I'm in feeding hell

So, I've posted before about how Q is hating the bottle but LOVING his solids.  Well, it's gotten worse.  He's now up twice a night (if we're lucky, the first time is before we go to bed but sometimes it's midnight and 4am or some crazy bullshit).  It's no wonder he's up - he doesn't get enough formula calories during the day but something has got to give.  Today at daycare he drank a grand total of 1.5 ounces (he got 3 more via formula mixed with cereal).  Granted, he's congested so this is worse than normal but still.   We tried back off solids to give him no option but a bottle if he was hungry but it seems he'd rather starve.  We've tried warm, cold, more often, less often, sippy cups.  Nothing is working.  I'll get up with him at night as much as I need to so that he gets what he needs but how the hell do I get him back on the bottle during the DAY??

Re: I'm in feeding hell

  • Following this to get advice as well. Only my LO has never taken a bottle. Even when I had to have surgery and couldn't feed her for four days the only way she would eat is if we mixed my breastmilk with a little cereal and used a syringe while she sucked on her two fingers. This kid absolutely refuses a bottle.

  • I've never gone through this, but wonder if maybe different bottles/ nipples would help. Maybe change it up completely and see if that throws him off bc it's not what he is expecting and then maybe likes it. And I almost hate to mention this, but maybe a nipple shield when he is nursing so that he has that plastic association?
  • So, a couple details I left out.  He's exclusively formula fed and he's a PITA about the nipple flow.  He switched to level 3s at daycare months ago but at home he still uses 2s because he "chokes" and carries on if we use a level 3.  Obviously has a flare for the dramatic like his big brother because I know he can drink from them just fine lol

Last night he was up at 11 and 2 and sucked down a bottle both times.  We tried feeding him at 6:30 and you'd think he'd be hungry but he only ate 2 ounces.  So  I brought a banana to daycare for him and asked that they skip the usual breakfast, try to push another bottle in a while and let him eat the banana.  He won't get much in him but I think part of this is his obsession with the fun of food.  Maybe playing with the banana will trick him into thinking he's actually getting any lol

  • @elmoali that's what I was going to suggest...going to finger foods and away from purees.

Ciahanna I implore you not to use a pin to widen your nipple holes, it can weaken the nipple and cause pieces to break off in your LO's mouth which is a huge choking hazard.

  • Could he have an ear infection? There aren't always symptoms but sometimes the sucking hurts worse than swallowing. X barely ate bottles during his but loved his solids.

Also the flow as everyone else said. We jumped from 2's to 3's and its light and day. He'd eat 2.5 oz with the slower ones because he got bored/tired. Now he eats 5 oz at a time.

  • Have you talked to the pedi about reflux? I'm just wondering because solids are so much easier for reflux babies to keep down so maybe that's why he's ok with them? If the formula keeps coming up on him it would explain why he's not into drinking it anymore. L has reflux we didn't know about until he was 5 months old and we only figured it out then because he was constantly congested. Good luck!! I hope he starts eating for you!

@WasNotWas Thanks! I feel awful for suggesting it to elmoali now.Wish I had known that seven months ago when we did it to all of her orginial bottles :( We just switched to Avent so I'll just buy new nipples.

It's one of those things that absolutely works in a pinch, but shouldn't be a long-term solution. It's been done for YEARS, so I'm sure our parents would call me crazy, but why risk it, ya know?

  • @elmoali Any progress with this?

Ah, I've been in work hell too lol  Well, we made some changes and he's doing better.  He's not as stuffy, which I'm sure was a huge part of the problem.  We've also moved away from feeding him so many purees.  Like I thought, he's more into the IDEA of eating than the eating, it seems.  So he's been content to sit in the highchair attempting to eat finger foods and then after a long time of that distraction, he'll drink more of a bottle.  He's back to about 20 ounces a day (still low but more normal for him).  I'm keeping an eye on it and haven't ruled out asking the doctor about potential reflux.  Thanks for asking!
