Hot Stone Massage...

Hello Everyone!  My husband and I just found out we are having a baby!!!  EDD is 10/10/14.  I am only 4 weeks along.  Anyway, I received a gift card for a hot stone massage and was wondering if I could use it.  I am aware that I am probably being a little paranoid and that some people could be pregnant and not know for a while, but since I know, I just don't want to anything that could be bad for the baby.  Thanks for your thoughts on this!

Re: Hot Stone Massage...

  • I had massages often during my first pregnancy. Just tell your massage therapist so they can limit pressure on your belly.

  • I went for a regular deep tissue massage today, and it was divine. I've read (I think on this site) that massage during the first trimester doesn't increase your risk of miscarriage. I'd worry more about the hot stone part, since you might be more sensitive to heat. I know I can't find a comfortable temperature. I'm either freezing or about to just out of my skin because it's boiling in here!

  • Congratulations & welcome! I would def check that it's a licensed therapist who can do prenatal massage. Also my Dr said it is best to wait until after first trimester for massages (pedicures are okay though!). And you should never be so hot that you're constantly sweating or have pink skin (aka when bathing, and I assume also with massages).
  • I think massage in general is safe in early pregnancy, not sure about hot stones. I had a Swedish massage yesterday and told the massage therapist beforehand. She turned off the heater on the table and also avoided certain pressure points. It was lovely. I seriously fell asleep and was also drooling. Oops....

  • I have a massage coupon too, but thought I would wait and ask the OBGYN just to be safe. I hear prenatal massages are awesome throughout pregnancy so I thought I might give it a shot after I get the OK.

  • I would ask to be safe.

  • I had two prenatal massages when I was pregnant with DD and they were amazing. I would suggest to go later in your pregnancy (unless it expires soon and maybe without the hot stones- not sure about those) because you will really be wanting one later on!

  • i worked at a massage therapy center (i'm an esthetician) for 3 years and my place of employment would not perform a prenatal massage until you were in your 2nd trimester and even then it was more of a swedish massage, no deep tissue.  i don't know what the recommendations are as far as hot stone while pregnant.  like the other ladies say, ask your dr. and your massage therapist.

  • My sister gave birth to a sweet lill girl last month and as far as I remember, she used to get massage in her pregnancy. She used to visit Belle Vie Day Spa and there were no complications at the time of delivery. Still to be sure about your case, and whether you should get massage, I think you need to discuss it with your doc.
