Help! Sleep Issues and other questions for those w/a 2.5 y/o...

My DD is just about 2.5 and I thought for sure by now she'd be a better sleeper but not yet!  She's been in her big girl bed since about July (she jumped out of the crib) and since she moved to the bed it's never been easy to put her to sleep.  She now has gotten used to me laying either on the floor next to her bed or in bed with her.  If I try to leave before she's asleep she gets up out of bed screaming/crying.  I'll close and lock the door and she literally bangs on the door where I think she's going to break it down!   We live in attached condos so I don't like to let her cry/scream for more than 10 minutes because of our close proximaty to neighboors.  Any advise to break this horrible habit (that I created)?   It takes some nights up to an hour for her to fall asleep!!

And a few other random questions...

1. What time does your LO got to bed typically and wake?   We usually start the sleep process in her room around 7:30 but most nights she's not actually asleep until 8 or 8:30.   And she wakes anywhere between 5am and 7am.

2. Does LO still nap?  DD still naps 3 hours at daycare from 12-3!  I think this may be why she takes so long to fall asleep.  On the weekends she naps about 2 hours.

3.  Is your LO potty trained?  If not have you started the process or when do you plan starting?

4.  If your LO uses a paci when do you plan on stopping?  My DD still uses the paci for naps & night time and sometimes during the day if she's cranky.

Thank you all for your input and advice!

  • Not sure on advice for the sleep situation.  When we realize we have created a situation we usually approach it from a cold turkey standpoint.  I think my 5 yr old used to stand in his crib when he was around 1.5 or 2 and yell for sometimes up to an hour.  We would just go through the bedtime routine and kiss him and put him down the same way every night.  Then he'd yell and we'd just ignore him.  It might have gone on for a month.  But eventually he got the picture.  We actually lived in a condo at that time with neighbors above and below.  Now that I think about it, we were probably the neighbors from hell.

    1. Bedtime at 7:30, process starts around 6:45 if he needs a bath.  PJ's on, teeth brushed and in chair for stories at 7:15.  Up around 6 a.m.

    2. Naps 12:30-2:30 or 3:00

    3. Potty training has started at daycare, I haven't really started it here at home.  I hate potty training.  I'll probably avoid it for a little while longer.

    4.  No paci.

  • Just curious, why do you shut the door. That sounds kinda scary for a kiddo to be shut in a dark room. We leave the door open and just kept putting her back in bed when we did sleep training.
    1. Bedtime at 8:30, asleep around 9, up at anywhere from 5:30-7
    2. Nap time around 1:30-2 lasts around 2-3 hrs depending how hard she's been playing
    3. She's potty trained for the most part but will still have an accident about every other day. We started about two weeks ago with the three day potty training method. We weren't into the naked thing do after two days we gave her panties and it worked our well.
    4. We took the paci away the day after her second bday. It wasn't as bad as you'd think considering she loved the thing!

We are dealing with the exact same monster! How does she do if you're not home? My son will go to sleep no problem for everyone else.  We're tackling a few other issues right now, so we're just dealing with the sleep stuff. But it sucks :(

And a few other random questions...

    1. What time does your LO got to bed typically and wake?   We usually start the sleep process in her room around 7:30 but most nights she's not actually asleep until 8 or 8:30.   And she wakes anywhere between 5am and 7am.  Goes to be at 8, falls asleep usually by 8:30, wakes at midnight, wakes at 3, comes to our bed at 5 and sleeps until 6-6:45. Sleep SUCKS in our house.

    2. Does LO still nap?  DD still naps 3 hours at daycare from 12-3!  I think this may be why she takes so long to fall asleep.  On the weekends she naps about 2 hours. That's a loooong nap for a 2.5yo. Will they wake her if you ask?

    3.  Is your LO potty trained?  If not have you started the process or when do you plan starting? Haven't started anything serious, just pees before bath.  Again, we're tackling some other issues before we get into the PTing. I hope he's trained by 3.

    4.  If your LO uses a paci when do you plan on stopping?  My DD still uses the paci for naps & night time and sometimes during the day if she's cranky. He quit on his own at 6mos when he started teething.  Sorry, that doesn't help you.

Thank you all for your input and advice!

  • As far as sleep, DH is in charge of bedtime and my son is still in a crib, but DH stays in there with him until he falls asleep.  It makes things much quicker and easier.  He's not going to need/want it forever and it doesn't bother DH or I.

    1. What time does your LO got to bed typically and wake?   We start the bedtime routine at 6:45.  That's bathtime.  After bath comes pajamas, story time, and then bed.  He's usually asleep sometime between 7:30 and 8.  Occasionally we'll have nights it takes longer, but consistently he's out by 8.

    2. Does LO still nap? He does, but we have to really work for length.  At preschool, the naptime is too late - usually around 1:30, and he'll sleep about 70 minutes.  He needs more.  At home on the weekends we put him down earlier and he sleeps about 90 minutes.  We'd like him to do 2 hours, but aren't usually successful.

    3.  Is your LO potty trained?  If not have you started the process or when do you plan starting? Nope.  And I'm in no hurry to potty train.  The more ready he is, the easier it's going to be for me, so I'm waiting until he wants to potty train.  Right now we have a toilet ring on the toilet and he likes to go in it every night before bath.  He'll ask to sit on it some other times, and I expect eventually he'll want to sit on it all the time.

    4.  If your LO uses a paci when do you plan on stopping?  We quit a little after he turned 2.  Before he started preschool.  He was in daycare at the time and they really helped with the transition.  It took about 3 days.

    1. What time does your LO got to bed typically and wake?   My son is a night owl. He goes to bed around 9:00 and wakes up 7:00-7:30. I don't get home with him from work and daycare until close to 6:00. These really early bedtimes I see wouldn't work for us.

    2. Does LO still nap?  Yes, he naps about 2 hours at daycare and sometimes longer on weekends.

    3.  Is your LO potty trained?  If not have you started the process or when do you plan starting? We've started and they are working on it at daycare too.

    4.  If your LO uses a paci when do you plan on stopping?  No paci.

  • 1. DD1 had more issues with staying in bed than DD2 has had. DD2 will often get out of bed once and say she needs to go potty, and after that she'll go to bed without issue. DD1 used to get out of bed and stand at the top of the stairs (behind a gate) 5 or 6 times a night. We always just put her back in bed said good night. No other talking. The getting out of bed sometimes stretched out for an hour or so, but usually not much past that. When she was closer to 3, we started doing sticker charts for staying in bed at bedtime and that finally solved the problem. Personally, I would not lock the door, but I don't have a problem with closing the door. I just want the girls to be able to get out if they need to during the night.

    2. DD2 goes to bed between 7:30 and 8:00 and sleeps until about 6:00 on average.

    3. She still naps for 2-3 hours in the afternoon. She needs it. If for some reason she misses a nap, she is a complete mess.

    4. DD2 potty trained at 22 months. I think having a big sister helped in that department. She still wears a pull-up at night, but is dry in the morning more often than not.

    5. We dropped the paci cold turkey right around her 2nd birthday. She had only been using it at night anyway. One night she really wanted to sleep in DD1s bed with her, so we told her she could, but that she couldn't have the paci in there. She said okay and that was it. We never gave it to her again.

  • Have you considered a gate at her door instead of shutting it?  That way she can still see you but cannot leave her room.  If you're not consistent with what you are doing for your nighttime routine she will not make the change.

    My DD just turned 3.

    1.  She goes to bed between 8 and 830.  I assume she falls asleep quickly because I don't hear her.  She wakes up between 7 and 730.

    2.  She naps about 2.5 hours each day.  Sometimes longer.  Rarely shorter.  I don't think a 3 hour nap is that long really.

    3.  She potty trained around 26 mos during the day and about 1 month later at night.

    4.  She never took a paci.  If she had I'd have taken it away by now.

  • 1. What time does your LO got to bed typically and wake?   We do bath, brush teeth, and read 2 books around 6:45ish.  She is usually asleep by 7.. My problem is that every night around midnight, she wakes up screaming bloody murder and makes her way to our room.  I can't seem to break her of it after 2 weeks of VERY little sleep trying to get her to go back to her room.  She doesn't sleep in our bed, but I'm still unsure of how to keep her in her bed after she wakes up at midnight.  Very frusturating

    2. Does LO still nap?  DD still naps 3 hours at daycare from 12-3! Yes, she naps 1.5-2 hours each day.  3 hours seems REALLY long

    3.  Is your LO potty trained?  Yes, she is potty trained with very few accidents.  But honestly, I didn't do any sort of method.  She told me one morning that she didn't want a pull up, but wanted panties instead.  So I said ok and she did it on her own.  I did buy cute Princess and Minnie Mouse panties and talked them up a lot before hand though. They will do it on their own time.  Less painful for you and her.

    4.  If your LO uses a paci when do you plan on stopping?  No more paci.  I am a mean mommy and waited for her to have a cold.  She wasn't sleeping well anyways, so I figured I would take it away while I was already sleep deprived. haha mean I know

  • 1. What time does your LO got to bed typically and wake?
We are usually in bed by 9pm, bath/brush/read before hand. She wakes up around 7-      8, and usually sleeps right through unless she is sick...like now!
    2. Does LO still nap?
Oh yes! she goes around 12-1 for 2 hours sometimes 3
    3.  Is your LO potty trained?
Not yet, I was planning on starting this week, but she is still kinda sick, so I'm going to        wait until she is feeling good again.
    4.  If your LO uses a paci when do you plan on stopping?
She hated the pacifier from day 1, so we never got into it!

  • Mine is kind of going through a crap sleeping phase.

    1. What time does your LO got to bed typically and wake?   We usually start the sleep process in her room around 7:30 but most nights she's not actually asleep until 8 or 8:30.   And she wakes anywhere between 5am and 7am.

She goes into her bed around 7:30. Some nights she's asleep by 8. Other nights, she's still up at 9:30. She wakes up on her own between 8-9; I wake her up at 7 for school.

    2. Does LO still nap?  DD still naps 3 hours at daycare from 12-3!  I think this may be why she takes so long to fall asleep.  On the weekends she naps about 2 hours.

She dropped her nap about 2 weeks ago. It suuuuuucks.

    3.  Is your LO potty trained?  If not have you started the process or when do you plan starting?

    She PTed at 2.5 years

    4.  If your LO uses a paci when do you plan on stopping?  My DD still uses the paci for naps & night time and sometimes during the day if she's cranky.

She was using one at night and naps. I took it from her about a month ago. That's when her sleep went to hell...she used to sleep 7PM-8AM with not a peep after I put her down, then a 2 hour nap. That stopped when the paci was removed.

I feel your pain with the terrible sleeper 2.5 year old. We are just now coming out of the crap. 2.5 is a fun age where they transition into needing less sleep at the same time as they start to develop more active imaginations. For parents it sucks, and honestly you just need to fine what works for your kid. Ask her why she doesn't want you to leave the room and try to address her answer. It took 2 weeks to get an answer out of DD so just keep asking telling her you want to help but need to know what the problem is first. 1. Bed time routine starts around 7:15, lights out just after 8 and she is usually asleep by 8:30. She wakes up between 7 and 8. Bedtime routine used to take 30 min, now it is nearly 3 times that for her to wind down from her day. 2. No longer naps. That was part of our solution to her terrible bedtime, if she was really tired she made fewer excuses and went to bed easier. 3 hours seems like a very long nap for a 2.5 year old, perhaps she simply isn't tired when you are trying to put her to bed. 3. Potty trained at 24 months using the 3 day method, but kept her in diapers for sleeping. 4 months later she literally told us she didn't want to wear diapers anymore and she would just hold her pee all night. 4. Never used a paci.

  • I'm only speaking from my experience, but we had to take our 2 yr old's nap away pretty much completely.  We'll still let her sleep early like at 11 or 12 if possible but NO longer than 45 minutes.  I wake her up.  Her long naps were ruining bedtime.  Ever since we took her naps away she goes RIGHT to sleep at around 7:45.
  • my son is only 26 months and still in crib, but:

    1) start bedtime between 6:45 and 7 and leave him around 7:30. for awhile pre daylight savings it was closer to 7:30/8 but that's been moved earlier and he's usually asleep by 7:30. he wakes up anywhere from 6 to 7:30, but usually between 6:30 and 7. sometimes he hears his younger brother, which accounts for some earlier wake ups.

also, we've always had his door closed, never thought twice about it.

    2) most days. goes down around 1, can take up to 20 min to fall asleep and it's usually an hour to hour and a half. he was a 45 min napper for his first year, so it feels like an eternity now. every once in awhile he fights it hard and i keep him in crib for an hour then give up.

    3) nope. he has a potty and sometimes asks to go on. he's peed in it twice since we bought it around 18 months. not pushing it at all, but when he asks we strip him down and put him on.

    3) nope.
