Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How many hrs sleep @ 7 months?

DH and I just adopted a nearly 7mo little boy. I'm not sure how much total sleep he should be getting in a 24 hr period! He's still adjusting to us being his caretakers, so I'm sure he's not resting as well as he could be. Advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: How many hrs sleep @ 7 months?

  • My son is 6 months old this week and he sleeps from around 9pm to 5-7 am through the night occasionally waking for middle of the night feeding and then he is up 2 hours at a time during the day and then gets tired and takes anywhere from a 30 min to 2 hour nap and and repeat until bedtime. Hope this helps. Can you possibly talk to the caretakers before you and see what type of schedule he was on? I don't know your specific situation so… :)

  • Congrats on your baby boy! On average at this age he should be getting around 14 hours total in a 24 hour period. Every baby is different, but I use the awake times in this post... https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/3944993/it-worked-for-me-re-sleeping-babies

Both of my boys followed these times really well. In my experience good naps = good night sleep!

  • My son, Christian, goes down around 5pm and sleeps until about 7am without feedings in the middle of the night.  About 2 hours after waking up he will take a short nap and another nap in the early afternoon.  Now if I could sleep while he sleeps...
  • My LO is 7 months today. She takes a nap about two hours after she wakes for the day, then another about 2-2.5 hours later and usually another about 2.5 later. These naps are about 30-60 minutes.

She seems to be transitioning to the 2-3-4 nap schedule (nap 2 hours after waking, nap 3 hours after she wakes, and bedtime 4 hours later). If she wakes from a nap any time between 2:15-3:00 she does not want to nap and will wait for bedtime. Her naps are getting a bit longer to fit this schedule.

  • On average 14 hrs per day. This includes naps and at night time, but that's just an average. All babies are different. My LO sleeps for about 15 total hrs a day.

  • Naps during the day about 2 hours of being awake and active :) He takes 3 naps a day (usually an hour long) but sometimes the last one is questionable depending on timing!

As far as nights go bottle/bedtime around 8pm.  Now that eats more he gets up around 1 or 2 am for another feeding and then back to sleep.  We are working on dropping the second middle of the night feeding so wake time is something I never know.  Sometimes he is up for good at 5:30 sometimes 7:30.

Congratulations! I always tell myself..... all babies are different. I have so many friends who get to sleep through the whole night!!!  It will happen soon.... I hope ;)

  • I was told anywhere from 13-18 hours. DD gets 14 hours. Takes 2,2 hour naps, and sleeps 10 hours at night.
  • He should be getting 14-15hrs in a 24hr period to be healthy and well rested. These are numbers from the National Sleep foundation, which I am a member of. Good luck, I know finding the right information can be tough.
  • LO will be 7 months this Thursday and she's getting about 14 hours of sleep within a 24 hr period. She sleeps from 8:30pm - 7am, and takes two 1.5 hr naps and one 30-45 min nap.

Congrats on your beautiful baby boy!!
