It bothers me when people refer to their pets as the siblings of their actual children. My brother does this, and it always bothers me! I love my dog ad take good care of him, he's part of the family, but he's not an equal to my children, I'm sorry.
Ugh I SO agree with this. I think it is so weird! Or when people say their new puppy is preparing them for what it's like to have a baby bc it wakes them up to go outside early in the morning or the middle of the night or whatever. Um, no. Just... no. Having a puppy is not like having a baby. at all.
I have several mom friends who have no pets who would still disagree with you.
Disagree with my opinion that having a puppy is not at all like having a baby?
Yes. In fact most of them were thrilled when I got a dog because, to them, it meant I was prepping to have a baby. I disagree, but I'm also a FTM. So I thought I'd bring in the opinions of my mom friends of three or four for credibility.
Haha, that's interesting they would say that. I know for me personally (and for other mothers I know) taking care of a puppy was in no way the same as when DD got here. Either way, you'll find out for yourself soon enough!
ETA: (I hope the last comment didn't come out snarky, it was not intended in that way ) I just read your addition. I am talking about people who are taking it more seriously, like oh i can wake up with my dog this is exactly what waking up with a baby is like! I see it all the time on my FB feed.
I love cartoons, I watch Adventure time, DH and I are in the middle of The Justice League right now after we finished watching He-man. I would argue that, starting with animaniacs, the creators of newer cartoons do put stuff in for the parents to enjoy.
Also in some American cartoons do have a more complex plot than many people assume take adventure time. It is actually set in a post apocalyptic world, there are many complex story lines and characters as well as simplicity for the kids.
Lastly don't get me started on Anime.

Piggy-backing off of this (and @Serenla, I know you agree) - it makes me ragey when people think that comic books are for kids. Please don't just give your kids comic books. Most have extremely adult content and plot lines. There are kid-versions of comic books for kids.

DH just bought me a Deadpool comic...yeah, not something I'd hand off to my kids. Nor are they allowed to watch him play the video game.

I have to confess that ATM we refer to our cat as "baby cat", I refer to my husband as "daddy" occasionally when discussing the cat or talking to my cat (yes I talk to her, sometimes she actually replies! no not human speech, I'm not that wackadoodle) and he will call me "mummy". We have had her since she was 8 weeks old, she is now 12 and she is very much our baby. And yes we are a bit worried about her getting jealous of baby when she arrives - she is already very clingy when we go away (In many ways our cat acts like a dog!).
That said, there is no way she will be referred to as a "sister" of our baby, and once our actual child is here, we will stop calling our cat "baby" and cutesy stuff like that. I actually am starting to stop the cutesy baby stuff now because its starting to weird me out with sesame being 30 weeks along (yes we are one of *those* couples!!!
I think its cute when you don't have kids, but once you have kids its just weird.
And in addition - Yes I think that having a puppy or a kitten can teach you some things about preparing for a child. If you think you can get a baby anything and just put it in the house and ignore it, you shouldn't have a pet or child. I'm not saying it's exactly the same, but when you think that you need to give love, time and devotion to a creature that is completely dependent on you, then yes, there is definite similarity's there!

My mom is constantly referring to our cat as her grandcat and her cat is my sister. What? So does that make her cat my cats aunt? It's just weird and I hope once she has a real grandchild she will stop it with the Grandcat stuff.
My parents (really my dad's) dog gives my dog Christmas presents - new toys, rawhide bones, etc... I find it disturbing!

When I went to SDCC, I cosplayed as the Sex and Violence version of Domino one of the days. Sounds super kid-friendly, doesn't it? lol
It bothers me on some level that so many toys are gender role focused (I.e. little girls playing with kitchen sets, and little boys playing with Legos)... I feel it perpetuates gender expectations. And yet, I loved playing with my Playskool kitchen set when I was a little girl. What a hypocrite I am.
I'll hopefully encourage that tinker toys, reading, and Barbie are all okay as long as my little girl has fun!
Oh, and I also don't want to dress my little girl in pink...
@Thomas930 Exactly! DH finished Deadpool around Christmas. I watched while I knit because that stuff was hilarious. But there's no way our kiddo will be anywhere near when he's playing that!

I think it's stupid to be nervous about your baby being born on 4/20.
4/20 is my due date, and I'm not concerned about baby being born then. Yes, I know what 4/20 means to the stoner crowd. Yes, I know it is Hitler's Birthday. It is also Easter. DS was born the day before Easter. Maybe this one will be an Easter baby.

I'm not necessarily worried/nervous about it but DH does have a few friends that are pretty heavy smokers and the first one to make some stupid comment about it in relation to my kid might get bitch slapped. I don't particularly care either way about weed but you can be damn sure I won't put up with any "hahaha you're kid is gonna be such a stoner" comments. He will grow up to be who he is going to be whether it be a stoner or straight-laced stick-up-the butt person, regardless of what day he is born. For some reason things like that just really get under my skin.

4/20 is Hitler's birthday? You would think if people were going to get worked up about something, it would be that rather than some stupid weed holiday.
And the anniversary of the Columbine shooting. I'd be way more bummed about those. Regardless though...come on! It's just a date! DD was due on Leap Year -- I was just worried she wouldn't have an actual birthday!

I was an Easter Sunday morning baby that was 2 weeks late and I happened to be a super fat baby around 3 months, so my mom liked to make the joke that I was just waiting for the chocolate bunnies to come out. :-w

I hate the weekly posing in front of a chalkboard maternity pics, really just because it is so overdone and unoriginal to the point of ridiculousness. I'm looking at this lady here with her creepy fake smile
But I mean google image search it, I actually thought it was a cute, clever idea when I first saw it, years ago but now- BHARRRF.
And while I'm on it- do we need to have a professional photo shoot for everything? Now on the one hand, I think it's cool as hell more people are hiring professional photographers for life events they really want to remember and cherish, but do we need one for announcing you're pregnant AND a gender reveal AND the birth AND newborn pix etc etc.?
Maybe I've been on blogs or pinterest too much lately....
I guess if I could choose my child's birthday I wouldn't choose 4/20 but I agree there are worse dates like maybe 9/11 or something like that. I also wouldn't want my birthday on a major holiday like Christmas or New Years because I'm selfish and like to have a day all about me! I think 4/14/14 would be a pretty awesome birthday especially because 14 is my favorite number.
I refer to my dogs as my fur babies and I like them a lot more than a lot of people and a lot of people's kids. Sorry I'm not sorry. I feel like they "prepare" you to having a child not in that they are anything like people, but more that they are a responsibility. You have something that depends on you and you can't just forget about.
I don't want my baby born on April fools. I know it's stupid, and I know if it happens it happens, but i just would rather not.
Why do my boobs look so good? Then I peed on a stick...

Not to mention, outside of the US (and maybe Canada, don't know) its actually 20/4. And this coming from someone who used to totally enjoy celebrating 4/20. Its just another day and its not a big deal.

The dates thing really messes with my head 4/20 is easy enough to work out but 1/4.... to me that's April fools day!

My first ever UOs: I hate grape flavored anything. I think it's cruel to keep birds as pets. I also think it's pitiful when people who are arguing on the internet play the 'your grammar sucks, therefore I win' card. It's so childish and small minded. If you had ever worked with children with any kind of specific learning disabilities or forms of dyslexia, you would realize that even though their grammar/spelling/comprehension sucks, they can still be incredibly intelligent people. It's just a low blow, and makes you seem like an idiot because you have no better rebuttal...
RE other UOs: I love my dog. He is my baby. He's very much a person. When my child is born, my dog will only move down the attention ladder out of necessity. It won't make him any less my 'first born'. Now, other dog, she's a dog. She knows she is, and she's never tried to be anything but. She's good about the totem pole and shifts as necessary
My dogs have also prepared me for children in that for several years now we have not been 'carefree'. We make many decisions daily based on the needs of our dogs.
I guess my UO is that I wouldn't mind an April Fools baby (it's my EDD). I think it'd be kinda fun?
One of my childhood friends is a fools baby. No one believed her parents when she was born! They had to call back on the second to tell people they weren't making it up! With the invention of FB and picture texts it's much easier to prove these days!!

This exactly. Any comment about 4/20 in relation to an innocent baby is just really immature. Like how on the thread some husbands are joking that their wife's due date is April 20th when it's really not, and one even nicknaming their unborn baby "blaze"? What are you, 15? It's not really about the association made with the date, but all of the stupid, inevitable comments that will be made along with it.

Granted, we got much better sledding snow when I was a kid. Nowadays I don't mess with it. I guess that'll change once I have kids old enough to partake in it.
