Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Picky eater

My dd will be a year old in 2 weeks. She used to eat great but is all of a sudden picky. She's going through a independent stage and won't let me spoon feed her anything so I have to make stuff she can pick up. I tried spaghetti with butter chicken and cheese last night but she only ate a small amount. Anyone else's lo go through this? Any meal ideas that worked for you?

Re: Picky eater

  • Do you give her raw veggies already?  That's what I've been doing with DD lately.  She's still eating her purees (10 months on Saturday) but whenever I'm eating anything she stares me down like I'm depriving her of the last meal of her life.  The last 2 nights I gave her a red bell pepper strip, a celery stick, a baby carrot and a cucumber stick (can you tell I'm trying to eat healthy).  I even let her try the hummus I was having.  I've seen a lot of posts about Baby Led Weaning and it sounds like people just give LO whatever they're having.  Tonight I'm making myself salmon and I'll probably let DD try some and just watch for any sort of reaction.  Good luck!!

  • She can pretty much eat anything at this point except for really hard things (think raw carrots and nuts) and honey.  String cheese is good, quesadillas or sandwiches, pasta, steamed veggies, cut fruit, any meat you made for dinner.  The possibilities are endless :)

  • She only eats table food now but she refuses a lot of it now. Maybe it's just her being stubborn. Sometimes she will sit there and stare at her food and cry and them when I pick her up and feed her with my fingers she will eat it.
  • Babies won't starve themselves so just keep offering healthy foods and she will eventually start eating it all again.  I think this is the point that picky eaters become life long picky eaters...if you panic and start giving the one or two foods she likes best at each meal then she will learn that she gets those foods if she holds out.  If you keep offering foods as normal and let her decide how much of it to eat at that sitting she will learn to eat from what she is offered and will eventually resume eating a large variety of foods.
