Meeting with the RE

Today was my SO first  RE apt. They went through her history agreed to use the same donor that we have been using and have the donors already purchased. They did the ultrasound as well and right away stated based on what he sees he feels like she has PCOS. He went over PCOS has 3 effects one would be increased male hormones(which to him includes acne which is why she has been on birth control), the way her ovaries look, and irregular periods. Which she has always had normal cycles even off birth control. Our plan is for her to do the routine blood work make sure all levels are good and do a trail run on her cycle. CD10 she will start OPK testing, followed with blood work a couple of days later to confirm ovulation. If she doesn’t get a positive OPK we will call him and he will run blood work earlier. He stated that this trial run will be able to tell us if we will be starting with clomid. I am happy to have the trial cycle and not waste a vial. My SO is being too hard on herself about this but I keep telling her we will be okay. She has to wean of a medication as well so this trial cycle allows us to do that as well.I am still very hopeful this will work and am happy we know everything now before we start trying. Pending all goes well her first IUI is set for March.

One other thiing came up is that her uterus seems a little tilted. RE stated that it would just make the IUI a little harder becuase they will have to turn the cath. But he also stated having a simi full bladder will also help. But sees no issues with it preventing her from getting pregnant. Anyone else have experience with a tilted uterus? Do you know if it would impact delivery when she does become pregnant?

Thanks :)

Re: Meeting with the RE

  • I had a tilted uterus which is why it was suggested that we go straight to in-office IUI rather than attempting ICI at home.  Needless to say, (eventually) the IUI did the trick.  Once you are pregnant, everything moves around in there and the tilt is no longer an issue.

Sorry to hear about the potential PCOS.  Good luck to you two!

  • I have not been told I have a tilted uterus, but I do have a tilted cervix. My own research tells me that a tilted cervix is often indicative of a tipped uterus, but I don't know if mine is actually tipped, nothing along those lines ever came up.

I can tell you that my IUIs were all uncomfortable (and a few painful), as was my HSG test, and that is due to the need to manipulate the catheter a lot in order to get it into the correct position because of the tilt. I have no reason to believe that my IUIs were not successful due to this issue (my RE assures me this is not the case), and I have also been told that my tilted cervix will have no impact on pregnancy (so far so good in that department) and no impact on labor and delivery.

I would recommend that your partner take tylenol before IUIs and just be prepared for some added discomfort. I hope you find sucess in this process very soon. Congrats on having a plan and good luck! :)

  • I have a tilted uterus. It made the IUIs a bit harder as he had to find a way to thread it through the apparent 90* angle I have. It took us 4 tries but we are pregnant. As long as the RE knows ahead of time it should not impact anything...just know that there may have to be some time spent on the actual threading process and it is not the most comfortable sensation.

I was told that this would not impact childbirth at all! Good luck!

  • I have a backwards uterus but my cervix is still well-positioned and accessible, so my transfers were a breeze for the most part. It kind of depends on how much its tilted or even kinda bent over.

So glad you're on your way!!
