary school. We are totally not equipped for snow. But on the plus side DS will get to go sledding for the first time

DH and I were saying we can't remember the last time we had more than an inch or two at once. This LO is our first, but I can't wait to take the pup out in it to play!

Well, coming from someone who was raised here in South Carolina (but born in Massachusetts).....we in the South just dont have the equipment to deal with this type of weather. The DOT does the best they can but, it is not something we have often. I learned how to drive here...so why would I know how to drive in the snow? And yes, the ice is usually our biggest problem, and no matter where you are from I dont think anyone "drives well" in ice. Not to mention not many people have 4WD vehicles down here. There is my rant....y'all

@PantherRN, the prob is that they just don't have the equipment/resources to deal with it like states that get a lot of snow/ice. It's not that people are so much freaking out over a little bit of snow or ice, but the whole area literally shuts down because they just do not have the plows/salt trucks/emergency vehicles, etc. to handle it.

DH's family is from GA and we have quite a bit of family and friends there, and the horror stories I heard last time were just crazy... It took people 12-24 hours just to drive a distance that would normally take 1-2 hours even in awful traffic... people were stuck sleeping in their cars ON the highway... just craziness!

On a related note, I'm originally from Portland, Oregon, and they've been having similar ice craziness. They have a really bad combo snow/ice storm every couple of years, and just don't have the resources to deal with it either so the city always practically shuts down for days (my mom has been holed up at a hotel near her office because she can't drive home).

I can't even imagine what kind of hell it would cause if ice hit Southern California! We can barely handle rain ;-)

Yeah, what everybody else said. It's the ice, not the snow. My neighborhood was fine, but there is a major road just off of our neighborhood that was closed due to ice. Several roads were closed. Hubby couldn't go to work because the entire county next to is was shut down and he works 2 counties away. And as they are saying, we just aren't equipped. It doesn't happen often. We have no reason to be prepared for this stuff. I honestly don't remember another ice storm around here since '94.

I second the appreciation! Thank you @salsera29! The big concern right now is power outages because they are currently estimating a 1/2" - 1" of ice, so that means down power lines (and down trees). Plus today they learned about some winds that are coming in, so that won't help. I am sure we will be okay though

my husband has been frantically preparing because I'm pregnant, it's cute.

Yeah...when they start using words like "historic" and "catastrophic" it makes me think of hurricaine sandy...and that was fucking terrible. @klillis13 can you stay at work if you have to? Like in an on-call room or something?

DH and I both work at the hospital....they are housing staff....like cattle lol. We got a room at the Marriott about 2 blocks from the hospital for tomorrow night so we dont have to drive all the way home just to drive back Thursday am.

DH and I both stayed home today just in case. My coworkers were stuck on i285 last time for 23 hours, and I wasn't risking that. We have plenty of groceries to last us like a month haha. I DID go out today for some snacks and $175 later, I'd say I'm pretty prepared for the worst! I read somewhere that Doritos can double as fire starters so that was totally justified, right?

I have to say something here... A hurricane and a snowstorm or ice storm (with 2" of ice mind you) are not even remotely close to comparable. We've had ice and snow storms up here (MA) that dumped feet of snow then inches of ice. Yes, the roads are tough to manage and we may lose power, but, no ones house was swept away by wind gusts. Or damaged due to Gail force winds.

As a northerner, I'm not sitting here telling the south to suck it up and deal with it as some have been because I know it's not your typical weather and it's hard to navigate. At the same time, i sure as hell know there's a difference between a snow storm, a hurricane and a tornado. It's an unfair comparison.

FFS you guys, SARCASM! Can some of you not take a joke? I think it's common knowledge that southern cities don't have have salt stockpiled and heavy duty plows.

Of course we all hope that everyone stays safe and warm and all of that good stuff, but let's not turn this into a pissing match.

ETA: salt and ice are not the same thing.

For all you very essential hospital staff please stay at the hospital! During hurricane Sandy a nurse at one of our hospitals literally swam then hitchhiked to work. Very dedicated but so dangerous! Stay safe southerns! I saw the predictions for power outages and its scary how wide spread it could be.

@Lola825, you're right about the damaging winds not being a factor during snow storms, but I know plenty of people who have lost their homes to iced trees falling or electrical fires due to downed power lines. We may seem petty and ridiculous down here for freaking out over a little snow, but people died two weeks ago during our storm which would have been no big deal up north. We all have issues related to weather that we aren't equipped to deal with.

It probably rubbed me the wrong way because I just had a debate over this with a friend from North Carolina. Moral of the story is these weather events are rare (ice in the south and tornados/hurricanes in MA). It's impossible for every part of the country to be fully prepared for every major natural disaster.

North, South, East or West, I think we can all agree Winter needs to GTFO already!

FWIW, 80 degrees is about as hot as I can tolerate. We open cooling centers up here at that point. That's winter for some of you.

I live in North Carolina. Well, kind of.

We vacation there every year, ive met so many great people down there. I do hope everyone in the South stays safe. Hopefully Mother Nature gets her act together and sticks to the north for snow and ice and the warm, sunny weather to the South! After all that's why I visit down there in the Winter, sheesh!

That was my point. I wasn't making light of what's happening in the South and certainly never called any of you petty or ridiculous.

South Louisiana girl here. Looks like storm is missing us just barely. North LA. has been shut down though. We definitely don't have plows, salt and whatever else you need to drive around in this weather. And as a southerner in New Orleans, I've got to say that my city in particular isn't really equipped for major hurricanes either. Yay for living below sea level. :P We don't really panic over hurricanes but as Katrina showed, our levees aren't the best by any means.
