Hi All! I went in for my first OB appt. today. They did an ultrasound and found TWO sacks... two babies.
However, they were unable to find the heartbeat for baby #1. Baby #2 seemed to be fine and had a strong heartbeat. #1 was a very slightly smaller and they were unable to find a heartbeat. I'm 7 weeks. They said #1 was not viable and to come back in a week to check on #2 again, but they didn't seem too worried about it.
They said it was not uncommon, and that my body will eventually absorb the tissue
and everything will be fine.
Unfortunately, I started reading on the internet and found some 'studies' indicating that if
you have a 'vanishing twin', the baby that lives has a greater chance of
birth defects. Now my mind is worrying (even more than before). I'm 40, and this is my first pregnancy. I know it's possible that the risks of birth defects can be greater, and now reading those bits about vanishing twins and birth defects, I'm really concerned.
Has anyone here had a vanishing twin or heard of someone who has? Thanks in advance!
