Birthday ideas

DH turns 30 in about 6 weeks right after LO turns one. I want to do something special for him but we are in a new town where we don't have any friends yet and we are extremely strapped for cash. He has sacrificed his career to be a SAHD so that I can work and I know he's pretty lonely in our new community. And my work means all of his needs/wants come after lo's and my job. For my 30th he got me a new camera so that I could take up a hobby and live a more balanced life. He also planned a surprise party with my friends after a day of mini golf, bowling, and dinner out. I am now living in a small town and I would pretty much need to shop online for anything and the list of possible activities is pretty limited. Do you guys have any budget friendly but special ideas for either gifts or activities?

My girlfriend made her husband a slideshow of pictures and put it on a cd for father's day one year and set it to music. It was really sweet and made me tear up. I've never done it before but I don't think it was too difficult.

In a similar fashion as PP ask friends and family to email you a picture of them holding up a word to describe your DH. Then make a slideshow of it. A friend of mine did it for her hubby and he loved it

I'm terrible at this kind of stuff. But in addition to their great ideas, you could also cook at home. Either all his favorite foods, or recreate a special meal like your wedding menu or first date dinner.
There are lots of activities that are really cheap. Hiking in a public park then a picnic? Local zoo or aquarium or museum? A day of fishing in a public lake? Biking?

Does he have an iPhone? I got DH an iPhone cover with DD's picture on it. He said it was the best gift he's ever gotten. I have a code you can use, too! For $20 if you want it.

This is a great idea. For DH's first father's day I made a shutterfly album with a bunch of pics of him growing up that were the same as me growing up that we had in our wedding slideshow. (ie each of us with our first bike, each of us on our first trip to Disneyland, all the quintessential American photo ops.) Plus I had pics from us dating, wedding, baby, and him as a dad.

If you have access to scanned old pics of him you could do a shutterfly album of 'This is your life!' You can ask his high school and college friends for pics too. It is fun the images family and friends will send that you can include. It would be fun if you can include similar pics of him as a baby to similar poses of your child as a baby.

Then maybe a coupon book for 30 sexual favors? (That sounds like a lot of work though! lol)

When I ask my DH what he wants for any occasion he says: "what every man wants- a steak and a BJ." So romantic. Buuut, when you're in a pinch...

Do you have anyone that could watch LO for the evening? I know a lot of my IRL SAHM friends are happy to get out without the kid once in awhile. Even if you're strapped for cash, you could go get ice cream or coffee or something that's not a whole meal, but is kid free. As working parents, we like to hang out with LO but I know that if I spent all day with him, I'd be happy for a few hours of a break. Your Hubby sounds like an awesome guy, btw.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas. I am looking more into each of them. I did have to say that I laughed when I read your response TJ....I am currently looking at my backyard which has got about 4-5 feet of snow in it. I am going to look more into some winter activities, but the opportunity for a bike ride or a picnic is at least 4 months away

I do appreciate the brainstorming though. It's helping me get beyond the mind block of living in a town with limited options. I think there is a place we could go cross country skiing not too far away...
