  • I really don't know what to say, as I have never dealt with this myself. I am deeply sorry, but I know you will love this baby no matter what the circumstances are. He is yours and you created him. Try to focus on the positive and find some more support from other mothers of DS. They will be a lot more helpful to you in most areas than we can be, but as always we will be here for love and support when you need it.

    **hugs**

  • Congrats on your baby boy. I'm glad it was not Trisomy 13 or 18. That's great news. I know finding out your child could very well have DS is hard to process. I have no experience with that. But I have no doubt that he will be such a joy and blessing to you and your DH. Hang in there!
  • I came here by accident.  I am actually a July 13 mama.  First of all congrats on your little boy.  I have a little girl with Down Syndrome.  We found out at birth so I had no time to prepare.  This is very hard news to hear.  I just wanted to say that my girl is so wonderful and amazing.  She fortunately was born with no health issues.  From my experiences with DD is to treat her just like any baby, since she is a baby and needs your care and love.  It is ok to cry, be angry, and to grieve for the child you thought you were going to have.

Local support groups can be helpful in sharing their experiences and just for support.  Also since you don't know about his heart yet (hopefully you will receive good news on this) be prepared for extra doctors appointments.  Also look into your state's programs for developmental disabilities, specifically physical therapy. (They will provide therapy and financial assistance if you qualify).  PT will help him learn and achieve milestones easier than learning on his own.  DD has been in PT since 8 weeks old. Also, this one I still struggle with, is do not compare him to other babies.  He is his own person who will learn things at his own pace and every baby is different.  He will get there eventually. Though the first time they do something new you will feel so much joy and happiness. Feel free to PM if you would like.  Congrats!!!
  •  Congrats on your little boy!

I too have no experience in this area, it seems there are some ladies on here with some great connections and advice. I just want you to know that I'm thinking of you and sending you all of the thoughts and prayers that I can.

Also, I'm hoping that you can soon tell your news to your family and be confident. Maybe the special needs board the girls mentioned can help you figure out ways to do that. The specialty boards on TB are AMAZING. The support is truly heart-warming.

  • I have nothing to offer more than what others have said.  Some ladies here have some excellent advice though: kudos to them.

My thoughts are with you; this can't be an easy time for you, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I am glad you came here by accident :) I feel so much more confident in myself as a soon to be parent to a child with Ds when I see other parents online. My genetic counselor sent me a ton of info (including info on local groups) I'm just waiting to receive it in the mail.

I have found a couple of the groups on Baby Center to be extremely helpful. They are more specific than the Special Needs board here so its a little more helpful to me at this stage.
