Head Banging

Does anyone else's LO bang their head on things - on purpose? DS will bang his head repeatedly on the floor (and it is not soft!) - usually when he is upset or we tell him no. He also does it in his crib when he can't fall asleep but that doesn't bother me as much because I use to do that when I was his age plus it is soft.  But when he does it on the floor when he is upset - I am always afraid he is going to hurt himself - he even will bang it on other things like walls or doors or furniture if he isn't on the floor. Anyone else's lo do this? Should I be concerned?

It was really bad today - I'm sure he gives himself a headache doing it! I try moving pillows under him but he immediately moves off them to find a harder surface. Crazy!

  • In case anyone else is dealing with this - I found this article: https://www.mamashealth.com/child/headbang.asp I'm sure there is more!

  • Haven't clicked on the article yet, but yes DS is definitely a head-banger.  He does it when he's pissed (he'll bang his head on the ceramic tile floor, against the wood cabinets, against the wall), he does it when his teeth are bothering him, and sometimes he will literally out of the blue just randomly do it (but when that's the case it's just once...when he's mad or in pain he'll hit his head several times before stopping).  His pediatrician told us to ignore him.  If he gets attention from us, then he learns that banging his head = attention from mom and dad.  Our pedi actually said his daughter used to do that and it got to the point where she'd bring her head like an inch off the ground and stop to look around and see if anyone was watching!  It's hard to ignore because I worry he'll hurt himself too, but we do our best.  Good luck.

  • My son was a major headbanger from about 12-16 months but is slowly growing out of it and barely does it anymore.  We began ignoring and walking away from him when he did it.  He eventually did what PP said and "braced himself" before hitting his head very lightly on the floor then eventually stopped pretty much all together.  I did noticed that it was always worst when he wasn't feeling well especially after shots or teething so may be something to pay attention to.
