"Friends" stole our baby name for their DOG...

I'm not sure if it's just the hormones and I'm overreacting. My husband's best friend of about 11 years, although are somewhat estranged the last 3 or so, and his wife got 2 Yorkie puppies. We chose our daughter's name publicly 3 years ago before we knew our son was a boy. Now due in April with a girl, announced her gender and same girls name in December. Monroe. On Christmas, these 2 get the puppies and name the girl Monroe. They said it's nothing personal, the wife just loved the name. Would you be pissed? They're yelling my daughter's name at their DOG!

Umm...yes! That is just weird and rude! If I were you, I would talk to your DH and see what he says, and he shoud handle it. And I'm sorry, that would make me feel so hurt.
  • My SIL did the exact thing for her cat. Took the first and middle name (and obviously last name since we are in the same family). I was pissed.
  • I'm glad it's not just me! We're not close with them like before, but still see them and our kids play together. I'm glad they've been fans of our name choice all these years, but to use it for their dog months before I'm due?! So weird!
  • It's a dog? Do you see this dog everyday? I don't have any other questions, except, you do know this is Mariah Carey's daughter's name. Did she steal the name too? (I'm not sure how old her kid is)

  • Who actually knows anything about Mariah Carey? And yes, the point would be that it's a dog. And I'm not planning to see them at all once my daughter is born

I'm full of pop culture knowledge. I think it can be somewhat helpful, and fascinating.

It's a dog. They did not steal your name. I think it's silly to think that you are the only person who can use that name. Human or animal.

  • So if you aren't planning on seeing them why do you care so much? It's a dog, and a name you chose 3 years ago. You don't own the name. I bet 90% of us on this board know someone distant or not so distant that has the same name as the one their using for this baby. Maybe they don't remember you picked your name 3 years ago... Maybe they are mad at you since technically they used the name first? Your baby's name from 3 years ago may not be at the top of the list of things for them to remember.

  • One of my very close friends just adopted a dog and named it my kids name. Kinda ticked but all I said to her was "they'll be best friends" and I did say to her that I would probably never call her dog the name. My kid will outlive her dog anyway. Oops oh well

  • I think you should name your daughter what you want to name her, regardless of what dogs are wandering around out there with the same name. Obviously, Monroe has some significance and meaning to you and DH--I doubt anyone would think you named her after a dog. Just focus on your family and the annoyance will pass. You don't even see these people anyway.

I can barely remember what people told me yesterday, never mind 3 years ago. You're overreacting.
But she publicly claimed it! PUBLICLY!
But was it Facebook official? because if it wasn't on FB than it doesn't count.

Ohhh, we need confirmation on this, it can make or break her argument ;-)

  • I think my DH took the spelling of what he wants to name this LO if it's a girl, from someone off a tv show. Should I write and ask if it's ok to use the name?!

NO, duh!!  intellectual property.  NBC will never allow it....
  • Oh noes, they liked the name you picked. Take it as a compliment and move on!

Also, if I cared what my estranged friends did with their lives, I wouldn't have time to live my own!

  • I might be irritated on a bad hormonal day. But it wouldn't deter me from using it. It's a dog so no one would care and there is no such thing as stealing a name.

  • This is the exact reason that we didn't share the names we picked.  I don't want someone else to fall in love with the names we chose and then name something the exact same thing.  If they were people that I saw all the time I would be angry.  Since they aren't close friends I'd think nasty things about them in my mind, but wouldn't really care much.
  • people name their dogs after people and after thing don't take it personal my best friend once named her dog after and exboyfriend i had which now its pretty funny..... but in a way thats "their baby" and can name it however they want, there are plenty of dogs with peoples name so don't freak out.... i wouldn't take it too personal.....

  • My SIL's brother (SIL is married to my husband's brother) got a dog a few months ago and they named the dog SIL's name. Not some name she is planning on naming a child but named the dog the same name as his sister.

Her brother does have kids, so if they liked her name so much I don't know why they wouldn't use her name on one of their children rather than her dog. She finds it insulting.

Anyway, I think what your friend did is weird, but they were also probably thinking that they weren't going to see you much either so why not go ahead and use your name on their dog.
