Which baby products/brands should I stock up on-diaper cream, body wash, etc??

I want to stock up but am clueless. I figure it can't be that hard, I would probably assume Johnson & Johnson, but don't want to have too much stuff that just takes up space or be annoyed at having to make multiple trips to the store.

Thanks!

  • We got a large bottle of the night time Johnson and Johnson and it lasted us for FOREVER. But by the time it ran out J&J had gotten a lot of bad press about causing allergies and then there was a recall of some of their products so we started buying Burts Bees. I'd like to try California baby but it is SO expensive.

So anyway I wouldn't buy any huge bottles of wash or lotion. Instead maybe travel size versions of a few products so that you can decide what you eventually want to get a lot of.

Same thing on diaper cream...except that I have settled on favorites and that does go a lot faster, at least in our house. We love Dr. Smith's or Mustela diaper cream and Aquaphor for preventative/moisture blocking.

  • I'd buy some shampoo, body wash, and moisturizer in brands that you like.  If you find that the baby is allergic then you won't have spent too much money.  I also have my own allergies to many types of soap, so I'll already be limited.
  • No need to stock, that stuff lasts a long time. Haven't made it through my stock from my last shower (and DS is 3 1/2)
  • We use goat milk soaps and shampoos, some Aveeno products, and A&D ointment when necessary. Also, Lansinoh (or any lanolin) is great for little chapped lips/chin/cheeks. No powders, no heavily scented lotions or soaps.

  • I'm probably in the minority here but I say don't stock up on any of that.  My DS was allergic to J&J so everything we got from our shower (which was A LOT) had to be given away.  The only thing we got a lot of that we've been able to use was the A&D diaper cream.  One bottle of baby wash lasts a really long time so you don't have to go out and buy it very often.

This.  DS had horrible eczema and couldn't use most of that stuff.  We had been given a bunch at the baby shower, so I ended up giving it away.  We did buy one of each thing this time around for DD.  In the event she is allergic or we can't use it, we will just give it away.

  • Have you had a shower? We got a lifetime supply of this type of stuff! If you are having a shower I'd hold off buying anything!

  • Earth Angel Baby Mama and The honest company! Amazing products!
  • Don't get J&J. They have admitted to having cancer causing agents in their products!
  • Ah brands! Totally what you like.
I got some J&J and i am okay with it, regardless of all the bad comments i've heard about the brand.
It truly has to be something your comfortable with. Don't stock up, babies only use small amounts of the stuff. So it will take sometime for you to finish one bottle.

I do suggest getting some first aid stuff...like a fever reducer, pedialite ect.
Brands however, are totally what your okay with.

Uh that's plenty of beauty products. No more tears is not going to give your baby cancer.
Obviously, but I prefer to go the all natural route and avoid harmful chemicals where I can.

I agree with a lot of PP's about trying to use more organic / natural stuff when possible (love coconut oil for diaper rash and regular lotion) - though it's not always necessary. I have found this website invaluable when researching the safety of products for both me and my baby:

    https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/browse.php?maincat=babycare

For example I found out that the cvs brand sunblock was safer then one of the aveeno ones I was going to buy this past summer for LO.

    - also, if you're going to purchase things like infant Benadryl and Tylenol – I would try and look for ones that say "dye free"

  • I am horribly allergic to fragrances and I'm operating under the assumption that baby will be too because it is not a theory I want to test.

Recs for fragrance free stuff, preferably organic?

  • The only product we stocked up on were Bum Boosa wipes. Other than that we bought primarily Susan Brown's line because it is the most all natural we could find. For those of you talking about Burt's Bees, the baby line is safe but the regular line has much less stringent restrictions on which chemicals they add and some of their stuff is just as bad as any Estée Lauder or J&J product.
  • I am not stocking up on things but I swear by Butt Paste for diaper cream! everyone i know has used it and my BF used it for his son and its awesome and doesnt smell gross like some other kinds.

  • Anyone tried noodle and boo?

  • Don't stock up.  We received several bottles of Desitin and it only made DS's rashes worse.  We ended up using Balmex, which has always worked very well for us and isn't as smelly as Desitin anyway.

I'm in the same boat. My LOs father can't even use a deodorant if it has any trace of fragrance in it so I'm having to buy sensitive and perfume free everything just in case baby is like that too. This is what I bought for bathing her. And I love that it has a pump!

I agree with CA Baby and Babyganics
for fragrance-free products. DD had terrible eczema and these products (used sparingly) were great! Also recommend Cerave cream -- it's also fragrance-free and very thick, but gentle enough for baby.

  • I agree with pp don't stock up on any of that stuff in case of allergies.. We have a ton of lotion and Johnson and Johnson shampoo we will never use.

For diaper cream we use and have always used desitin and for shampoo we use California baby we use target brand diapers but when newborn I liked the pampers

  • California Baby shampoos, Ceravae (spelling?) lotion, and pampers products are wonderful for sensitive skin. When my son was better we switched everything to the Target brands and saved a ton of money! The Target diapers are the only ones that I felt were comparable to pampers. He peed through every Huggie we ever put on him.
  • I'm stocking up on wipes, diapers yes, but not overly so. I'll do pampers swaddlers again, huggies natural care for sure (huggies were always thicker IMO). I use J&J (gasp) but may try aveeno as well. Aquaphor baby, or aquaphor in general is awesome for preventing rash, helping rash, dry skin before lotions are suppose to be used at all, etc. Just one tube will last awhile. I won't stock up on lotions and soaps, etc.
