everyone realizes that growth % is NOT a test score right?

because from the posts i read on here, it seems to be confusing some of you.  90% does not = better than a baby in 5th% IF THEY ARE STILL ON THEIR NORMAL GROWTH CURVE.    A higher percentile doesn't mean the baby is better, healthier or  more well fed FFS!   for the past 5 years,   my son was consistently in the 5th-20th depending on his age / growth spurts etc, but always remained on his normal curve.  However, he was thriving, and NOTHING was wrong with my supply.   Some kids are smaller, which is reflected in the percentages. it's not a test, a lower percent is not "failing."   i don't know why this is so hard to grasp!

  • Crap! I thought 70 and above was passing. ;) My dd has failed her entire life around 10%. We will see where she is Wednesday. I'm sure she's good since her clothes are getting tighter. ;)

  • My DD1 was consistently in the five to 10 percentile. She is just a small girl. My niece was always in the 40th percentile and my sister in law wanted her to gain weight because she wanted her to be a 70th or 80th....I dont get people wanting to have a big kid. Dd2 is right between the 40's and 50's.

Yes, but I can imagine when your baby is in one of those lower %iles and isn't weighed frequently, it can be stressful thinking that your baby might be falling into the Failure to Thrive category.

This exactly. One poster posted today about her legitimate concerns about baby not even being on the percentage chart. This is pretty insensitive timing for this post. JMO.

Agreed. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I'm a little sick of CV randomly popping on every few days or so, judging the board and posting a bunch of random dear diary posts. That's not contributing.

I'm not sure why anyone is surprised or would flame you for this observation as that's all she's ever done. It's been amusing at times, but mostly just dumb.

  • Just wanted to pop in again and say I did not see the post by @missgspu until aftet this...so my response has nothing to do with her post. Thats a whole different story!
  • Owen still hadn't reached the % charts at his 4 mo well and his Dr was happy with his gain (right at 1/2 oz a day) and showed no concerns; however I would have been very, very concerned if my Dr hadn't assured me that all was/is well. In fact, I still do worry and get anxious before his appts bc it's really scary having a preemie especially when he is gaining on the lower end of the spectrum.

  • My LO was in the 10th% then jumped to 20th then dropped down to around 15th, my pedi was never concerned but I beat myself up for it. My LO is just one case, but this is a good reminder for me (not that I've posted about it) but to keep myself in check and not over think growth percentiles. Totally different then many of the stories on the board, serious hugs to those with failure to thrive and low weight concerns!

I haven't noticed that with ppl on this board, but it's like when ppl on Facebook post their LOs growth stats and I always just wanna comment 'nobody gives a crap!'

First of all I am usually mobile, but @Mae208: You are 56 wks pregnant!

My kid is on track with his growth curve and remains in the 97th percentile. Let me tell you what that means: I am suffering from severe Carpal Tunnel from lugging my giant child around.

But you get an A+ and that's what matters!
