I'm Italian, German, and Scottish mostly. I think there's a smattering of French in there, too. DH is Irish, German, and Scottish. We're both very WASPy looking. Our child has a very big chance of being pale, blonde, and blue eyed.
I speak a tiny bit of Spanish. My roommate in college was fluent so we all tried to only speak Spanish at the apartment. I understand it better than I can speak it.
I am 1/4 Sioux, Scottish, Irish and Mexican. My dad was adopted and all he knows is that his dad was 100% Sioux and his mom was part Mexican. On my mom's side, we traced our lineage back to Pocahontas. DH is mostly Swedish and English. Neither of us speak anything other than English, although we both understand a lot of Spanish.
DH and I are both Canadian, but I'm half American (my mama) and my families are Russian and Polish. His mom and her family are German (she moved here in the 50s) and his dad's side is English (we don't talk to his dad anymore though).
I'm Jewish though, and he was raised atheist. His mom was so worried there would be a problem b/c he's German, but my family didn't care. So far we've been able to merge our heritages okay. I'm not really a practicing Jew, but the cultural aspects of it are important to me and I want our kids to know about them, and DH's always been cool with that thankfully.
I can read and write Hebrew, but can't just start speaking it. I also know some Spanish and French. I think DH just knows English and whatever bits of French we learned in school.
DH is 50% Russian Jewish, 50% British. HIs grandparents on his dad's side are Jewish. His grandmother is first generation American but his grandfather and their family moved here when they were children in the mid 1920's. His mother's family is British and have been in America for a while. He is fair skin, bright blue eyes and brunette. He looks very British.
I'm an Emancipated minor/orphan of a sorts. I'm kind of adopted but it's a long story and not legal and wasn't until I was 16 and older. I don't know who my father is but I did do ancestral genetic testing and found that I'm Scandinavian (Norwegian & Swedish), British and Polish from my mother. Since you have to have some paternal DNA to find out what ancestry you received from your father's side, I don't know that but I am tall, blonde hair, fair skin, blue eyes so i'm most likely Scandinavian, Polish, Russian, British, German of some sorts. The usual European mutt.
I took French all in middle school and high school and Spanish in college. I can read both but can no longer speak or write them well. DH can speak fluent Spanish and some Italian. He can read all romance languages pretty much.
We want our child to go to an International school from an early age to learn Chinese and German.
I am 1/4 Finnish 1/4 Swedish, and then bits and pieces of other things. I definitely show the Scandinavian roots! When I was little I could speak a tiny bit of Finnish (such a beautiful language) but now I can only speak English and bad Japanese. I was better at Japanese when I lived there in college! DH is Irish Syrian and Native American, and he looks like a pretty good amalgamation of all 3! Really pale, but with thick jet black hair, I often tell people he's my 6'4" Harry Potter. He doesn't speak any other languages. In our house what stands out the most is his Irish heritage, our last name actually has a family coat of arms so that's up in a few places.
I am mostly Irish. My paternal grandparents moved to the US from Ireland and became farmers/missionaries. My mom's family is Irish/German. I mostly identify with the Irish heritage though.
We like to say DH is a mutt He's got some English, German, Scottish, and probably some other things in there. I am converting him to my Irish traditions though!
I'm mostly Irish and English with a little bit of German and French.
H is mostly Irish on his mother's side. He doesn't know his father so we can only guess.
I took French in high school and one semester in college but I only know a few phrases now. I can still read it though. I started taking Spanish in college and still know enough to communicate. I understand a lot more than I can speak. H knows some Spanish too.
I'm 1/2 Native American and the other half a large combination. I only know, acknowledge, and associate with my Native side as it's the only side I have ever been involved in (pow wows, ceremonies, tribal meetings etc.) unfortunately I am not familiar with the language. My great grandfather/chief of our tribe just passed after years working to preserve the language and a book should be coming out soon so I feel I need to learn it!
SO is Hungarian and can say curse words in Hungarian. But he also makes delicious chicken and dumplings and palascintas (Hungarian crepes) so, fair trade off.
I'm German, Welsh, English. DH is mostly Chechoslovakian (yeah, I don't know how to spell that) with I think a little Polish mixed in. Neither of us speak another language. My parents and grandparents did not speak another language either, so I think my family must have been over here for a while. DH's father spoke Chech (he passed a way a few years ago, so I'm not sure how fluent he was) and there are/were still some family members living over there.
We tracked my great great great grandparents in my moms paternal side to Ireland which wasn't hard to figure out since their name is Murphy, my maternal great great grandma was full blooded Cherokee, and we think my dads side is irich, but we are not sure, so I go with Irish Indian.
DH's great grandpa was full blooded Indian, not sure which tribe, and his paternal side is German, that's all we know about his family.
I'm WASP through and through. My family on both sides is directly descended from the British. My DH is British and Irish, hence the O'Kelly as our child's middle name (should it turn out to be a he). We both have a teeny tiny bit of Cherokee in us. My great great grandmother on my mom's side was 100% Cherokee.
I think the most offensive thing that anyone has ever said to me is that DH and I make "Perfect aryan babies". This was a pediatrician too. Jerk.
I'm Irish, English, Welsh, German, Native American, and Swedish. Most of the mixing comes from my mom's side since my father's only Swedish and Irish. So I got a double dose of Irish. Not sure what SO's side is.
My heritage is a mix of most western European nations - a little more Scottish than most other things. Can't speak any other languages (although I am almost fluent in ASL).
My DH is half Filipino (also includes Chinese and Spanish), and I'm so glad that my baby will get to grow up with such an interesting family! (Interesting, nice, kinda crazy.) My husband can't speak any Tagalog, since his mother wanted them to be as "Americanized" as possible, which is too bad.
His mother and aunt did teach me lots of delicious Filipino recipes (lumpia, pancit, adobo, suman, etc.), and once I mastered them they declared me an honorary Filipino!
I am totally American but descendants long ago from both Poland and Nicaragua. My hubby is Israeli and Russian (directly). While I only speak English, I can read and say phrases in Hebrew. My husband knows Hebrew and Russian fluently. We are both Jewish. And I am sorry if this offends anyone but we had a funny moment about this... The ob/gyn was measuring the nasal bone on baby (looking for any abnormalities) and at the exact same time, my husband and I both said "baby looks Jewish!" (big nose...) The doc laughed and then said "guys... I'm really zoomed in to measure. It won't look that big." We were like "oh... Oops". He prob thinks we are terrible people!
Me: Irish (great grandparents born there), English (a small amount), and Puerto Rican (supposedly, may be Italian though. Little is known about my mom's birth father)
Hubby: Danish (his mom was born and lived in Denmark until she married his father in her 20s), Spanish (grandpa born in Spain), German
