how long..

..do your babies stay calm when you set them in a stationary place (i.e. on your lap, laying on the floor, in RnP, baby bouncer/lounge chair, etc)? Mine is 6 weeks and will start crying after only a couple minutes (if that) of not patting his back to be burped, walked around, bounced, rocked,or fed. I don't mind giving him all the attention but I'm not sure its normal that if he's not being stimulated in some way he's automatically crying/fussing. I'm curious if there should be longer periods of more content independant time. It has been this way all along so I don't relate this to a growth spurt but maybe something else? He also strains so much he gave himself a small umbilical hernia. Not sure that has anything to do with anything just thought I'd add that. TIA

Re: how long..

  • Dd sits in her swing content for 30-40 minutes. She has fallen asleep and been in it for over an hour. She will sit in her carrier (rocker) for like 20 minutes. She likes to be bounced and stand on her feet when she is wide awake sometimes and will fuss if I don't hold her up and bounce her. It sounds like you may have some underlying issues though.

  • My guy has one awake period in the morning when I could plop him in his bouncer or play mat and leave him be for 30 min. Pretty much the rest of the day he is eating or napping; so if he is awake, he is usually crying to eat or crying from being overtired.

I wonder if your LO is overstimulated?

  • My LO is the same way. The morning is the only time I can set him somewhere for maybe 20-30 min without him crying. The rest of the day if he's not sleeping or eating he has to be held and moved around.

  • LO is 5w and is the same way.  If she is awake, she is not content in one place for more than a few minutes without fussing. It's very tiring, especially as she is awake longer as she gets older. Luckily she sleeps well at night but it really wears on me during the day.

  • She has to be entertained or she cries when awake, maybe I can get ten minutes under her gym, MAYBE. She's either sleeping, crying, or trying to sleep but over tired. She like to coo and smile when you talk to her or sing, but even that goes down hill fast.

Thanks for the responses, I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this. It is SO tiring! Hope it gets easier for everyone soon!

Eta - the love tits are for you guys responding not your similar situations :)

  • Levi was like that, but now at 10 weeks, he stays in his crib entertaining himself or on his activity gym for almost 45 minutes at a time.
  • My LO was like that, but for about the past two weeks it has been better. She's 10 weeks now and will lay on her play mat and entertain herself while I shower. She would only sleep in my arms but now she will sleep in her swing during the day! There is hope that it'll get better!
  • I second baby wearing like @mightmousy. When I wear her, I can cook, clean, play with the dog, do my makeup, etc. My LO is 7 weeks today and in about the past two weeks has become obsessed with her monkey bouncer. She'll sit in that up to 45 mins on her own. Other than that, she wants to be in our arms or us right with her.

  • DD1, 3 years old next month, is still that way ;-) This LO is usually pretty good with chillin on her own, if you catch her in the right mood. She usually hangs out in her bouncy chair, on her mat, or just on the floor for a good 20-30 minutes, a few times a day. The other day she happily chilled in her chair for an hour.

  • Every time it's different. It could be 5 min to 20 min till she fusses. My LO strains so much she has an umbilical hernia too.
  • It depends on the time of day.  If it's first thing in the morning or around 4, after his long nap, he can stay happy on the floor for 30 minutes.  If he is tired he will only last 5-10.  However, if he is tired he doesn't want to be held most of the time either.  He prefers to nap on the floor or in his crib.

  • Sometimes he will be content in his bouncer, or propped in boppy right in front of me. He really lkes Curious George, so I'll prop that doll in the boppy in M's sight if I need to leave the room. He will "talk" to George for a few minutes. Then he remembers he must be held by mom at all times to prevent Armegeddon, and the shrieking begins.
