Bedrest Already!?!

So today we had a little bit of a scare. I woke up at 4am with waves of cramps and back aches. It reminded me all too well of the preterm labor with my son so I panicked. I called the dr first thing this morning and was able to get in. I won't bore you with all the details, but the short version is that my cervix is still closed but too thin. I have been put on modified bedrest and told not to lift more than 5lb (aka my 20 month old DS). This should be interesting….

But on the bright side, my heart rate was so high (145bmp so they couldn't distinguish my hr from baby's) that I got an extra ultrasound. Baby GIRL, Madelyn, willingly showed her goods today and we were able to get a very clear shot!

Anyways, all thoughts, prayers, suggestions, etc would be appreciated for this time of bedrest. The doctor seemed to think that I would be cleared a few weeks after my McKena shots come in. Just hoping that is soon!

Somewhat. My mother was supposed to be my back-up for when I went on bedrest (we were expecting it to happen closer to 7/8months from previous experience), but she just had surgery last week and can't pick DS up either. I will just have to change and feed on the floor while DH works. I think it's doable, it will just be difficult since I can't pick up and go somewhere if I need to.

  • How many weeks are you? I started my 17p today (generic Makenna). Here's hoping you can start yours soon and get off bedrest! Sending happy thoughts to you.

They have been working on my shots situation since my first appointment because they knew I would need them. However, insurance is giving them a hard time, dragging their feet and giving them the run around. Not really sure what's going on, but the doctor was filing some medical emergency form today to try to get them on the ball after today's visit. They spoke with them while I was still in the office and the shots are supposed to be in by Monday. The office is going to call me as soon as they come in so I can start them immediately. The doctor was even looking for a spare, but no luck.

@lilredmommac - are they really painful? I mean, at this point I don't care; but I would like to be prepared. ;)

  • I was pleasantly surprised that the injection itself wasn't painful. It took a sec for the nurse to administer tho because it's soooo thick. I've had a little stinging since then but (fingers crossed) I'm not complaining! Hope insurance works out quickly. I'm 17 weeks and just started, but in your situation would have wanted them to start yesterday. Keep us updated!
  • Ick! Hope you find some good books to read :) happy baking to the girlie!
  • Congrats on your girl!!! Sorry about the bed rest though.

Glad to hear this! Hope they work well for you too. My doctor said that she has never had anyone to go into labor while on the shots, so that makes me very optimistic. Are you the one that posted a little while back about your DH not being on board with the shots? If so, I am so glad he finally came around! If not, just ignore. ;)

  • So sorry to hear that you are on bedrest already!  Here's hoping that your shots come in asap and they do the trick!  Prayers for you that your baby girl (congrats on that by the way) cooks for at least another 22 weeks!

Honestly, I think every doctor defines it slightly different. It's not a strict bedrest where you are confined to a bed other than going to the restroom, it's more laid back. My doctor defined it as "taking it easy" and resting as much as possible. I'm still allowed to go places and do things, just with restrictions and time limitations. Different scenarios yield different restrictions. Hope that makes sense and helps you understand a little better!

My doctor put me on modified bed rest last time and said I could only go to work, sit at my desk for half the day, then come home and sit on the couch or in bed.  I wasn't allowed to go anywhere else, cook, clean, do laundry, etc.  So I think it really does depend on the doctor and maybe the reason for the bed rest.
