So this whole "science baby has no soul" thing....

Is being taught in my school.  Granted I work in private school and I get the whole religious belief thing, but seriously?

A group of girls was sitting with me during lunch and I thought you ladies would enjoy a snippet of our conversation.

Me: How's life?

Student 1: Oh we're learning untrue "facts" in theology.

Me: Huh?

Student 1: Yeah.  They're teaching us morality and about the rhythm method because, you know, birth control kills babies.  So according to Miss so-n-so, all women are on a 28 day cycle which is clearly wrong because I'm on like, a 38 day cycle so I must be a freak.

Student 2: Oh yeah.  And she also told us that babies conceived through IVF or artificial insemination have no souls and all grow up to have psychological problems.  My cousins are IVF babies and they have no psychological problems so yeah...we're learning crap.

Student 3: The whole class is just crazy.  I'm an IVF baby and I'm really offended.

Me: Why don't you talk to the teacher about it?

Student 3: Because she already said I have no soul so she'll probably think my feelings are [I forget exactly how she worded this, but something having to do with being put there by the devil]

And here I was, wondering where some of these crazies that grace TB were getting this shit from.  Well, now I know.

Me and my science baby are pretty pissed.

  • Does this apply to IUI babies too?!?

I love the girls' opinions and independent thinking. I'm scared to think what my kids will learn in school!

Yes.  I asked.  The reason for this is because the semen is collected in an impure way - apparently the Bible frowns upon masturbation.

  • This is devastating. On a brighter note I am impressed by your students for holding into their thoughts and opinions and thinking critically. Ppl are crazy.
Me too - I love these girls (my hormonal self has already cried with them over the fact that they're graduating in June and I'm going to miss the crap out of them).

But I worry about the kids who DON'T think critically.  This particular teacher is young and very involved in school life.  I wonder how many kids look up to her and take what she says seriously...I know how impressionable some of them are.  That's scary.
  • This! This is why I will not be sending my child to a private religous school!

But then do babies conceived from rape and/or incest have souls? Was the semen pure enough in those instances?

  • See this is where I get confused. Is life amazing and sacred and we should done everything we can to preserve/create (so no end of life rights but yea IVF!) or is it naturally sanctioned by God as he sees fit (boo IVF, boo sciencey medicines!)

  • I am really saddened by this post. I would think that in the year 2014 such ignorance would not exist, but I guess I am dreaming with my eyes open. What a terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE thing to say or to think. I am literally speechless. I wish I had a nice witty statement or comeback but I have nothing. I have many friends who turned to IUI and IVF. I was almost one of them. After a year of TTC with no ovulation and crazy cycles, we finally got pregnant (started ovulating 2- 2 1/2 weeks later than I "technically" should have... story for another day). We went through so much stress, sadness, testing, aggravation, so many emotions and sleepness nights. It was awful and I am one of the lucky ones where things in my body just suddenly clicked. I have two good friends who are not so lucky and have beginning the process of IUI, one who is actually so "messed up" for lack of a better term, that they are jumping right to IVF. These two women are the most deserving people I have ever met. If anyone should have children it should be these couples. So to say that their future children have no souls makes me sick.

Yup and yup.  I can't make sense of crazy.
  • Ugh.  I agree @mimaloo- the real concern is for the students who DON'T think for themselves and take the word of any adult as gospel.  I do respect the institution of religious education, although I didn't receive one, and accept that religious teachings are acceptable there in a context that would shock the hell out of us public school teachers... but there has to be fine line between religious education and indoctrination with inaccuracies.

    Wow.

do they teach them that Jesus rode around on a dinosaur too?

the bright side of this post is that "beliefs" like this are quickly going to become a thing of the past, because kids these days have access to real information in the palm of their hands all the time, and most of them are starting to know better than to buy this utter garbage.

this is also why i want my kids to go to public school.

You're obviously not in Texas, where the Board of Education keeps trying to mandate that creationism be taught in Science class.  I'm thinking private school may be our best hope for avoiding the type of crackpots OP is dealing with!

I have actually heard of some couples using a special condom so that they can still collect the semen via sex.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • Wow. Way to alienate the very children they are supposed to be teaching. I'm glad that they have the insight to not just accept what they're told. And each and ever baby is amazing, science or not.
  • Wow. What ignorance. Glad these girls have a brain to think for themselves, but it makes me scared to think maybe some of those kids actually believe the load of crap they are feeding them.

  • Good for those students for questioning the crap that is coming out of that class.

However, I feel like this is NOT normal private school teachings.

I went to Catholic school and yes, while they preach abstinence, we still learned about birth control and were never told it would kill babies or any of the other information this obviously psycho teacher is spewing. I'd report her.

  • Wow. Good job for those girls for knowing better.

  • Fyi- not all Catholic schools are created or taught equally. My DD goes to a Catholic school- so did I and so did DH. This is NOT what they teach in sex ed. I've actually talked to the present teacher to see what they're teaching now, and they're pretty mainstream. The OP's school's teachings are so obnoxiously conservative that I'm wondering what kind of school it is.

No it's definitely not.  This is just one looney toon.

  • The good news is that these girls are smart enough to know that is a bunch of crap. The bad news is that I'm sure they have some classmates that are believing this teacher. I know it's private school, but if I were the parent of the IVF baby, I would call and complain.
  • If you want millennial kids to believe you about serious things, lying about things that are easy to fact check on a smart phone isn't a good way to build trust.

As an intelligent woman who loves science and theology stories like this embarrass me as a follower of Christ.
  • I'm glad the girls you talked to are able to see through that BS, it just worries me about the kids who aren't seeing through it. There's gotta be some of them buying into that crap. It's just so sad.

This reminds me of that one cray poster who thought her baby "made out of love" was more special than her SIL's conceived via IVF. Maybe this is the kind of teaching ahe received in school.
  • @Mimaloo Me and my two soulless, science babies are pissed, too!  (former scientist over here)

I would agree that this is a problem with the teacher and not necessarily the school.  If it was me, I'd probably talk to the administration about it.  See if they agreed with her teaching philosophy about devil science babies.  If they did, I'd probably be looking for a new job.

Glad to hear that those girls were smart enough to make up their minds on their own, though.  That's probably due to some good parenting and a strong, loving mommy influence. :)

Sadly for the type of cray cray who's on the soulless babies train- even that's not enough. Babies need to be created in the marriage bed only with no intervention from third parties to "count".

Luckily most people who don't believe in intervention aren't even that crazy and just feel that its against the proper order of things, but don't judge the child. (Judging the parents is fine though) and honestly from my experience the vast majority of the public has zero opinion on the moral value of infertility treatment. Opinions on its worth, opinions about if they'd ever do it- sure. But it's surprisingly rare to find people who believe that it is morally wrong.

And in my experience, a good portion of those who do feel its morally wrong, when confronted by living examples- know to keep their mouths shut as its not an easy argument to convince people of.

I've only ever felt the need to justify our choice to do IVF to one person I'd consider a friend. And we had a long talk about religion and the meaning of love and souls that was enlightening for both of us. Even if we both walked away with opinions unchanged- we both understood where the other was coming from without anger. And he won't judge me or my child- that's (in my friends very reasonable opinion) God's job- not his.

  • I agree with all the posters who said don't judge all religious schools on this crazy teacher. I live on Ireland and most schools are faith schools and we were taught about evolution and contraception and all the rest of it. It is NOT a belief of any faith I've ever heard of that babies conceived this way have no souls. Either thus is some crazy new religion or the teacher is literally making stuff up. The general ethos we were taught about sex was "don't have sex until you are totally ready, you know the guy loves and respects you, and always use a condom" I left with the vague idea that sex without a condom was more of a sin than sex with a condom!

I'm also worried that kids who aren't as smart as those two girls will take it upon themselves to use the rhythm method instead of real birth control. For teenagers with irregular cycles, and who can pass around STDs, this is so dangerous! I'm sure they are being taught that premarital sex is wrong and not to do it at all, but that has never stopped teens from getting it in anyway.

So glad to hear these students are not blindly accepting the bs doctrine being fed to them in this class.

I went to Catholic school and this was not part of my sex ed (7th grade) course.  Mostly, we learned about menstruation from a female science teacher who was clearly uncomfortable even discussing that...that was a long time ago, though.  She never even mentioned birth control.  Sex ed as a freshman in a public high school involved watching a gym teacher/tennis coach put a condom on a banana.

  • I went to a private Christian high school and they did not teach stuff like this.. It makes me mad when all religious schools get lumped together as "crazy" because of teachers like this. My school was great, and I am hoping to be able to send my kids there one day. So please don't judge all religious schools on stories like this, we were not taught like this!

I have to agree with this.  I went to Catholic school and we learned the ins and outs of reproduction the right way.  I might be remembering wrong, but I'm pretty sure we learned about birth control too.

I guess I'm glad this wasn't someone calling themselves a science teacher.  That would make this appaling situation even worse.

There are def a lot of schools that are great, but I fear the crazy teachers that seem to come out of the wood work. What this teacher said was probably not in a textbook or in the curiculum so a parent could not look it over and see instantly that the teacher is attempting to brain wash their child.

I would love to send my child to a private school eventually, but def would be doing tons of research about the school before enrolling.
