I would only plan on taking my dog to someone else's house if we were specifically going over for a dog play date (yes, we do that...) or if we are stopping by/staying the night on a road trip and she's with us. Even in the second case, I make sure to ask (although we probably won't stop by). I just tend to like dog people better.

@pup4gdb would you mind answering a couple training questions via PM?
    Sure! I can try :-)

  • I don't understand people that don't like dogs and consider it a character flaw. And I'm allergic. And my current dog is not a hypoallergenic breed. Dog people are the best.

One of my (many) biggest fears is that my child will be allergic to my dogs.

Don't worry too much - on allergy tests, I have huge reactions to dog and cat. I've had dogs since birth and cats since I was 5. I either stopped reacting to them or don't know what it's like to not be reacting :-) Most dog allergies can be mitigated with hand washing (most, not all). I have zero concern that my kid will be allergic or scared or won't be able to sleep because of the noisy beasts.

  • So, yeah...

Oh @Salsera29. Do you have a Pandora with 38 charms? I'm not side-eying the purse it's just really not my thing. But the sneaker-heels? I just can't handle them. Heels or sneakers, for the love of shoes pick one!

  • @Lola825...na I actually think Pandora bracelets are ugly and overpriced. And I know the sneakers are ridiculous. I just really wanted them :-) TBH I think I've worn them 3 times because they're not very comfortable.

  • DH wants DS to play football because he did. I can't think of anything more horrible than football. I think it is the most boring thing on earth. Plus, and I'm basing this opinion solely on my high school experience, football players are obnoxious as are their mothers.

Haven't read through all 6 pages yet, but wanted to chime in on this.  DH played football growing up, through college, and even a season semi-pro and as much as he (and I) enjoy the game, neither of us wants DS playing.  There is just way to much evidence about the trauma from head injuries in that sport to let DS go through that.  We're hoping to push him towards Lax.
That's another reason I'm not thrilled with DS playing football. Lacross scares me too. I remember from gym class actually putting my hands in front of my face and screaming when that ball was flung in my direction. Can you tell I'm not the sporty type?

Who the hell just brings their dog (minus service dogs) over to other people's houses and especially without asking? That is bizarre to me.
Our dog travels with us when we visit family and we have a few friends who welcome her as well.

I sure as hell wouldn't bring her without asking first though! And never for a "just dropping by" type of visit.
This. My dog is my "baby" but I would never bring him somewhere without asking first. The only store he goes in in PetSmart.

I think cravings are a real thing. At least to an extent. I am not a vegetarian, but in my non-pregnant life, I would eat meat maybe once a week.  Now, I am really craving meat and eating some form almost every day, if not twice a day.  It's not an excuse for me, because I have never even really liked meat before and now I really feel a "need" like craving for it. I attribute it to needing more iron and protein.
I totally get this. I'm not a vegetarian, but I've never been a fan of beef (I like ground beef, but not a roast or steak). I was dying for beef at one point and made beef tips one day and a meatloaf the next. I've never liked meatloaf. I also thought I was maybe low on iron or protein. I haven't wanted it since.

  • I have another one (and it's still Thursday so I'm saying it):  I have a knee jerk reaction to being called mama or mommy right now.  I'm not sure if it's because of those two specific words (vs. mom or mother) but I also think I feel like I haven't "earned it" yet.  Then again, I'm also not sure when I'll decide I have earned it (before/after birth).

I also own a couple coach purses (I've lived near the outlets and didn't realize they were such a "thing" at the time), and also a pandora bracelet that may be full of charms... also, I've bought all the charms related to places I've been (there's a "erdbeere" for Germany, eiffel tower for paris, etc, etc), and have had other friends buy me ones for events in life (including buying me the bracelet and 3 charms to begin with).  I still don't understand the heeled sneakers.

Sorry, that was the baby talking. It gets these crazy cravings, you see.

Seriously! My sweet sweet DH is cooking supper as I type and all I want to do is think of an errand to run so I can go get a spicy chicken. Any ideas??....

  • My UO is that I still celebrate DH's and mine's dating anniversary and I'm not about to stop any time soon. We get one in Feb. and our wedding anniversary is in September and I hardly think an extra night of going out to dinner and celebrating the 3 extra years we were together, qualifies us as "cutesy" or "excessive"

If anything, I'm more determined to keep on celebrating these dates now that LO is on his way. We have 9 years of it just being DH and I and I'm not going to let traditions go because other people find it excessive.

    So....
    :P

DH and I both remember our dating anniversary way easier than our wedding anniversary. Seriously! Last year was our 6 year wedding anniversary and we both TOTALLY forgot it! We didn't even realize until 11pm that night... I looked down at my phone and was like why does Aug 3 seem like an important date??? I asked DH and we both just cracked up laughing! That's so bad! But I guess what 2 (soon to be 3) kids has done to us. Lol. Weird thing is we NEVER forget our dating anniversary, never have! We love to celebrate it!

I don't believe in homework, especially busy work.

I think kids should spend their evenings with positive family time, scouts, church, sports or other outside interests.  I think all kids should read nightly.

Kids learn more about themselves and others, increase their confidence and have more positivity about school when involved in their community.

When you think about your childhood, no one has awesome memories about spelling worksheets or doing lame subject and predicate underlining.

*high five* I'm anti homework too!

Seriously, I was looking at a pre-school for my 2.5 year old and they said they sent home one worksheet of homework every night. That was the end of the discussion for me. No way was I going to select them.

Agree...though I have read just a little on the reverse home work (and I think this is how it works)- older children read new over info they will be learning about the next day. I think that is far more effective. Then if they don't get it doesn't matter, teacher will TEACH it the next day and at least they'll have had an intro to the concepts and vocabulary, then get to practice under teacher supervision.

A flipped classroom is when, through video or reading, a student gets instructional information. Class time is spent applying that info by doing the worksheets/assignment/lab/project. Either way you kid will have homework.

It's unrealistic to expect that a teacher can teach 30 kids for 50 minutes and ensure that they all grasp the concept AND complete the assignment in time for the next state mandated exam. IF we had the liberty to teach a subject as long as it needed to be taught there might be less homework, but you fall short in yearly progress. Also remember that in a single class there will be students who are low-level, gifted, special ed, mentally unstable, ADD, diabetic, deathly allergic to something common, depressed, and not speaking English. Homework is part of school. It comes with the territory. I'm certainly not vouching that public ed is satisfactory all the time, but it is what it is. Teachers are planning, grading, entering the grades, contacting parents, offering tutoring, spending our paychecks on pencils because nobody seems to have one, and watching your kids basketball game on top of that same set of school hours.

Um... Also, I'm home sick with strep. Vent over.

In lower grades homework should really be about building responsibly. Take something home, do it, bring it back. It also helps parents who pay attention to see what we are doing at school. I do a homework contract each week. I send home math review, an new concept in math, spelling/sight words all on Mondays and as long as it's back by Friday I am happy. Parents like it and it isn't enough to keep the kids working all night every night on homework.

I don't understand why there is so much outcry over the weight loss of that Biggest Loser Contestant; Rachel Fredrckson.

Yes, she looks unhealthy. Yes she looks too skinny. But the show isn't called "Losing Weight to a Healthy Point and Stopping!" It's called "Biggest Loser". She was under
the care of professionals during the taping. I think it's hypocritical to judge her for her weight loss on a show designed specifically to judge people on their weight loss.

And skinny shaming is equally as unhealthy and rude as fat shaming.

THIS. I was just talking to DH about it about skinny shaming related to her win.

Oh I thought of another one...this is kind of a confession, but I think it's also going to be unpopular. If we have a boy I'm totally going to encourage him to play hockey or football because those are the sports I wouldn't mind sitting through 5 times a week or getting up at 6 on a Saturday to go to. He can start little...like 5? Then if he doesn't like it we won't push him to continue.

He's gonna take dance classes too while he's too young to think that boys don't do that. :-)

Ice Hockey is the biggest time suck out of all the childhood sports. It's also the most expensive, but oh my gawd the time traveling and games and practices...ugh.

I do agree with you about it being one of the best to watch though.
Oh yeah I know (sort of). My brother played for 13 years. And besides the money and travel, God do they STINK. I used to just walk past the laundry room of my parent's house and want to keel over from the stench. It was like something died in his skates and then was left out in the sun. But so much fun :-)

S/O has played hockey since grade school. He is GOOD at it. He still plays in small adult leagues.

If we have a girl, I hope she wants to play hockey, because he wants a hockey kid so bad.

As a former player and coach,
I can say girls can be just as much fun to watch as boys!

You guys are going to kill me now...it would make me SO NERVOUS to have a girl playing with boys. Maybe not when they're little, but as soon as the boys are bigger and stronger...no no no. I used to have mini heart attacks every time my brother took a hard hit. I could not handle my daughter getting slammed against the boards by a boy. Just no.

I played water polo in college (just as rough as hockey, but no helmets or pads), and we played with the guys team all the time...our summer leagues were always coed. We got bumped around for sure, but it made us tougher for our all girls games! It was fun, and we knew we were getting better the more we could hang with them!

My UO is that I have a love hate relationship with UO and FFFC threads. I've decided it's because my attention span is short and I don't like reading long paragraphs. TLDR.
That's why I try to stick with one liners. Also I'm paranoid of turning into my Mom who can tell a story foooooorrrrrrrreeeeevvvvvvveeeerrrr.

We were discussing this too...she went on the show for being too big, so she lost weight and is now too small...what's even considered normal anymore? Oh society.
