Infant Gas...Help!

So my poor squishy LO has awful gas. Not associated with a lot of throwing up, usually just if he eats too much or too quickly. I don't *think* it's colic but it's definitely more than normal.

He fusses almost constantly and then cries when he really has to fart.

We have tried:
Gas drops (every 2 hours)
Bicycle legs and every other kind of legs.
Burping (though he doesn't burp much no matter how hard we try)

DH is going to get some gripe water now.

He is getting breast milk exclusively, through dr browns bottles with preemie nipples.

I've spent hours on google, now looking for some STM magic tricks.

Help, he's breaking my heart and hasn't really slept since 5am (yay).

  • My DS was a preemie and when he came home and started exclusively breast feeding we had the same issues. I followed this video and used the almond oil for the massage. It helped a lot. Good luck! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7akZb16ZGsU&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D7akZb16ZGsU

  • I should have added that we did call the pedi. She says it's normal and we can try the gripe water in addition to the drops. But I'm giving it one more day and if it doesn't improve I'm going to take him in.

  • I would put in a call to the pediatrician. Gas drops worked for us, but if nothing is working, he might have acid reflux. Not being at all snarky, I'd call the pediatrician.

I also second the possibility of acid reflux. My DS turned out to have silent reflux. He was on Zantac for about 4 months.
  • You might have to alter your diet. Try different things like cutting out dairy and citrus. It's no fun, but that can really help his belly.
  • For the massage, does it have to be almond oil or will baby oil work?

    @laurlaurlaur no, will try that.

  • Baby oil will work too.
  • Crap. I love cheese. I'll give the no dairy a shot! I'd pretty much stand on my head for this poor kiddo if it helped.

@veronicaann143, I seem to remember it taking 3-4 days of absolutely no dairy to notice a difference. Apparently LOs can be sensitive to a certain protein found in cow's milk, and it takes several days to flush it from breastmilk.

I've also heard certain veggies can cause gassy breastmilk, like broccoli and garlic. And fenugreek can do it too, so maybe you don't have to give up cheese. But good for you for taking the effort to troubleshoot. GL!

Yes, it's the casein (sp?) in dairy that hurts bellies. Look for that in ingredients lists. It's hard at first because everything has dairy in it, but may work.

If you are working on diet altering, you will have to cut something for 4-5 days at a time to see if it will work.

I feel for you. It's hard to see them in pain and equally as hard to figure out the cause sometimes. You are a great momma, so keep on keeping on!
  • Interesting about putting the drops in the bottle. Any idea why that was better than just in his mouth?

  • Like PP said its most likely something in your milk, and you should call the pedi. But for instant gratification my pedi taught me this trick, not sure why it works but if you put the baby's feet on a mirror and kinda rock and sing (the baby is in a sitting position back against you chest) it helps. I have no clue why. It won't fix the problem but it's calming and sometimes gets the gas out bc they relax for a few minutes.

Is he uncomfortable from the gas or just gassy? I just ask because EVERY diaper change when I wipe LO he farts a TON and ends up pooping more, but it doesn't seem to bother him at all?! And I agree w the burping, I'm terrible at patting hard enough when there this little, well because small! But noticed if I get him high enough on my shoulder and pat it's much more effective...maybe give that a try?

Edit: I just re read and see you said he gets fussy when he has to fart... My bad, no sleep is hard ;) but I have had success w gripe water in the past w my other LOs... Fx it works for you LO
  • Yeah definitely uncomfortable. But right now he's been ok for like 10 mins and it's awesome! Not due to any of these tricks yet but just a nice reprieve.

Are you noticing he seems to be "better" while sitting upright? Or laying on your chest upright? I only ask because my 3rd DS had reflux that I thought was actually gas pain, but the pedi said I probably had a less fussy baby (I guess they can get really bad if its bad, like screaming arching back ) because I kept him on me upright most of the time.... Just a thought

Well maybe keep an eye and see if it helps/makes a difference, if so def bring it up at doc apt. Emerson was on Zantac and it made a world of difference... No more fussy baby.... He actually became an insatiable lil piggy ;) but was no longer uncomfortable... Hope you guys figure it out and he gets relief ASAP.. ((Hugs))
  • Can you wear him?  Whenever my babies got gassy, putting them in the Moby wrap or some other carrier in an upright position and walked around- seemed to help things move along.  Good luck!

I have a moby and haven't used it yet. Will give it a shot today.

Don't panic if he seems to hate it at first.  DD would scream her head off while I was putting her in it but then she'd settle right down and usually passed out in about 5 min flat.

  • My DD had awful reflux. She was on 2 different meds and I cut out dairy for 10 months.
This may be too crunchy for some, but I would take her in the bath (or shower) with me when I knew her belly was really bothering her. She would calm down pretty quickly. The warm water and the skin to skin did the trick every time.
