Hi, ladies!

Short version: Our 3rd son arrived on Thursday January 23rd at 9:15am weighing in at 7lbs 5oz and 20.75" long via successful VBAC! He is gorgeous and we are overjoyed.

This was 100% OK'd by my doctor. It can be dangerous if you are not smart about it. I would never do anything to hurt my child. Seriously? CO is very popular way to induce labor and obviously nothing harmed my son! Much safer than a repeat c-section.

Damn, that's scary. Glad your son is okay despite the pneumothorax. I really hope you'll reconsider the castor oil induction route before you have any future children, because it could really harm the baby. Congratulations and enjoy your little one.

My nephew was in the NICU from CO. why does no one google this beforehand? I don't get it.

ETA- I'm assuming. But I feel it's an educated guess considering the meconium in the water.

Maybe castor oil is just common where I live, I know a TON of women that induced labor this way; it was no big deal. My water was perfectly clear and the only research I can find on it was dehydration as a risk. I kept hydrated and got an IV upon arriving which kept me well hydrated while in labor. Most midwives recommend it as a safe alternative to Pitocin. I was really surprised to see so many flames. I am really sorry if I offended anyone, I deleted not out of shame but because I was really excited about my babe being born and got nothing but harsh words. I read so many positive birth stories on the bump using castor oil, I did it with the best intentions and got the best outcome. I hope you all have equally happy endings!

Oh for fuck sake! Why do people change the original posts?? And I have said this before NO worthy doctor would suggest castor oil! And trust me any ding bat who try's this "method" the doc and nurses know when your Hershey squirting during labor that u took the stuff. This just sickens me! Some of us are so happy to be pregnant and would love to carry as long as possible and then you have selfish women evicting their poor baby's at there hand! It pisses me off! Ugh .....

It can cause the baby to pass meconium into your amniotic fluid. Which he can then ingest into his lungs. Which can kill him.

Which is why people get so pissed off about people using it like it's nothing.

I have never heard this before this post! Do you have any research on it? I really can't find anything. I found one study that showed the research suggesting what you are is outdated and unproven because most women that use it and that have meconium in their fluid are overdue and that in itself can cause meconium in the fluid, not necessarily the castor oil itself. I have seen three OBs in the last few weeks, none of which said it was bad to use. I can't imagine they are all quacks, and the nurses? None of them said anything other than it was safe. I go to a very good practice in my area, actually one of the best---obviously I trust what they had to say. The castor oil doesn't cross the placenta and the labor pains were the same as with my other kids...I guess it just doesn't make sense to me as how it would cause the baby stress?

That study your referencing also concludes with: "Our findings leave no justification for recommending castor oil for this purpose." When one study says there's evidence to prove it's dangerous and I creases meconium aspiration risk and another says there's no justification for using it, I can't imagine not erring on the side of safety.

I understand what you are saying if you go solely on that site. But it is in all of my pregnancy books and listed as a safe. I can't imagine so many women would use it if it harmed babies, much less list it in all of these books for new mommies. I am just saying I personally do not believe it is harmful, show me hard evidence it is and prove me wrong. Otherwise it seems there are a lot of women on here that are just bullies with no proof that they are even right. While at least my side as hundreds of years of experience as proof it works. Obviously it worked in my cases and many of my friends. None of us had stressed babies. Maybe we were really lucky, or maybe it doesn't effect the baby in any way, as most research suggests!

I don't think that's the point they're trying to make. If there are studies suggesting it is potentially dangerous and no reason to use it, then why would you risk it? I think it's more important to prove it's 100% safe rather than 100% unsafe.

But I think it's terribly selfish to put your child at risk by self inducing. An extra 2-4 weeks will not kill you... You have been pregnant for 38! This whole thing just makes me angry. Castrol oil is dangerous. Do something good for yourself.. Exercise, yoga ball, stairs, spicy food or a stupid natural endure not castrol oil.

Lurker from A14. When most people use castor oil they don't drink the WHOLE bottle! That's just crazy! I personally would never use it, but I know people in Germany use it. The midwives have a cocktail of things to help naturally induce labor BUT it only has an ounce or two of castor oil............ Any way luckily your baby is ok. I'm done have fun with this ladies

I'd imagine that would be plenty of time to wait it out and see. Also I'd be curious how hard she attempted to push for a Vaginal induction with LO. It sounds like, from previous posts that her OBGYN wanted the induction done due to prior complications with previous pregnancies. Fine. I would personally talk it out and push for an attempt at a vaginal induction then, not take an added risk of inducing myself when there is already concern for possible issues.

There is a considerable increase in the risk of uterine rupture with induction. I didn't see the original post, but it seems OP was a VBAC which is why it would matter to her. I would assume that is why pictocin wasn't an option for her. I am hoping for a VBAC and my doctor and I have discussed the significance of not using pitocin for a VBAC. There are also considerable risks with c-sections.

This is not to say that I would necessarily make this decision, but it is to say nothing we do is without risk.

I sincerely hope you wouldn't make this decision. Castor oil puts your baby at risk. There's far more risk to castor oil than to a repeat csection.

OP, I'm happy that you had a smooth delivery and your son is now here, but totally side eyeing you and your doctor. I brought this up to my doctor just to see (mixed reviews from lots of people) and he stared at me like I had 5 heads and said "ABSOLUTELY NO". I hadn't planned on it, I was just curious.

I do hope your son has a short stay in the NICU and you get to go home soon.

I'm so going to ask my OB about this tomorrow, I'm just really curious what the response will be. I was surprised that at our childbirth class the instructor listed castor oil as an option to induce a full term baby. She didn't say how much but said it should be taken with a high fat food like a milk shake. I personally ignored that. I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to go through that, but like I said- was surprised to hear it in the class.

In another thought. I too am going for a VBAC, but the doctors are giving me to 41 weeks to go into labor on my own AND they will try induction first before going to RCS. So I'm curious OP, why would your doctors put an early time limit on when you could deliver by and was there some reason why they wouldn't or you wouldn't want a medical induction? Am I really fortunate to have doctors that want me to deliver without intervention if at all possible?
