Let's talk NURSING IN PUBLIC

Ok ladies...LO is 4 weeks and we are taking a trip to Disneyland this weekend. I'm starting to get worried about NIP.

What are your tips, experiences, anxieties, stories, etc??

Re: Let's talk NURSING IN PUBLIC

  • I may have to NIP for the first time today. I'm a little nervous but I have a nursing cover which I will use and I'll have DH stay with me for support. There will always for people who give you awkward looks but your feeding your baby which is a perfectly natural thing. I say just act normal like it doesn't bother you. If people see that your comfortable with it, they may feel more confortable about it as well.

  • While I'm not BF, my sister-in-law would breastfeed in public and she used a blanket to cover up. It really was great because it would just drape over them and no one would see anything.

  • When I am going out in public, I wear a nursing bra, nursing tank, and a button up shirt.  These are all easy to undo under my udder cover.  I hate when I have on a regular shirt and I have to hold that up, while holding baby and trying to keep the udder cover in place at the same time.  I hope you have a wonderful time!
  • I'm not a fan of myself NIP. I don't think twice about anyone else doing it, so I'm sure others feel the same. There might be nursing stations in the park. It's a room in a building where moms go to nurse. Check the website. I just nursed in a red robin with my cover and it was NBD.

  • There really isn't anything taboo about nursing in public, I don't understand the need for it to be all capitalized...

Disney is a family friendly place, they might even have nursing areas/bathrooms for nursing moms. (If I'm wrong, I've been clearly living too long in Europe where it is geared much more towards nursing moms)

People provided you with great suggestions. Wear a nursing cover if it makes you more comfortable and a nursing friendly top. If you wear a cover, test it out at home.

    Enjoy Disney!

  • Sorry to jack this thread but speaking of NIP, does anyone have good tips for how you handle holding the baby while nursing?

At home and at family's homes I always rely on a boppy or just pillows. Then when I have to nurse her in public under my nursing cover, she's too small to nurse without significantly holding her up and it's so exhausting / awkward. Do I just need to practice the cradle hold more? Or are there better ways?

It is harder since many of our LOs are so much smaller now, but I've gotten quite good at the cradle hold. I cradle his body at a sideways angle to my boobs and hold him with my hand at the back of his neck. The rest of my arm is cradling his body as close to my boobs as possible. It takes a bit of practice, try not to overly worry you cannot smoother them. Even if you have bigger boobs like myself :)

  • Thanks for the advice ladies!

With DD1 I was always too self conscious to NIP and I was always envious of the moms who did it without any concern. Now I feel more comfortable with the idea of it.

@ccip82 all caps was just to emphasize the thread's topic. :D
  • I've NIP several times, with and without a blanket. DS doesn't care, but I don't like to cover him fully (over the head) with a blanket. I cover his body and the back of his head with a blanket and that helps cover me more. I second a nursing tank top. I just got one at Walmart for $15 and I looooove it. I agree with the others that you should just act like it's normal because it is. Be confident and practice at home.

  • I NIP all the time.  It is fairly normal in my area.  I only used a cover with DS1 when he was going through an 'easily distracted' phase.  Nobody can see anything and if I didn't NIP I would be house bound which would drive me crazy with our long winters.

  • I NIP all the time, but I was much more self conscious initially with DS1. I prefer to wear a regular shirt and nursing take underneath. That way, only a small portion of my breast can actually be exposed when I lift the shirt up and the tank down. I use a blanket to the side of LOs head, not over his head. So between his head and the blanket, you can't see anything exposed. And I nurse using a cradle hold. Just practice, it will get easier.
  • Tbh I feel like it's almost harder to find a comfortable place to sit than it is to actually feed LO. Yesterday we were at target and I chose to go sit in a fitting room not bc I was uncomfortable nip, but because I could sit with a backrest and hold him in an easy nursing position. Also not sure what the weather will be like, but when it's hot out it can also be more challenging to nurse. Although you can always find a bench to nurse hopefully they have a designated area for you to nurse to make you more comfortable sitting or finding a nursing position or with a more comfortable temperature if it's hot out.

I have been having trouble with this too. It's just not super comfortable (physically) for me to NIP yet though I'm not at all socially opposed to it!

  • I haven't fully NIP yet but have nursed a couple of times in the car in parking lots. I still rely on the Boppy to support DD; once I get the hang of nursing her by just using my arms, I'll NIP. I have a nursing cover a friend got me for my baby shower and a couple of nursing tops from Gap [I need to get more] that help make it fairly easy to do so.

I'm absolutely not against NIP, but like someone else said, it's sometimes easier to nurse in a changing room or bathroom or something because it's more physically comfortable to sit and nurse in a space like that.

  • The baby care centers at Disney are wonderful! Quiet, cool, with rocking chairs and changing tables. Hope you have a great time :)

  • I've NIP a couple times, and I still feel a little uneasy about it (which wasn't helped by getting gawked at by a creepy man yesterday). I don't use a cover, but like PP I wear a nursing tank with a shirt over and then I cover the back of DS head and my shoulder with a blanket or sweater.

  • Gawkers suck :( I nurse whenever and wherever I need to and I would bet when I do that most people aren't even aware. But I've had people give me dirty looks a few times and it's like, for real? There are women walking around with boobs and butts hanging out, but you're offended by me feeding my child discreetly under a nursing cover? Some people unfortunately are just ignorant I guess. But I still NIP anyway! :)

Lurking, but I always tried to find the end of a bench so I could drop my elbow onto the arm, or would brace my elbow on my diaper bag. I'd then let my hand angle downwards and lean back a bit so my lap and stomach were taking some of the weight.

A friend with a different style diaper bag would latch baby and then pull her diaper bag onto her lap and rest her arms on that.

  • If you want to use a cover, I suggest practicing at home to get a feel for it.
I love the idea of wearing a scarf and using it to cover.

I use a cover as often as possible but sometimes it just isn't working for me and I go coverless.

I would have called the gawker out. I don't deal well with that shit.
I'm not very confrontational, but I asked him if there was a problem and proceeded to stare him down as he awkwardly walked away.
