Mattress thickness---STMs?

Hey all!

DH and I have our crib but somehow still have not been able to decide on a mattress. We know we want a foam mattress (from what I have researched, they are well reviewed and I really like the lightness concept for middle of the night accidents) however I am torn between two or three mattresses, the main difference being a 5 inch thickness vs a 6 inch. I have not heard anything bad about 6 inchers except for baby bargains which states that some sheets won't fit over a 6 inch mattress and can slip off (this being dangerous to LO)

Any STMs ( or anyone really) have any words of wisdom or recs???

Re: Mattress thickness---STMs?

  • Honestly, I hadn't noticed a thickness difference in mattresses available at the major retailers here near Toronto Canada. (Except the extra thin ones for play pens)

I'd look for firmness over depth.

For DS I got a mattress that is for infants on one side and toddlers on the other. Just flip it over at the right age.

I'm confused about how that would make middle of the night accidents easier?  Because you'd have to lift it up to change the sheets?  Normal mattresses aren't that heavy, and I've never had a problem lifting DD's, even while pregnant.  It seems like it'd be more annoying to have to deal with multiple light mattresses than having to deal with one heavier one.

That probably wasn't what you were looking for, though.  If you're going for ease of changing sheets, I would just use 2.

ETA: I'm an idiot.  Leaving my post for humor purposes only.  :)

  • If you know that a thicker mattress lends itself to slipping sheets, then go with the other one. It would be so frustrating to lose a sheet/mattress protector after a MOTN blowout and have a filthy mattress. IMO I always prefer things that make life easier.
  • I just measured both of our mattresses. DS's is 5 inches and LOs is 6 inches. Funny thing is that they're the same exact mattresses, except DS's was bought about 3 years ago. Anyway, I think I'd recommended a 5 inch mattress. We have 3 fitted sheets from Target and a jersey knit sheet that came with the bedding set. The sheets from Target are a struggle to get on the mattress, even at only 5 inches. They fit very tightly. I bet those same sheets aren't going to fit on LOs 6 inch mattress--they'll just be way too tight to stretch across. Wish I wouldn't known that before buying...! Oh well!
