Pregnant after IF

Not PAIF Related: Making Friends as an adult

So my husband and I just moved from New Jersey to the Charlotte area and I have no idea how to make friends! Doesn't help that we are down to one car at the moment because dh's car died, so I am trapped at home all day. I got a Groupon for a prenatal yoga class (haven't been able to go yet since h has my car!), but otherwise, how do you make friends? Every time I see a pregnant woman, I wanna go up to her and ask if she wants to be my friend! LOL yeah, I'm that desperate and bored! It's hard to make new friends when you're an adult and it would be nice to meet other couples that we could have dinner's and play dates with!

Has anyone relocated and found a good way to meet new people without looking like a creepy stalker?

  • Meetup.com.....I've gotten very active with a moms group in my area through meet-up. There are some groups for expecting women too. You could also sign up for some prenatal classes. I did a childbirth class through an independent teacher (it was a small group) and made a lasting friend.

  • I moved to Colorado years ago from GA, and ran into the same thing. Most of the friends I've made have been either through work (I'm a SAHM now though so no more opportunities there) or neighbors. But two of my closest friends I met through pre-natal yoga! We still get together monthly with the kids, the oldest of which are now 7. I am pretty introverted and a homebody, so I feel your pain!

    Me: 42. DH: 46.

    1st Pregnancy: MC, 11/19/00.

    2nd Pregnancy: DS born 04/10/06.

    3rd Pregnancy: CP, 03/11.

4th Pregnancy: MMC, D&C 11/30/11, Genetic testing revealed Trisomy 4.

5th Pregnancy: Ectopic, 2 doses of Methotrexate unsuccessful, surgery 4/10/12, right tube removed.

Tried Letrozole January 2013-July 2013 (including 2 IUIs), all BFN.  After 2 1/2 years of trying for child #2, decided to "give up" after July cycle, based on AMA.

August 16, 2013:  BFP our first month of "not trying!"  Still in shock.  Beta #1 (14dpo): 183.  Beta #2 (17dpo):  611.  Ultrasound 8/30/13: baby measured 6 weeks, 1 day, heart rate of 118 bpm!
Ultrasound 9/13/13:  8 weeks, heart rate of 176!
    Baby is due 4/26/14

I did briefly check out meetup.com but it didn't look like there were many mom's groups. One looked good until it said they weren't accepting pregnant women or women with children over 42 months. Lol

I am taking hospital tours tomorrow, so I am hoping to sign up for the childbirth classes after that! I hope I will be lucky to find a friend there like you were!

  • Oh I also wanted to add that if your interested and able to work out you can check out stroller strides. It's a fitness class for pregnant moms and moms with babies. A lot of fun and very social.

  • It is hard to make friends as an adult! Most my friends are either past or current co-workers and now recently I joined a twin mom's group and I'm starting to talk and hang out with them more. I second a meetup or mom's group!

  • Cookies. Seriously, I'm originally from KY, and when we moved up to Ohio, and then moved around before buying our house, I baked cookies and introduced myself to my neighbors. I also go to church, so it's pretty easy to meet new friends there as well. I'm over of those people who's never met a stranger, though. One other thing I did was spend a lot of time at the local farmers market - it's held downtown here every Saturday morning, and a lot of people come every week. They're very open to talking and making friends. It's probably easier in a small town, though. :/

  • I joined meetup, but chickened out!
I just thought the idea of going out to dinner with people that I didn't know was weird. I am thinking of joining the newcomers club.

  • Most of my friends are through synagogue - places of worship tend to be good for building community.  Did you move for a new job for DH?  Hopefully he'll make friends there who turn into couple friends.   Or maybe you could try volunteering somewhere for a cause that speaks to you?  Good luck!

  • Thanks for the tips, ladies! I will definitely try the prenatal yoga class and I am going to sign up for as many education classes at the hospital that I can and hope I meet some people in there! When the weather isn't so bipolar, we will be getting out more with Parker and hopefully can make some friends that way. We met a great couple through Parker in New Jersey, so maybe he can make us friends again! Lol

@weeklyplanner I hope you and your husband make it out of New Jersey soon! We just made the decision and he started applying for jobs and just forced ourselves to do it!

  • I used to live in Charlotte - it is a town full of transplants from somewhere else, so almost everyone you see is probably thinking the same thing you are!  When I lived there, I met a lot of people through a local sorority alumnae chapter, and also a local college alumni chapter - at least then I had some type of connection to the people I was meeting, which made me more comfortable showing up to a random event where I didn't know anyone.  Good luck!
