Anyone plan on extended BF?

Before I was pregnant I just 'assumed' I would stop at 1 because I have to go back to work.

Anyways now I really want to BF past 1 mainly to help with the transition to me being with him full time to me working full time!

I've only known a couple people IRL that have BF past 1 so I was looking for some online 'support' I guess?

My IL's think it is creepy to BF a toddler so I know i will have a battle ahead of me.

Re: Anyone plan on extended BF?

  • I am. My family thinks it wierd as well, but my baby, my choice. My hubby supports me and that's all that matters. My goal was always at least a year, preferably 2 though and maybe even a bit longer. Around 18 months though I do plan on cutting him down to nursing only in the morning, and before naps and bed time.

  • LO has MSPI so right now the plan is BFing past 1 so I can gradually introduce foods back to her. It weirds my husband out a little.

  • Glad to hear I'm not alone.  I will have to get him down to only BF while I'm home though because I don't plan on bringing a pump with me to work!

Does anyone plan on pumping past 1? Do we have rules for that in Canada?

  • I will pump past one that way when I cut him back around 18 months he can still have breast milk in a sippy cup instead of cows milk during the day. Another reason is because I donate milk as well. That said though it will also depend on my supply when I get to that point that overall decides if I continue pumping or not.

  • I plan to do the same as Riansmommie. I really love breastfeeding. Pumping...not so much. I think my plan is to pump once or twice a day just to give her breastmilk in a sippy. By 18 months, I'd like to only nurse at bedtime and in the morning. I'll let her wean herself when she's ready, unless my supply tanks.

  • We definitely plan on bfing after 1. Our situation is very similar to @riansmommie. My husband and I have decided that is what's best for our family. I'm also going to follow Js lead. We have little support from our families (they think I should be feeding him way more solids and bfing less...) but I do have a wonderful lactation consultant (she actually helped deliver J as she is also an l&d nurse) and she is very supportive.
  • @Jillsee I hear you on the more solids thing!!! I feel like my IL's would cram him with food until he threw up.

  • My Mom nursed me until 18 months, my sister until 2 and my brother until 3! So I know her and my Dad are supportive, it's my husbands family who never BF that will be the issue!

  • So frustrating! It's like my word, my pedi's, the world health org, pediatrics association.... We're all wrong, he really needs solids all day :/
  • I probly will, have t exactly come up with a time line yet tho

  • I'm planning to keep nursing after 12 months.  Right now, the idea of stopping sounds 10 times harder than continuing.  Pumping I could live without, though.
  • I planned to BF until somewhere between 12-18 months, but I might go longer. Just seeing how ready she is to wean.

  • I plan to stop pumping at a year (though I could see continuing until LO transitions into the toddler room at daycare maybe), but nursing on demand when I'm with LO until whenever really. We do want another baby relatively close in age, so I might have to partially or fully wean before LO is ready just to get AF back.

  • I exclusively pumped as I did with ds1. I stopped pumping once I dried out and that was around 17 months. By that time he was drinking and loving cows milk. I plan on doing the same with ds2.

  • I plan on bfing until she self weans. I probably won't go past age 3 though. I was breastfed until age 3 and my family really supports breastfeeding... Even my dad, which is kinda weird if you knew my dad... But my h's mom formula fed so I think she might be a little weirded out. H is not super supportive of bfing but he understands it is important to me so he doesn't try to stop me. I might also pump to have breastmilk in a sippy but I get next to nothing pumping right now so we'll see. I've been downing mothers milk tea to try to get a better pump output.

  • @melOHdy I'd been meaning to post this and that other post reminded me!

Honestly I'm just as curious as you are!

I was thinking/hoping to wean him to just BF in the morning, when I get home from work and before bed.  I'm in Canada so I have a year mat leave and I never had to pump (thank God) so I hope to slowly wean him to just those 3 BF per day and then slowly cut that back to 2 and let him self wean from there!

I have NO idea if it will actually work out like that, but that is the plan in my head!

  • Ds1 weaned at about 13 months but I would go longer this time if Arlo wants to. As for weaning to milk, the extended bf'ers I know all just nurse usually morning and evening and do milk during the day. I for sure plan on stopping pumping by 12 months! I introduced ds1 to whole milk around 11 months while I was still nursing twice a day so when we stopped nursing it wasn't a huge jump.

  • I don't think I'll try to wean any earlier than 18 months. If he weans himself, that's fine. I'm hoping to be done by the time he's two, because, if all goes according to plan I'll have a new baby! I don't think I want to try tandem nursing.

That is the plan here. DS1 nursed until 27 months. I pumped for him until he was 18 months. I hope to quit pumping a bit earlier this time but will likely nurse until sometime after 2.

I let DS1 nurse on demand until 18 months. Then I had to nightwean him for my sanity. He continued to nurse at least 6 times a day until he was almost 2. Then he cut back to morning, nap, and night. When he was down to just before bed I weaned him because he had a crappy latch and it was not working for either of us. Instead we rocked and snuggled for a bit before bed and he was just as happy.

Were you working is that why you were pumping? How often were you pumping?  I've been wondering if I will have to pump when I go back to work when he is 1.  I really hoped not.

I do work full time hence the pumping. I had to go back at 12 weeks with both boys. I always pump 4 times at work since they take 4 bottles at daycare. My body seems to produce a bottle worth every 2 hours.

DS1 gave up bottles at 15 months so I was able to pump less often or for a shorter time then. He wasn't a huge fan of breast milk in a cup either. I honestly pumped so long because he preferred nursing to solids until he hit 15 months. He still nursed like a baby until closer to 18 months. He would have been latched on 24/7 if I would allow it.
  • I think I will go a couple of months past a year but not much more. I'm also hoping it will make the transition easier when I go back to work, but only plan on nursing once or twice a day at that point. I am already a little worried about the logistics as I would probably need to wake her to nurse before I go to work in the morning, DH will not be a fan if that since it means he will need to get up also.

  • I will do nighttime, morning, and weekend nursing sessions as long as LO wants. I have a crazy freezer stash so LO can continue to get BM bottles for months after I stop pumping as long as I continue to rotate through and keep it fresh.

  • My goal is to allow her to self-wean. Our family support of nursing is already dying a painful death. Apparently I'm making people uncomfortable. Psh whatever. My mom FF us, and flat out told us at my sister's baby shower that she "could never have given up that much of her freedom" to breastfeed. My MIL BF hubs til 3 months, she didn't like it AT ALL so she didn't BF SIL. She thinks it's great that I chose to BF but doesn't get why we're still going. Eh, I'll stop when A is ready and wants to.
In regards to how that relates to DCP, I need to talk to them, but I plan on providing a sippy with BM for her snacks and lunches (they provide food) once she moves up to the "Explorer" room (next step after the "nursery").

A bottle a session! I am so jealous.

  • I plan to stop pumping and wean myself from it gradually starting around 11 months. I would still like to nurse before bedtime and maybe in the morning. I am not sure how long. Maybe she will self wean. I haven't discussed it with DH. I'm sure he won't really care and will support me with whatever I want to do.

  • I nursed DD until she was 3; I got flamed for it on The Nest :) I had intended to nurse her until she was done but when she turned three I realized *I* was done. I plan on letting DS self-wean but I guess we'll see how long it takes before he picks that. Talking about it beforehand, DH didn't like it but when I was actually nursing her he didn't seem to mind it. I didn't originally intend to go that long (yanno, when I was pregnant and knew nothing about having an outside baby) but as time went on I realized it was the best thing for both DD and I to continue our nursing relationship.

You got flamed for it????? That makes me sad.

I would ideally like to let him wean but I don't think I could do until 3, I would like to have a second by then and I don't think I want to tandem nurse.

I did get flamed for it! I posted on EFF about how I was sad to wean before she wanted me to and someone from 1st tri or some other board that cleeeearly knew what they were talking about XPd it a couple of places. I didn't even bother to read the flaming- they weren't going to change my mind and I would just provide fodder for them. I posted something neutral like "wow, didn't expect this, have a good day."

I don't blame you for not wanting to tandem nurse. I always wondered how that worked with the type of milk you produce and how the body does that for the different ages. Super cool though! I've read that nursing while pregnant is exhausting too, so more power to people who do that!

  • My girlfriend is nursing while pregnant and originally didn't plan on tandem nursing but now thinks she will to help with the transition of her daughter having a sibling.

Who knows I may do it but it is not my plan right now!

  • I'd like to let DS self wean, but we want to start trying for #2 next summer and I might have to wean him just to get AF back. I won't wean him before a year if I don't have to. If AF shows up w/o having to wean I'll happily go 18+ months (not interested in tandem nursing though) I absolutely love BFing and DS loves it too. He would be on 24/7 if I let him. I call him my little booby boy LOL I would like to stop pumping at work at 12-15 months though. I don't really have a set timeline.
