Atlanta Bumpies weather

Everyone safe and at home? I've been reading so many facebook statuses with crazy stories. One friend is stuck at work and her son is stuck at daycare, luckily her husband made it to the daycare but him and the baby are sleeping at daycare for the night while she's sleeping at work. Another friend spent 7 hrs on the road slipping and sliding and stuck in traffic, abandoned his car and walked an hour for what is normally an 18 min commute. It sounds super crazy out there and lots of people stuck.

Praying for all of you!!! Be safe!

  • It is so awful. I've been home all day. But I have friends who are stuck or are just getting home. I reached out to @lioness13 and I believe she just arrived. So many children are stuck at school tonight. I picked up Chloe early when they called about early release. I'm just hoping everyone makes it in safe and stays warm tonight.

I just don't understand how the city didn't properly plan. It is embarrassing.

  • Prayers for a friend who isn't home yet. Her husband posted on Facebook saying he last heard from her at 11 pm when she borrowed a phone to call him and tell him her phone was dead and she was pretty stuck but thought she could make it home. Still not home this morning and no news from her. I think lots of people had to sleep in their cars so hopefully she hunkered down, managed to stay warm, and stay safe in her car.

  • Numbersgirl, two weeks ago they closed everything bc of crazy low temps. The city caught so much flack for doing that. So this time they didn't shut down in time. Northerners may laugh but this is why this happens. It is too far and between and the city isn't prepared. The temps keep dropping and it doesn't seem like it will be better anytime soon. I'm praying everyone who is still stuck is safe. The girls and I haven't left the house since 1:00 yesterday when I went to pick up Chloe. It is a disaster out there.
  • I live two hours north of ATL and it's a mad house here in Chattanooga. Prayers that everyone got through the night okay. So glad I don't have to leave my house.

Oh my :(  I hope you hear good news soon.  The whole thing sounds awful :(  I just read a post on the CSFTLs FB page from a woman involved in a fatal crash because of that storm.  She's ok but two people passed away.  So sad and I hope all our bumpies are safe.

  • Well, we've heard from my friend.  She hasn't moved since 11 last night and still isn't moving so she slept in her car on the interstate.  Luckily she had blankets and snacks in her car so she's fine but no idea when she'll get home.

  • If you want to see just how much ATL can't cope with this check out Google maps traffic view of Atlanta. Crazy. A while lot of folks must still be stuck.

  • @sctiger and @jancandance, as a northerner I am certainly not laughing. I hope that the mess gets sorted out and everyone makes it through the storm safely. I think what most of us "northerners" were questioning is how exactly such a mess occurred because we are so used to being prepared. Sometimes we need to be reminded that others don't deal with this on a regular basis. That being said, I'm surprised that there isn't a better plan in place for situations like this. Growing up, my dad owned a road maintenance company. A lot of our equipment served a double duty and was also used for summer projects. I'm sure that with a little more proactive planning something different could be done so that it wasn't so dangerous when weather like this does hit.

  • @sctiger, I didn't mean that your comment was specifically directed at me, or anyone on this board. But I know in guilty of the same sort of thinking occasionally simply because winter driving is such a normal part of my life. Sometimes I need to be reminded of the exact things you guys are saying :)

  • We're about 2 hours from Atlanta (in Alabama) and things are insane.  Pretty much everything is shut down.  Lots of people stranded a couple of hours north in Birmingham, and cars left all over the roads.  We're safe at home with our kiddos though!

I just had a snark off with some asshole in the cafeteria about this.  They were showing all the crashes and traffic on the tv in the cafe and this jerk starts ranting (to no one, mind you) "Christ, two inches of snow and everyone has a breakdown over it!  Come on!  Two thirds of the country deals with that on a regular basis!"  I turned and leveled my eyes at him and said "That's actually the point.  They're used to it."  He wouldn't let it die "Yeah but two damn inches isn't enough to cause accidents."  I told him that people that can't swim can drown in water they can stand in so yes, it's definitely enough to cause problems when you AREN'T USED TO IT.  What the fuck is wrong with people?
Yeah, it isn't the snow though.  It's the ice.  Atlanta had an inch of ice layered over all their roads.

  • Lily and I are good, but H still hasn't made it home from work.  He works as an ER nurse.  He couldn't leave last night after his shift, so he worked until 2am and slept there.  Then they woke him up at 6am and he has been working since because people called out.  I sure hope he makes it home tonight.  I didn't have to go to work because they closed the college today.

  • Here's a good explanation:

And this is the part that most northerners don't get: "Now that melted snow is refreezing under the tires of all of these stacked motorists. Those tires manage to melt a little of the top layer, but it freezes right back quickly. The result is a particularly Southern phenomena that looks and feels like cold glass."

I've seen and experienced Atlanta iced over a few years ago - luckily that time it happened at night, so everyone woke up and stayed home.  But it is literally a thick layer of ice - it's like driving on an ice skating rink.  And I'm not sure any snow plows/ice trucks/etc could really make a huge difference.

Im in Atlanta and it is terrible. I was able to get to daycare and get A but traffic was horrible. I went a route and got stranded and detoured 3 times. Two different times I had to have help of strangers to push my suv around bc it kept swerving and spinning all over. I was in panic but finally made it to a main road. My husband who was driving miles behind us abandoned his truck and walked 3 miles to get to us since we were ahead. 11 HOURS later we made it to a friends house, thank God. We would have never made it home. We waited the day out today and let the snow meltdown some and made the journey home to our furbabies that were stranded in our home. 26 hours later from the time we left home yesterday, we made it home in one piece and no vehicle damage. LO was a trooper and only got fussy for a few minutes. Please pray for all those that are still stranded out there.

P.s.I have never been so glad to see my medela pump this afternoon....had not pumped in over 16 hrs and tried to nurse and LO kept bitting me and smiling.

  • @zigspective He finally made it home at 4pm. They almost didn't let him come home. I thank God he did!
