What to eat when you have ZERO appetite

Hey ladies, having been sick since Friday, just wondering what you all do for protein supplementation if you have zero appetite. I know I'm hungry, but when I make food and try to eat it, it makes me gag. I can't stomach anything at this point, and I wouldn't be concerned if I weren't KU. So, just wondering, what do you all do when food can't pass your lips?

  • Can you stomach smoothies? If I don't have an appetitite, I usually make a berry smoothie with about a cup of greek yogurt and a little milk to thin it out.

  • Appetite hasn't been a problem for me so far - yikes! - but Ensure, particularly the chocolate flavor, is a pretty decent meal replacement if you're having a hard time wanting anything. It's not too heavy on the stomach if you're feeling a little queasy. I wouldn't take it on an ongoing basis, but its good for a temporary fix!

But in general when I'm desperate for protein my protein fix its scrambled eggs, cottage cheese and greek yogurt.

  • I pretty much lived off chicken broth my first trimester. My midwife wasn't too concerned about it. If you are sick, a few days of no protein isn't the worst thing.

  • Smoothies or milk shakes with egg white protein powder.  It's what I lived on both pregnancies for the first month or so of morning sickness.  Feel better!

  • Have you tried peanut butter toast? When I was feeling nauseous and couldn't eat this really helped.
  • Toast and yogurt.

  • You may want to try Premier Protein shakes. The chocolate one is quite good; I drink one daily for breakfast 1.

  • Thanks for the ideas ladies. I screwed up my first tri diet pretty bad, lived off mainly Mac and cheese or pop arts. I just haven't been able to chew much of anything. I'll be trying the smoothies and peanut butter toast tonight. Thanks!

Just go straight up ice cream and add some nuts! Work in the healthy stuff when you are feeling better! I'm no dr, but who can pass up ice cream!?!

I may just justify this :)

  • If it's any consolation, my nutritionist instructed me to make smoothies with ice cream to get my weight up.

For nausea they suggest the brat diet.
Bananas. Rice. Apples. Toast. But if you can drink milk its a good source of vitamins. Also try making smoothies. Greek yogurt, some fruit and I use a little milk in mine. Good source of vitamins and protein and its easy on the stomach. Hope you get to feeling better!

    Eta: spelling.
  • Oh, and Pediasure and vanilla ice cream make for an amazing milkshake and protein and what not from the Pediasure! And did I mention its delicious? Lol
  • Oreos. Really. Last pregnancy I kept loosing weight and Oreos and milk were the only things I ever wanted. DH would give me s**t but I would just answer that my Ob had told me to gain 2lbs by my next appt and I was 1lb down, so I had 3 lbs of Oreos due to me. I ended the 9 months 1/2 lb down from my pre-pregnancy weight, with a healthy baby.

Haven't had any yet this time, but I'm 1 lb up so far (yeah me).

  • I eat what I love the most even if it's a little bad for me just so I eat. Toast, cereal, Belvita bars, chicken noodle soup, pancakes. Mostly light stuff, anything with vitamin C and carbs work for me. Ohhhh oatmeal is a good one too.

As for protein, egg whites or eggs, yogurt, your favorite form of meat just not fried or beans of any kind. Beans also have a lot of fiber in them which is good if you're constipated.

Good luck! Let us know if something works for you.
  • I wouldn't worry too much about the baby, from everything I have been told, baby will take what it needs from you, and you will suffer later from a lack of anything that you weren't replenishing.  Baby will be fine :)

  • Milk is something I can always manage if my appetite is not up to par.  Real milk, not skim!
