I don't like the term "seester" instead of sister on social media or wherever. It weirds me out.

  • I will not be watching these Olympics and it saddens me that Russia was chosen over so many other worthy candidates. Between the gay propoganda law, the mass execution of strays and the capture and confinement of wild orcas (which btw no one seems to know where they disappeared to). It just makes me sad.

  • I think you can judge a person by the amount of snow left on their car. You get a pass if it's a van or SUV where its a reasonable assumption that you couldn't reach. But man in a hatchback on the highway with a mattress of snow on your roof? Yeah, I'm looking at you, buddy.

    even christmas?

  • Holiday-themed photo sessions are stupid.

Yup. Family photos when you're dressed up anyway? Sure.

Scheduling a photo session staged to look like Christmas? Stupid.

Even worse are the people who do Valentine's, St Patty's, Easter, etc.

My friend wants to take v day pics of G tomorrow. It's free. She wants practice.. I won't say no. She also did easter last year because it was G's 6 mo photo session.

I would never pay someone to do a holiday session.

I think staged Christmas pictures are weird. Here's a fake tree and a fireplace on a white backdrop....sit on this sled not in snow.

  • People are overreacting about the dog culling in Russia.
When I was in Thailand, they needed to do something with all the stray dogs.  That amount of mange and starvation was crazy.  I understand in that country it is a religious thing.  But, maybe in Russia those dogs are sick and underfed as well.

I agree. Mostly because I won't put up a Christmas/Easter/Valentine, etc. picture to display year-round. T's Santa pictures get put up with the Christmas decorations.

  • I think there's a humane way to euthanize an animal and then there's what sochi did. There's video of dogs who have been poisoned howling in pain and dying in the street. So no these aren't my neighbors dogs, but I don't think any animal deserves that kind of treatment.
This.  And it's just one of the many things that Russia should be ashamed of surrounding this year's Olympics.  Where the fuck did that $51 billion go?  Seriously, there was plenty of advance-notice, get your shit together.

  • The Olympics have been too corporatized.   I don't think they should take place in third-world countries. It's a disservice to the local residents and all of the competitors.
I agree, but I also think it was a huge opportunity for Sochi. I mean, $51 billion, and then additional revenue from the tourism brought by the event itself?  They squandered it.

  • Why would you reference PETA? Nobody takes them seriously.
Lilypie First Birthday tickers imageVisit The Nest!Visit The Nest!
  • If that's true re: the dogs, I don't like that. But with those populations, there is not a good solution. I guess they would need 100,000 humane traps, food bait, a huge supply of euthanasia chemicals, and a huge educated and properly outfitted staff that could haul the cages in, and others to euthanize the pets. All of that without a single person getting bit or scratched? I dunno....

  • Also, getting captured and freaking out in a cage all night then transported in a vehicle and taken to a strange place. For any pet, but especially a feral- it is not humane. I will argue that it is more traumatic.

Again. It's RUSSIA. Of course they fucked it up.

That being said. Awesome. Huge influx of tourism for, what, a month at most? And then you have all the unused abandoned buildings.  Let's keep doing that to a new country every 4 years.  At least in developed countries they can use existing large-scale sports arenas and/or repurpose the buildings and hotels after the games are over.

    Like Atlanta.
My ILs attended the Atlanta games...and witnessed a guy being murdered while waiting for the train.

  • I wish Chicago would've gotten the 2016 bid.

I am selfishly thankful that Chicago didn't get it. It would've been a clusterfuck of epic proportions, infrastructure-wise. Plus, IL is notorious for mismanaging money, and I could easily see it landing us even more in the red than we are now.

  • This isn't really a UO but I'm putting it here anyway. We got over a foot of snow yesterday and I really want to bring the boys outside to play in it but it's only like 10 degrees. If I dress them really warm and only bring them out for a few minutes does that make me a bad mom?

  • Well yeah... I get that. If it's  a lot of snow I'd clean it off. But I never COMPLETELY clean it off like I do my windows. I guess I shouldn't say I'm the person with a mattress of snow on my roof. If it's like an inch, though.. I don't mess with it.

    I guess I should now!

I think this is just one more way that Russia dropped the ball. It's not like they knew for years that there were feral dogs near the Olympic sites. They waited and then had to scramble to take care of the issue last minute.
Feral dogs (and any other animal that's feral) are very hard to just get rid of...they come back fast, so I can see how it would take a big push right before the Olympics to get rid of them. They'll be back in droves once the games are over, I'm sure.

  • My favorite thing about Sochi is that it's a resort town and one of the mildest places in Russia, so the conditions aren't actually even ideal for these Olympics.

My UO is that if you're going to constantly complain that you're "so busy" at work and you're extremely difficult to get ahold of, you better not spend almost an hour and a half every fucking morning walking around and chatting with people.  My boss is here today.  I haven't been able to get her on the phone in close to a week.  She has been giggling with everyone in student services since 740 when she walked in.

In MN, all daycares are required to give kids 2+ at least a half hour outside whenever the windchill is above 0. :)

They'll be fine.  Just bring them in if their clothes get too wet or if they seem too cold.  Honestly, it'll probably take longer to bundle them up.

Wow, it's 20 degrees (incl windchill) at our daycare for 2/3 yr olds, 15 degrees for 4/5 yr olds and 30 for the 1 year olds.  I don't think I'd want my 2 year old outside for 30 minutes in 0 degrees.  I don't know what my breaking point would be, but 0 seems low to me for keeping them outside for 30 minutes.

Holly - I'd totally take them outside - I love snow!  Just bundle them up and bring them in if it gets too cold.  I'd personally probably only last about 15 minutes.  :)

If that makes you a bad mom then add me to the list. DD plays outside every time the dogs go outside and my outdoor thermometer reads 0 or higher. So usually 3 times a day even if we only go out for 5 min she loves it and it usually guarantees a good mood for the following hour. As a plus she can now put her own snow pants on and usually one boot.

If you are JUST starting a career, it's not smart to assume the pension you signed on for will be there in the end. You need to make alternate plans for retirement. Disclaimer: this applies to NEW folks who can clearly see where pensions are going, not workers with 30+ yrs who didn't know better.
I work for the state.  With as much as they pull out for my pension, I have no money left over to invest in anything else.  Awesome for you that you can, but not everyone is in that position.  I would hope that by the time they dissolve the pension plan that there's an opportunity to get your money out and put it somewhere else.  But yea, I don't have anything else after the 11.6% that goes in there now.  I do have money from my old 401K in an IRA, but that's just under a year's salary.

The actual amount of  outside time depens on the temprature, there is a chart that most places have to follow. At 0 it is 15 min at a time, but most places go outside twice a day.
