Preemies

MFM question

I called my ob the other day to ask about baby aspirin and see if there is anything I can do pre-conception to decrease my risk of pre-e... I knew the answer was nothing more than make sure I'm as healthy as possible at this point.  What I didn't expect was the nurse telling me that she talked to a doctor and that they don't recommend baby aspirin or anything because the cause of pre-e is unknown so there is no reason to take something that is not guaranteed to help.  I love my ob office and want to stick with them but now I'm thinking I want to see a MFM in addition.  I don't know if the nurse was just speaking on her own or if she really did talk to someone. there are a lot of doctors at the office so I will never know who it would have been. Even if the MFM just says the same thing I think I will feel better.  the MFM that saw me when I was in the hospital is in network and is the chief of the MFM department at our hospital.  He's well respected and is taking new patients.

Am I crazy for wanting to see him? Am I going overboard? Also, will seeing him piss off my ob or could it be offensive to them? I was thinking I could just say I thought I was supposed to after the last pregnancy and I had no idea if anyone gets offended.

Thoughts?

Re: MFM question

  • I already confirmed with insurance that I don't need a referral with my plan (PPO).  I just worry that they think I am second guessing them but I'm not.  No one there is an MFM specialist.

  • Doctors should never be offended for a patient seeking a specialist's opinion. If your OB gets upset then I would suggest looking for a new OB because that would be highly inappropriate and unprofessional. I definitely think you should see one if you want to. I saw an MFM in addition to my OB with my pregnancy with the boys because twins are automatically considered high risk. They worked together since the OB is generally the doctor for the mom and the MFM is more for the baby.

  • If I hadn't gotten this surprise pregnancy, I would have seen a MFM before getting pregnant again just to hear from someone who specializes in high risk pregnancies. I think it's a great idea for you!

  • Go for it!!!!!! I say the more info/input/knowledge, the better.

And I agree, if your OB gets upset, there are plenty more out there.

  • I agree with Missa_g completely! I would definitely consult with an MFM. In my opinion, you can never take too many precautions in having a healthy and FT pregnancy especially after the experience of having a preemie. My MFM was in the same hospital as my OB so they worked together to make sure everything was ok. I hope your appt goes well!

  • I just responded on the other thread before I saw this post. I'm glad you were able to make an appointment! :) I don't think what you did was overboard at all if you anticipate a higher risk pregnancy due to your history. The MFMs are more versed in high risk situations so they will probably have more information with regards to current research like PP mentioned. Like I've said before, my MFM not only suggested the baby aspirin use but gave actual percentages with regards to how it helps. Good luck!
