Nicknames for grandma?

edited February 2014 in 1st Trimester
Hi everyone! So my mother-in-law is very adamant that she will NOT be called grandma (LOL). What are some cute nicknames my little booger can call his/her "grandma"? What do your kids call their gma's? I've always called my grandparents grandma and grandpa so this is all very new to me! Thanks :)

Re: Nicknames for grandma?

  • My mother doesn't know I'm pregnant yet, but she told me years ago that she never wants to be called Grandma either.

I've already found her a very cute book of potential names and plan to give that to her when I tell her I'm pregnant. Search on Amazon... they have a LOT of options.

Personally, I always like Opa, Papa, Papi for Grandpa and Mima or Nana for Grandma. But I am going to let my mom pick it herself.

  • @elfinjenna I'll have to look into that! Her and I have been discussing a few and we really like Noni. But the names you picked out are super cute too!

  • @mrssitkowski2015 - Oh, I like Noni too. See... my list is ever evolving. Watch my mom pick something super weird. All I can hope for then is that the kid can't pronounce it and a new nickname is born!

@saraML13 - I don't get it either, but I'm picking my battles and this ain't gonna be one of them. My MIL has already expressed her preference for the traditional Grandma, so there is that.

  • My MIL went by Booger with BIL's kids.  I made my kids call her Grandma Nola.
  • We havent told our families yet (he wants to wait till 12 weeks), but I have to say Im so glad that Im not dealing with that.  My parents will be Gramma and Papa and his will be grandma and grandpa.

  • My parents have other grandchildren, my mom is "Mema" (sounds like Mee Maw) and my dad is Papa. H's parents have one grandchild and they are the traditional grandma and grandpa, so we will stick with that since its already set :)

  • Is there a cute nickname related to her name that the grandkids could use? For example, Dottie for Dorothy. I have also heard of Honey and Honey Child (HC) as alternate nicknames.

You could always start calling her Sophia from the Golden Girls so by the time the baby is here, Grandma won't seem bad.
  • I had a Mim and a Mimi (and a pop/poppy and a papaw). My mom is nana for my nieces.

My DH's northern family calls everyone 'grandma lastname' which always sounds so formal to me.

  • I never knew there were so many names for grandparents until I moved down south. I've always used Grandma Lastname. As did everyone in my family and that's what my kids call their grandparents as well. Anything else is just strange to me but I guess that's just how I was brought up.

My MIL is insisting that she be Gigi and my mom wants to be Mimi.  One of my grandmas is Mumsie and the other was Grandma (last name).

I jokingly told my mom she could be Gigi. Apparently it stuck because once we announce she put she she was going to be a Gigi. MIL wants to be memmaw? I can say it not sure how you would even spell it.

My in-laws already picked out their "grandparent nicknames", and we haven't even told them about the pregnancy yet! My husband's father will be "Pa-pa" (sounds like "Paw-paw"), and his mother will be "Nana". I'm hoping that my parents will actually be called "Grandma and Grandpa" (At least my dad be called "Grandpa"), but with my mother being such a young mom (She's only in her 40's), I don't know if that will really happen... I just hope she doesn't pick something stupid and "hip" sounding...

  • My mother and mother-in-law both spent my entire first pregnancy trying to come up with nicknames for themselves...When DD1 was barely speaking, grandparents were "mee-maw" and "pee-paw."

Now they are all Grandma and Grandpa and they (the grandparents) love every minute of it.
  • Meh, waste all the time you want picking a name.  Your kid may not choose to use it :)  My ILs were supposed to be Grammy and Grampy.  They are Bammy and Bampy - my son's choosing.  A cousin changed it to Mammy and Bampy.  I guarantee that if your kid wants to call her Grandma, by the time he's old enough to decide that, she'll be pleased as punch to accept any name her darling grandbaby chooses for her lol

My parents refer to themselves as Grammies and Grampie but DD has never called my dad Grampie. She calls him Sikka and we have no idea how she got that from Grampie.
My DF and his brother created cute little names like that for their grandparents when they were little so I'm hoping my baby does! I think its the cutest.

I suggested Babci to my MIL because my fiances side of the family is polish (but shes married in, shes irish) and she didn't like it! Lol I think it's cute.

  • I have one Grandma/Grandpa and one Nana/Papa.  My husband said Grandpa for both, but Granny and Grandma.  LO has three sets of grandparents (dh's parents are divorced) and has different names for all three sets.  Busha and Jaja (supposedly Polish, I have no idea), Granpapa and Grandma, and Meema and Papa.

  • When my husband and I announced that we're pregnant we asked our parents to decide what they wanted to be called. They really liked the idea and it made them feel involved. Maybe you could ask her to decide.

  • Not sure what our family will pick, but I had a Grammie and a Grampie, and a Memere and Pepere (French)
  • My friend's mom insisted that she would be Grammy. Apparently that is somehow better than grandma.

    My mom too!

  • My dad goes by Papa and my mum goes by grandma or grams. I would prefer my son not to address my inlaws as grandma and grandpa (long story) but he does and for the record I wouldn't tell him not too. I for one do not believe they deserve the title.

My mom's name is Jody and she wants to go by Jo Jo. A friend's son called her that when he was little and she's loved it ever since. My mother in law is German so Oma is a no brainer.
  • My son calls my mom Mimi.

  • We have a Nana and a Papa. DH's mom is Lele (an adaptation of abuela) and DH's dad is ...grumpy. Yup, he agreed to it.

We also have a Pop pop (DS's great grandfather) and my best friends mom is Sweet pea.

  • My dad and step-mom are Papa and Nana (they wanted to be called that). My MIL is grandma and my FIL is grandpa. My grandparents are called Granny and Granddad by everyone in the family.

  • It's hard because my husband and I both come from divorced families, so there's 4 sets of grandparents for our first ones!

His mother - Grandma / His Step Mother - Mimi / My mother - Gammy / Step Mother - Ghaumy (she says it's German.. but I dunno...)

I hope I can keep it all straight, hehe.

  • My mom wants to be called "mimi" because it's kind of how you would say mom or grandma in french (I have no idea to be honest) in French. We are what you consider cajun french. My mil-have no clue. She has said a few but hasn't stuck with one.

    It's a BOY

  • My boys have Nona and ZuZu (short for Susan). I liked Gigi and Mimi as well. If I become a grandmother ever, I want to be Lolly.

  • my parents are going to be Omie and Opa
  • My friend's mom insisted that she would be Grammy. Apparently that is somehow better than grandma.

My mom picked "Grammy" and my kid calls her "Gaman"

  • we haven't had that talk yet (still in secret mode--which is soooo hard) but my friend's mom picked Gigi and that worked for a bit then the kids morphed it into Grandma Gigi

also heard:  Nonna,  Noni, Nanna, Oma, Grammy
