vent: so upset with my sister nbr

As a little back story, my sister had my niece when she was 18 and lived at home with my parents until about a year ago (when they bought her and her fiance a duplex and rehabbed it for them... don't even get me started). Needless to say she's always had a lot done for her and, although I love her dearly, It has made her less than self sufficient. When she moved out she took our 7 year old family dog with her because my niece was very attached to it. Well my mom told me this story today... Friday night the dog was whining non stop for most of the night. My sister got annoyed and locked her out of the bedroom. When they got up in the morning there were many spots of blood all over the house. When BIL took her out she would start peeing, then cry and stop, then start again. Her pee was like straight blood! When she told my mom about this my mom said that it was likely a kidney or bladder infection and that she should take her to the vet for an antibiotic. Sisters reaction: "no. We looked it up online and if it's what we think it is it will clear up in a few days. Besides... We can't afford a vet visit right now because of the wedding." As of today the dog still hasn't been to the vet! I'm so angry I could spit! If you can't afford a very visit you shouldn't own an animal! I can't believe that my sister would let our sweet, gentle dog be in pain for this long. I'm just disgusted.

  • Poor dog!! Was your mom okay with her answer? Can you take the dog in?

I would go over there myself take the dog in. It's not the dogs fault! Poor thing. Ugh. I won't even get started how much I have spent on my dogs' health but it's worth every penny and the responsibility of any pet owner.

A bladder infection untreated in a dog can lead to very bad things btw. My mom's old dog had them. Very painful and potentially dangerous.

Eta my moms dog also had kidney stones which was causing blood in the urine. It could be those too, which are also excruciatingly painful and potentially dangerous.

  • This is so sad. I would get that dog to a doctor asap.

  • I don't even know what to say to my sister right now. My mom was very upset, too. It sounded like she was going to take her herself if she didn't bring her tonight. I'll admit that my own dog drives me crazy and I'm not his biggest fan but if he were sick I'd have him at the vet as soon as possible!

  • I'm sorry. If possible, you or/and your mom should take the dog to an emergency vet tonight. And then one of you should keep said dog until it is feeling better at the least. If I was your mom, I wouldn't give dog back and niece would have to visit it at my house. Poor doggy.

I'm not trying to be mean and she is your sister but it sounds like she suffers from self centered, tough disorder. My sister as well suffers from this and I'm desperately trying to find a cure. I hope she realizes she can't properly care for the dog and gives it back to your parents.

You hit the nail on the head. I would gladly take the dog. She's such a good girl.

  • I wish I didn't read this :o3 :((
  • I would break into her house, steal the dog and take it to the vet! This disgusts me!

This. That just breaks my heart. :(
  • Ugh. So sad. I hope the dog gets some vet attention ASAP.! :(
  • If the poor doggie is peeing blood, it sounds like it's something more then just a UTI, could be kidney or bladder stones, very painful! I hope your sweet doggie gets to a vet ASAP, and comes to live with you.

  • I wish I hadn't read this either @zoeyjack :( so sad. I hope someone gets the dog to the vet as soon as possible. I've spent a ton on my dog and I'd do it again in a heart beat. Poor pup :(

Where I live, it's illegal to do that. The charge is something like failure to provide veterinary attention. Seriously, take the dog in, and do not give her back to your sister. If your sister is allowed to take the dog one day, then you can take her now. If she can't be responsible for her, then she does not get to keep her. Simple. Someone needs to dole out a little tough love to your sister :(
  • Disgusting. Just a shame. The poor dog. :((

  • Poor doggie. I hope you or your mom can get to the pup and take her in. It sounds serious. I think your sister would want to be seen by a doctor if she was crying and peeing blood, no? :(
  • Poor puppy! :((
  • My mom is taking her in the morning. She says she seems better, is eating and drinking normally and peeing less frequently. I'm glad she's getting looked at. I wish my parents could see how self centered my sister is. But despite all her flaws she's the golden child. I'm sure this will soon be forgotten too. I'm just sickened that she could be this neglectful. Thank god she is responsible as a mother.

  • That poor dog!! This breaks my heart :(.
  • wtf?!  How could anyone be so heartless?  At the very least she should have asked your mom to help out with the vet bill.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.  :(  I'm glad that she at least takes care of her kid?

  • I work at a vet. This is terrible! We had a lady bring her cat in because he couldn't pee. The doctor did surgery but she said she couldn't pay. He has you pay right away, as he runs this business himself from his home and he'd never seen this lady or cat before. He said she had to pay before the cat could leave. This was the end of September. That cat is still there. After like 2 weeks the vet decided to keep him as an office cat. I mean its good she brought the cat in cause he could have died from it...but why do you have the cat if you can't pay?

  • You should take the dog back immediately. If she cannot care for her properly, she should not have her. People can't be saving her all the time.

  • That's just cruel.  Poor pup :(
  • Please tell me your parents are taking the dog back.  If not, I would definitely call and report her for crulety.  I don't care if she is the "golden" child.  She's irresponsible and uncaring.  To me this is heartless.

  • I'm glad to hear that @lrichmond86. That dog is lucky to have you and your parents to look after her.

This is unacceptable. That dog is a defenseless creature that is being neglected. I'm not flaming you, but I believe that if you are aware of animal abuse or neglect, it is your moral imperative to do something about it. And yeah, after that little incident, I'd be either adopting the animal myself or keeping the dog until I could rehome it. People like your sister don't deserve to have pets. Shame on her.
Yep. Where do you live? I'm happy to call the ASCPA there and report abuse. Refusing to get medical treatment when it's needed is abuse.

If it was me, I would have been over there within the hour taking the dog to the vet and never returning it to the sister. I don't tolerate animal abuse at all.

  • I have been thinking about this post all day long and it infuriates me. Especially, if you know my backstory with our pup in my avatar. There is absolutely no excuse and I just re-read that this happened on Friday. 4 days later. I hope this pup is getting medical attention as we speak and that irreparable damage has not been done. Please update with how she is doing. Your sister disgusts me.

I don't really agree with this. Things like surgery don't come up often when you have pets. That's like saying don't have a baby because they could have medical issues you can't pay for. Thank goodness fur insurance right.

  • Sorry, ladies, it was a busy day and i couldn't update. My mom says she's doing better. Eating, drinking, acting herself. Vet said UTI. Glad that's all it was and treatable, but still upset she had to be uncomfortable for so long. Not sure what going to happen with the living situation. My mom was pretty upset. Maybe this will be the wake-up call...

Well I didnt quite mean it like that. I guess what my real point was she didnt even care enough to come back for the cat. I mean having the cat, she should have known it was possible that something like this could happen. The whole situation was weird. It almost seemed like a way to dump of the cat. But the cat is absolutely happy here, so maybe it was all for the best.

Eta: It was like a whole 2 week ordeal just trying to talk to the girl. She didnt seem like she cared about the cat at all. The cat was really skinny when it came in. Not like scary skinny but I dont think she cared enough to take proper care. So for the cat, I think its good she flaked and left him. Hes super healthy now.

@lrichmond86 Glad the dog got looked at and is being treated!
