Babies on the Brain

Intro, I guess. And a question about IUD experiences

Morning! Geeze this is awkward. So I’m an old TKer (old P&E board) and TB lurker from way back in the day. Been married about 4 years, together 7. We’re finally in the discussion mode for TTC #1.

We’ve just moved halfway across the country to Texas for my job transfer. As soon as H lands a job here, we’ll start TTC. We’re hoping that’s somewhere around 1-3 months. Then I get my IUD out, give my body a month or so to sort it’s shit out and then start doing the whole TCOYF thing.

So I guess I should throw a question in here. And it’s a bit convoluted, I guess.

For those that 1. Had a Mierana and 2., it hurt, did it hurt as bad coming out? I’m legit scared to get this SOB out. It hurt so bad going in that I threw up and the doctor send me straight in for the vag cam to make sure it was inserted correctly. It was, I’m just a wimp apparently. So I’m honestly more scared to get it out than I am at the thought of all that pregnancy/birth holds.

So yeah. Hey. I’ll probably stick around and chat for some time.

  • Hi there-my Mirena removal was significantly less painful than insertion for me.  I hope it's the same for you-- and it literally took 20 seconds.

If you are really worried-- why not pop a few ibuprofin before hand?

  • Did you have it removed immediately? Or do you mean when you started TTC? Not that it matters much. But I was thinking if you were in that much pain from it being in there that the relief of having it out might have masked the pain.

I did that for insertion, as per the consultation appointment. Didn't touch it. But really, once insertion was over and maybe half an hour had passed, I seemed to have a totally normal experience. I just had normal cramps for the rest of the day.

But yes, I will absolutely be doing that.

Oh, also. I have to find a new doctor in general. I know when I got it put in, I had to have a consultation and then come back the next day or week. Can I call and tell them I want it out? Or is it another 2 appt. process?

  • For me neither insertion nor removal was painful. I called to make an appointment for removal and they took it out then without any follow up. One shot deal. I also got pregnant the first cycle with it out (as in bfp 4 weeks after removal).
  • Thanks for the info. The whole thing is kind of overwhelming. I feel like I need to find a doctor that I want to be my OB through pregnancy. And I don't know a soul in this city.

  • Well thank you! I'm waiting to hear back from my local board about some doctors. I appreciate it!

  • I had the paragard (copper IUD) and having it taken out was not a big deal at all. They had me cough and it was out in seconds. I, however, never had any issue with it being put in either.
I would suggest getting it out sooner rather than later. It might take a few months for your cycle to regulate. I had mine out 6 months ago and still no pregnancy here. Good luck, you'll be fine :)
  • I'm dying to get it out right now. But I just can't do it until H lands a job. But I'm pretty sure the day he has an offer letter in hand, I'll be making my appointment!

No I had it removed about 10 months after insertion. It was causing me a lot of cramping and abdominal pain-- I think it was just not the right thing for me personally.

Nope-- I just called and said I wanted to make an appt for removal.  I think I was in there the next week.

  • I had my mirena removed 1/16/14 after having it for a year and a half.  Insertion was A-W-F-U-L.  But removal was not bad at all.  Seriously - piece of cake.  I just spotted for 2 days afterword and that was it.

My only regret is not having it out a month earlier when we decided to TTC.  I'm ready to start seriously TTC NOW - but I am in the limbo of not knowing what my cycle is like, when/if I ovulate, etc.  I have to wait for first AF, which could be 4-8 weeks.

UGH. NOT HELPING. You guys are going to keep it up and I'm going to rationalize all my perfectly thought out plans away!

Are you charting/temping while you wait?

Sorry!  At least know that you're not alone.  I always thought I would be so chill, just "if it happens, it happens."  But no...I am ready to take this on like a project.

I am not currently charting while I wait for first AF, but I did go ahead and sign up for FF and start reading the lessons.  I also bought the basal thermometer and have been taking it each morning (although not recording yet), just to get an idea of my "normal" range.  I just ordered a wondfo kit on amazon that includes 50 OPK strips & 20 HPT.  At least once CD1 finally arrives, I'll be ready.

    Good luck!!

Edit to add:  The ticker in my sig is kind of bogus.  I went ahead and set it up assuming that maybe my last CD1 was Jan 6th, while I still had mirena and had some spotting for about 12 hours.  But really, who knows.

  • I called and made the appointment for next week, when scheduling they asked me if I had it inserted there, so I don't know if that matters. I don't have to have a consultation or exam or anything, they will only be taking it out. I don't know if it hurts yet, I'll get back to you on that! Good luck with everything!

Oh yeah. A project I want to get started on ASAP.

I was thinking about going ahead and starting to temp, but I figured it will be completely off while I still have the IUD in. I'm just 'afraid' that the first couple of months will be wasted because I won't really know what I'm doing.

Good luck! Hope everything goes smoothly for you. That is something to think about though. They might have to get my medical records shipped down here.

  • I'm getting mine out this April for the second time. This time thought not getting another until after baby #1. I've had this one for 3 years. When I got the 1st one removed at the 5 Year mark it hurt like hell. Not like putting it in which took dilation paddles and a scalpel. The second insertion also hurt like a b but wasn't as bad. Hoping it's not too bad. Good luck.
  • I've got to wait until April because of my husbands job. I feel ya!
