Anyone surprised that their LO is a ginger?

Random post. My son is turning out to be strawberry blonde, which is a huge surprise to me and MH.

I have dark brown hair, MH has light blonde hair. We don't have any gingers in our immediate or extended families. Don't get me wrong, it's adorable and I love it, especially with his bright blue eyes and creamy skin, but I never expected to have a kid with red(ish) hair.

Anyone else?

This is only vaguely related. But after I gave birth, my hair grew back red. In the sun you can see that E has red highlights in her hair. We have no redheads in our family either, although my grandmother is Scottish. Any Scottish or Irish in your background?

Yes, I have both Irish and Scottish in my background- more Scottish than Irish.

Then you both probably have some lingering recessive genes for ginger in there somewhere.

I was really shocked when I suddenly had red hair all around my face. But now I just think of it as a constant reminder of my Nana and it makes me smile.

Hannah is not Ginger, but the red hair gene is there on my mom's side of the family. Which brings me to the funny part...

My grandmother, said about each of her great grandchildren when they were one or under "oh I see red in there!!" Ya their all either blond or brunette. I think she just wants a Ginger baby so bad lol

Believe it or not when DS was younger he had very light brown hair with hints of "ginger" in the sunlight. My hair is dirty blonde and DH's is black but my grandmother was a redhead! Now his hair is just light brown. It might darken up a little as he gets older.

Yes! No one in our immediate family has red hair although it does run in our families. So it was very surprising to have a red haired baby, although it's more of a blondish red and she has hazel eyes. So I don't really consider her a "ginger".

Yes. I'm not sure it will stay, but at 3 months old my son has strawberry blond hair. I have red hair, but my husband is Asian, so we were not expecting a ginger baby with big blue eyes. His twin sister looks Asian with thick black hair. They are an odd pair.

Every few years I get red highlights during the summer. I just noticed yesterday that A has a lot of red highlights. DH is 100% Irish, but there are NO redheads in either family.....unless you count the 1 red cheek DH gets if he grows a beard. How strange!

(ETA: we all have brown hair, A and I have very dark brown hair)

I have a ginger friend whose husband is Asian and their 2nd child turned out to be a ginger (but looks Asian otherwise). She gets very interesting comments from strangers!

Yes! I have a friend who is blonde and her husband is Asian and their 6mo daughter is a ginger with light eyes! She looks so exotic it's awesome.
