Babies on the Brain

Would you relocate?

Long story short, my DH and I were talking about him possibly getting relocated for work (clear across the country).  He would be having a huge salary increase which would be good.  However, that would render my license to practice speech therapy useless and I would have to go through a lot to get licensed through a new state's standard. My DH is saying that I could be a stay at home mom out there, which I would also like.  However, I cry at the thought of my leaving my family and all my friends behind.  My family would not have the financial means to ever come out and visit us.  Also, my DD loves my mom and wants to see her everyday!  I can't imagine separating my mom from DD.  That being said, would you relocate?  Has anyone out there ever relocated and loved/hated it?  Just curious, because I don't knowanyone who has ever done this and curious for different perspectives. Thanks!

Re: Would you relocate?

  • My husband and I just moved back to our hometown after living halfway across the country for my husband's job in the military. One big reason that my husband did not reenlist is because we wanted to be near our families when we start a family.
If I was in your shoes, I wouldn't want to have to go through the process of getting my license in a new state either.

We moved 3.5 years ago, leaving behind my entire family and our friends. We are now about 4 hours from my husbands family, which is better then nothing but still a hike. The first year as awful, mostly because it took forever for me to find a job. Without a job it took a LONG time to get plugged into the community and make friends (even though we found a church right away). I had to transfer my Respiratory license to the new state, which was slow and expensive, but not completely awful. I really wish we were closer to my family, especially now that we're expecting our first child (my family's first grandchild). It's really frustrating traveling for every holiday. It was really hard when my grandfather died and it took forever to arrange for me to get home.

Something to consider - if your husband is getting a huge pay raise it could be because cost of living is much greater there.

Given the choice, I would stay where you guys are familiar and have support, especially if you're planning to expand your family soon. Comfort and security are worth more then extra money.

  • I agree, dogperson11.  If I were given the choice, I would also stay where I had a good support system.  We've moved five times since we were married five years ago and plugging into a community takes time.  If you are a really outgoing person, it would probably be more doable.

  • Nope, I would not leave my family and support system behind especially now that I have kids.

Money is nice, but it's only part of the equation for a happy life. Just a pay increase wouldn't be enough to make me move if we had a good life where we were.

  • Thank you all so much!  I feel to me personally I would rather stay with my family and friends out here.  My DH and I bought a house just 2 years ago and live overall comfortably with both of us working.  My DD loves all of her relatives and little friends and I can't imagine up rooting her for money!  I appreciate your insight/advice/opinions!

I said Adios, before we had the official word H had the job. Then again my family drives me bonkers. It is really hard having a child and no support. We made do. We became a stronger family unit.

We are talking about a much larger move. We currently live four hours from my whole family and H's mom and grandma. The next move will be 4-6 by flight.
