S/O Percentiles-Small Kids

Zachary has been in the 4% for weigh for his last 3-4 visits and 20% for height, which just dropped to 10%.  Has anyone's doctors expressed any concern about this?  I couldn't take off work for the 18 month appt so DH went and he forgot to ask (he forgot all of the questions I wanted him to ask).  Zachary seems to be eating and drinking fine, so I don't think there is anything we can do on our end.  Just wondering if there is anything we should be worried about.  DH and I are both average sized adults and were both pretty average as babies (he was probably at the top percentiles for weight though).

Re: S/O Percentiles-Small Kids

  • Avery has her appt tomorrow and she is also small. Last time the pedi suggested upping her calorie and fat intake. Simple things like more peanut butter and cheese or putting butter on her veggies. He said he wasn't overly concerned because she is growing. He said we could try pediasure if we wanted, but Avery was not a fan. Hopefully she is a little higher in the weight percentile this time, but she had the flu for nearly a week so I'm doubtful we'll show much gain.

  • Nope. LO has always been small (8-10%). My pedi said as long as she is gaining, even though she is gaining slowly, then she is fine. A small drop like from 10% to 8% is not a concern and is probably just due to increased activity etc. It is  an  issue if a baby suddenly goes from the 50% to the 10% and that is when my pedi is concerned.
I will say that my pedi does mention always pushing milk and calories at LO to make sure she is getting enough. She constantly goes over her meals and how much/when LO eats to make sure she is getting enough.
  • The doctor has retaken after the nurse's initial measurement, Zaynes height measurement his last two appointments. (15 &18 months) His height on the chart was tapering off and he even measured shorter at 18 months than 15 mo. I don't think he shrunk, but it's likely just how he was standing. Anyway, his pedi isn't concerned, and said we will just see where he is at for his next appointment. Otherwise LO weight was in the 40th percentile so no concern there. My H is a smaller guy at 5'7' and was always the shortest guy in school growing up. So I always imagined Zayne could be on the smaller side height wise, so I really am not concerned at this point.

  • We had our appointment this morning and DS is close to 10% for both height and weight. The pedi said since his curve has been steady since 8 months she had no concern. She said she just looks for them to stay on the same curve and not jump around or make big drops numerous times.

  • Thanks for the responses.  The doctor has said in the past that since he is staying at those percentages it means he is growing at a constant rate and that is a good thing.

  • We have a peanut here! Pedi said so long as she is growing and thriving, we are fine. Both my H and I are small, so it makes sense. You have to remember the norm/average in the U.S. is actually quite large in comparison to other countries.
