SS having a minor freakout -- updated in comments

Luna CLuna C member
edited January 2014 in June 2014 Moms

I was so sad after reading about some of our recent losses here on the board and kept telling myself I just have to get through to my a/s tomorrow -- and now today I can't feel the baby moving at all. (I felt a few things here and there but it's lighter and not as obviously baby as it had seemed just a day or two ago.)

I'm totally freaking out that something is wrong. Please tell me I'm being silly and overemotional. If it was really something bad happening, I'd have other symptoms, right? (I feel totally fine and normal otherwise.) And it's normal for movement to come and go at this stage?

I feel stupid calling my doctor but I'm worried sick. :(

  • From what I hear it is normal to feel movement more often on some days than others. I know it is easier said than done, but try not to worry. I hope your a/s tomorrow will put you at ease.

  • I don't feel movement on a consistent basis at 19 weeks. Somedays he's really active and others he isn't. I know how it feels when mommy brain goes crazy, so if you need to call the doc to ease your mind than I say go for it. But hopefully you'll get some reassurance here :)

    I'm being paranoid, right?

  • I am the same way. Everything was fine at my A/S but sometimes she just doesn't move very much and I worry! The other day she wasn't moving at all, all day. I was freaking out. When she finally moved that night I almost cried.

  • I think being 'paranoid' is normal. Sometimes when I don't feel movement I can convince myself everything is ok when I see him moving from one side to the other. If I lie on my left, he'll move to the right. If I lie on my right, he'll move to the left.

  • 21 weeks here and still not feeling consistent movement :) We had our a/s last week and all was well, she was moving around like crazy and I still didn't feel a thing. I had a few days in a row feeling lots of movement, and then yesterday today nothing. It's normal, try not to stress!
  • Consistent movement isn't expected until 24 weeks. Try drinking a soda. If your doc is like mine, I can run in for a heartbeat check whenever.

Baby might just be resting :) Junior had a case of the Mundays yesterday and wasn't really active so I would see how the rest of the day goes.
  • I felt baby one day last week, and then on Sunday, but not since.  It drives me a little crazy but I'm pretty sure it is normal to not feel consistent movement... I think until you're closer to 25 weeks (though some might feel it earlier).

I was at the Dr's office a few weeks ago at about 18 weeks (before feeling movement) and asked when I should expect to start... he said not for at least 4-6 weeks.  I've been thinking anything before then is a bonus.

Try not to worry... I know it is easier said than done.  You get to see the babes tomorrow anyway!

Also, fwiw, for some reason, I have been fine, fine, fine, and then the day before an US or Dr's appointment, I get really scared and overwhelmed with the "What-if's".

I tried a diet coke -- that always results in a rugby match in my tummy ... today, I got a few little tingles that I couldn't even be sure were baby.
    :(

I know I just need to chill out. It's so hard. I've never been so anxiety prone as I have been since I got my BFP.

  • I'm almost 21 weeks and still don't feel real consistent movement, and usually it's while I'm laying on my back at night.  Also keep in mind, babies are mostly asleep in the womb too, so if they aren't moving noticeably, they could just be asleep.
  • Another thing that gets mine kicking is when DH drapes his arm across my stomach or my little dog lays on it. I think it's the heat and pressure. Maybe put a thin towel over you and a laptop on it just so baby can feel pressure and warmth. Hopefully, that'll annoy baby just enough to give you a big kick telling you to knock it off.
  • Call your doc just to be on the safe side. It is not irrational at all. Yes baby's movements are not quite as pronounced and not consistent. I mentioned him not moving a lot yesterday (he was quiet for his usual antics) and when we got the u/s there he was but just sleepy I guess. (I get u/s every week until yesterday and then every two weeks unless I want them weekly still.)

Point of this post is call for your peace of mind. Even if it seems silly or paranoid, they are used to it. Believe me. Hope baby is just being quiet today.

  • I hope it's just nothing and would venture to say that it's likely normal as PPs have already said. I had a ton of movement all day long yesterday and only a light thump or two today. Even the OJ trick didn't do anything. If you already have an appt scheduled for tomorrow I would just wait it out, but if you are truly concerned, give them a call. At the very least, your doc can give you some peace of mind. :)

  • Yes to all of the above! I've been feeling like a crazy person the last 24 hours! I have been feeling her consistently throughout the day for the last week .. And since yesterday afternoon not much at all. And when I have felt something it also wasn't a definitive kick so I've been second guessing myself.

I'm glad I'm not alone! These babies need to start moving so we're not all going nuts.

  • With the amount of money those docs get paid, they can handle a few phone calls from us crazy pregnant ladies!
  • That baby is resting and working hard on growing! Try not to worry:)
  • Hugs to everyone - my PGAL brain has been in overdrive after this week's events too.  I haven't commented much because i just don't know what to say that hasn't already been said and/or been afraid that i would say the wrong thing.

I finally had to tell DH so he could remind me to relax from time to time.  I too slept with my hand on my belly as others did last night and cried as i read some of the posts.

Thank you to everyone here has been supportive of the regulars with both the good and the bad news.

  • Laying on my back for about 10 minutes always seems to get my baby going. It's like she's telling me to get up and do something. ;)
  • We're all a little crazy sometimes. Glad you got some moves :)
  • So glad to hear your LO is moving around, and I agree with SNLT. The docs get paid for a reason, call if you're too concerned.

  • I had something like that with DS.  He was a champion kicker, roller, mover, belly morpher!  One day (I don't remember how far along I was, but farther then now) he barely moved.  I freaked, and called the Dr.  It was after hours so he called me back and told me it was totally fine and normal that one day would be quiet in there.
It sometimes depends on how much you move around because when you walk around a lot, it sorta rocks them to sleep.
If it makes you feel better, totally call the Dr.  They get calls like this lots, and that's what they're there for.  :)  good luck momma!

  • I did not feel movement on a consistent basis until week 22-23.  Your A/S is going to be just fine!  Hang in there!

  • I'm glad you got LO to move for you after poking :). I had a nightmare of bleeding last week and woke up freaking because I couldn't feel him moving. The little guy was just sleeping and the kicks returned in the morning. I think everyone is extra nervous and scared, I don't think there is much to change that other than time. ((Hugs)) to those who need them, I know I could use one :)

If your baby has moved into a position were you can't feel kicks you could try doing some cat cows to see if that moves LO more to the front of your belly so you can feel movement better. Everything is probably fine but I totally understand your worries.

I am all over this once I get home. S/he is still not moving as much as normal, so of course I am not all at ease. But I did go from full panic to half-panic.

I wish I could have a drink. Ugh.

  • Glad you were able to get some movement after poking around a bit. Try to relax and hang in there, which is much easier said than done.

I freak out when I start to wonder when the last time I felt him move was. I'm always on edge. I think right now my PGAL brain and recurrent memories of my sons premature birth are making me very on edge and nervous.

  • I don't feel regular movement.  I think this is a combination of it still being early and being a FTM, so maybe not always recognizing it.  I have noticed that I don't generally feel anything unless I'm holding very still.  Music is the only thing that reliably gets him/her moving.

After the past few days we all are probably feeling extra nervous.  Last night I had the granddaddy of all nightmares.  I won't repeat it here because you all don't need that, but I've never in my life been so glad to wake up (even during it I started trying to wake myself and couldn't).  My A/S is today.  Thank God.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I feel the same way - have been very nervous and sad with all the terrible losses lately and the lack of movement I've been feeling. My a/s is Friday morning and it will be the doesn't time I have seen baby since 9 weeks.

  • This may not be helpful ...

I am 21 wks tomorrow. I have felt the baby kick for the past 4 weeks at least twice a day. And it is FULL ON boxing matches when I ingest anything strawberry. For the past 3 days I have not felt any movement. I am eating strawberries and drinking cokes and still nothing. I started freaking out when I tried pressing really hard against my tummy and "force" movement and nothing. I just called my DR and told her about it and that I wasn't sure if it is me being paranoid or if it is serious. She told me to come in to check it out. She told me she would feel better knowing it is nothing then thinking it is nothing and it turns into something serious.

I am hoping it is nothing but will let you girls know what she says.

I suffered a loss early last year and when reading all the posts lately of the loses, my heart is literally broken. I am devastated for those dealing this loss this late. I am not sure if we are on edge because of the loses or what. I just wanted to let you guys know I have lurked here since the beginning and this board comforts me so much! Thank you ladies for being outrageous and loving  :)  And the GIFS ... they make my day!!

  • As your due date twin, I can tell you I go days without feeling anything still, and then I'll have a day with a lot of movement, and then a couple without. It's still very normal for it to be coming and going.

For what it's worth all it takes for me is a couple of sips of merlot or an IPA and LO is kicking up a storm. Worth a try!

I have felt baby pretty regularly for the past few weeks and then this past weekend- silence. I felt very few rumblings for a good day and a half and couldn't tell if they were regular stomach movement or the baby. I was totally freaked so I don't think you're a SS at all. I also thought about calling the dr. But on the second day she started moving around in there. I've heard it's pretty normal for our stage (I'm 21 weeks) but I was internally panicking and thought about posting the same type of question. So maybe that makes you feel a little better- maybe LO is just sleepy or switched positions so you can't feel as much?

But I completely agree with PPs- call the dr if you're still worried. They are supposed to be there for us for anything.

Also- I'm glad to see you back Steph. You would be missed until June and beyond if you hadn't.

    ETA- words are hard.
  • I pretty much always freak out before an ultrasound and convince myself that she's not moving and something's wrong.

But as others have said, TOTALLY NORMAL to have quiet days at 20 weeks. I had a week at 19 weeks that was SUPER quiet. Also, right before my AS. Baby is totes fine and now rumbling all the time.
