food question...kinda random

hi everyone...just a couple of random food questions...
1. i bought ground flaxseed for my kiddos.  i was thinking of sprinkling it in to oatmeal, shakes and pancakes/waffles.  does anybody know how much to give?  i was thinking about a tablespoon or two?
2. what do you guys put on sandwiches/wraps to not make them dry?  it's too early for mayo, right?  cream cheese?  pesto?
thanks for your help!
btw twins are 22 months.

  • 1. well, if you're just talking about in a bowl of oatmeal, for a kid, 1-2tbsp may noticeably change the taste/texture.  I'd start with a tsp or so.  personally, I find ground up chia seed (i use a coffee grinder to grind it) makes less difference in taste.  Also, you can use either of them in your pancakes and muffins (though I'd sub out no more than 1/8th cup of each cup of flour).

    2. mashed avocado!  especially if it's a meat and/or cheese based sandwich.

awwesome!  thanks so much...and the avocado is a great idea!
  • Flax definitely alters the taste, so I wouldn't more than a tsp, maybe even less. I don't particularly like the taste flax gives things so I don't know if I could even do a tsp. DDs like chia seeds, though!

Why would it be too early for mayonnaise? I would use anything from avocado like Tiffany said to mayo, mustard, cream cheese, a salad dressing, etc. Whatever they liked and went w/ the sandwich.
good to know...i'll definitely try the chia seeds too.
you know...i don't know why i thought it might be too early for mayo...maybe b/c of the raw eggs?  so i'm glad that it can be options.  thanks for the ideas!
  • No help with the flax, but as someone who dislikes mayo I tend to use:
    avocado/guacamole
    hummus
    yogurt dip
    salad dressing
    pesto
    bbq sauce

    1. Not sure, sorry!

    2. I've given DS1 some light mayo, but hunmus is also a great idea. Or sour cream or mustard.

excellent!  i've actually been looking for an easy granola bar recipe too...thanks so much!
  • 2 - I don't necessarily think it's too early for mayo, but DD is allergic to egg, so it's out for us. A lot of people will use ranch dressing (again, out for us). Some things we've used instead: sour cream, ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, Italian dressing, other salad dressings, tomatoes, salsa, you could probably use cottage cheese, pickles, relish, vinegar and oil (think sub sandwiches).
