I just wanted to check on the southern bumpies. Is everyone doing OK and handling the snow and ice? I see a lot of coverage of ATL on the news and how gridlocked it has been. I hope all family members made it home safe.
I was at work in Marietta yesterday. My normal 40 minute commute took 2 hours. I'm thankful I have AWD and experience driving in this weather. Many students were stuck at school and I saw many cars off the road on my way home. It's awful how unprepared the south is. I've been looking at a Facebook page "snowedoutinaltanta" and I was in tears.
I think it's absolutely crazy that cities and states are that unprepared. I mean I understand that it's rare for them to get snow and ice but you would think they would have some stuff on hand! I hope all you ladies are safe down there and I will no longer be complaining about snow removal in my city!!
@MissMusic I am glad your H was able to get a hotel room and he makes it home soon. Hearing about the stranded kids broke my heart. I know that I would be flipping out if LO was stuck. I hope that the kids are making it home @grimesk12 I am glad you were able to make it home even if it took longer than usual. My work closed early yesterday so I was able to leave and beat the bad weather. I was scared I was going to be stuck in south GA on one of the rural roads.
I was just reading that a traffic cop delivered a baby in the backseat of a car in the Atlanta gridlock yesterday. He barely made it. Could you imagine how terrified that poor mother was (and cop too I'm sure!) ?
@bellaxanthe I was thinking the same thing but I think part of its ice and the other part is that we are used to driving in this kind of weather. We know how to brake & how to deal with skidding on the roads. People in the south just don't know how to drive on these kinds of roads because they never have before.
I'm having a hard time generating a response to this thread for some reason.
First - I second the hope that all affected Bumpies are safe and sound and with their loved ones. @MissMusic - I'm glad your DH was able to find a safe spot and I'm sorry his boss is apparently an idiot.
Back to why I'm having difficulty with this thread - It's more complicated than just "govt should be prepared" or "people don't know how to drive". It's a lot of factors which come into play. And there's criticism no matter what response is put into play. Even right now - there simultaneously exists (not necessarily here on J12, but in general) criticism and derision for the South for not having better precautions and response plans and countless mocking threads/memes/whatever regarding the "closure" of the South due to cold.

I completely agree. In the south we just do not know how to deal with ice and snow because it is so rare here. I grew up in the south and have never driven in snow! Plus we do not salt our roads or do any type of preparation for a storm like this. @bellaxanthe I do not think you were belittling the situation at all. For northerners this would be no big deal and just another winter storm but for us not so much because it is out of the norm for our area.
Some of the mechanics at play in Atlanta aren't about the ice/snow at all (although that complicates it). It's purely the outcome of attempting to move waaay too many people in too short a time. Similar to the Hurricane Rita traffic jams in 2005 (which killed significantly more people than the storm did).
As a northerner living in GA I can tell you that most of my co-workers (teachers) admitted to me that they were scared because they had never had to drive in snow/ice before. I tried to give everyone some helpful advice as I've had years of driving in bad weather but my drive home last night was even scary for me. I've seen more compassion and kindness in the last day and today than I've seen since I moved to GA. Stephanie- you are awesome for opening your house to people in need! MM- I hope DH makes it home safely! McKinky- I'm glad you're safe and I agree with what you said.
We got about 2 inches here. Every school, daycare and college is closed along with some other buildings. It was reported there was around 790 accidents just in Atlanta yesterday.
No one put salt down in our condo complex so the roads are terrible and you can't even get out. Everyone is just staying put. Most places are too icy to drive unless you know how to drive in the snow well.
My heart goes out to all of those who are stuck on the road or in the house,it sounds like a nightmare. Living up in the Great White North I am used to this type of weather and we are more prepared, and there are still some days were we get 5 inches of snow and it could take me 2 hours to get home, I cannot image how bad it is with 2 inches and not being prepared. Hope everyone stays safe.
