GTKY: what is your heritage?

It's very early and I'm very bored. So...

This may or may not have been asked before but what's your heritage as well as your DH/SO's. I love hearing all the different backgrounds because everybody is mixed with something :) yay for diversity!

Also, do you happen to speak any other languages other than English?

I'm half Italian and half Puerto Rican. DW is African American, Native American and Italian. She doesn't speak anything and I just barely speak anything. I picked up bits and pieces of both Spanish and Italian from my grandparents on both sides. But my parents wanted me to grow up "Americanized" so I was never taught until high school.

avere una buona domenica! ;)

Re: GTKY: what is your heritage?

  • I'm a mix of a number of different things. Main ethnicity is Hispanic but also German, Irish, French, Mayan, Native American and Spanish. I'm not sure about my DH since his mom is adopted and his dad died when he was 8. If I had to guess I would at least saying he was either Irish or Scottish. The dude's hair is blond but his beard is fire red :) Plus, it's kinda fun that his birthday is St. Patrick's Day.

  • I'm a brown girl, native American, creole, and Irish. people are always very confused by my looks ( don't know why I looK normal) and DH is 100000% Mexican. he speaks Spanish first then English. I studied Arabic for a long time and I'm learning Spanish. I can't have DH and the baby plotting against me
  • I am 1/4 German, 1/4 Swedish and 1/2 English. My mom's parents immigrated from Germany and Sweden when they were kids. I identify mostly with my Swedish heritage and enjoy sharing that culture those in my life. My DH is part German and English.
  • @funnibunni80 - My father's side of the family is direct descendants of Priscilla Alden (John Alden's wife) who were also on the Mayflower. It's funny, John & Priscilla Alden can be found at the Plymouth Plantation (a reenactment historical place) and I tried telling them that Priscilla is like a gazillion times great grandmother of mine when I was 10yrs old. haha

I am 1/4 Portuguese then a ton of English/Irish/Scottish with some Northern Iroquoia and little other bits of European mutt & French Canadian.

DH is English/Irish mainly with some Lithuanian, and a wee bit of Scottish & French Canadian.

DH actually gets tanner than I do. My mom & brother are dark because of the Portuguese (mainland/Cape Verdian) and I'm one of the lighter cousins on the Portuguese side, though I look straight up Portgy.

Can't wait to see what our baby looks like. Curly hair for sure but I don't know if he/she will have my cute Portgy nose or Bri's angolo-saxon nose (either is fine but my whole family has my nose haha).

DH is German Jewish...he had relatives die in the camps and his grandmother was a survivor. We actually found her name at the Holocaust Museum in DC. It was intense.

DH and I are both a mixture of everything the British Isles have to offer and German. I also have some Delaware Indian mixed in there several generations back (its a really cool story that I'm working on writing into a novel). One of my ancestors signed the lease on the Mayflower (Robert Cushman, who was a passenger on the other ship that had to turn back), and another was the one of the youngest passengers aboard the Mayflower, and was the last passenger to die (Mary Allerton).

  • My DH is German, Italian and Native American.

My paternal grandfather was born in Australia and came over here to work and fell in love. His history is very French. My paternal grandmother was adopted, and always said that if somebody gave her up they must have had a good reason so she never wanted to know her heritage. When she died last year I had to go through all her things and found her birth certificate. She was born in a convent in New York in the 30's, and judging by the pale skin, natural red hair and freckles in our family we are pretty sure she was Irish. My maternal side is German.

  • I'm Irish, Scottish, English (English is a guess. My Grandfather's family was Irish for as long as we can tell, but his last name was English) and Italian (though my grandmother would slap me for not mentioning that she was Sicilian). DH is Polish and German. We will probably just tell our kids they are European.

DH and I each took French in middle and high school. He continued French in college while I took a semester each of Italian and Spanish. I've retained almost nothing other than "Do you speak English?" in each language. DH claims to be fluent in French but I'm pretty sure he means comprehension, not speaking.
  • I'm 50% Syrian and 50% Irish.  Although I look all Irish because of my coloring, my brother got the light Arabic coloring.

My husband is 50% Italian and 50% a mix (a little bit of Irish, Scottish, and some other European roots).

Our kids will be the most Irish (by a few percentage points) since it's the only nationality we have in common.

As for languages, I am terrible at them.  I remember very little of my HS French.  I do know a few words and phrases in Arabic from my childhood.  My husband speaks fairly decent Spanish, he is useful in translating when we travel abroad.

  • I'm like mamabc14! People are always asking me my background or just assume I'm whatever dark haired ethnicity they are. I've had people assume I'm Greek, Puerto Rican, Hawiian, Eskimo, and Italian. I'm totally an American mutt. Slovak, French, English, and possibly some Native American. My Nana always said we were Native and she and all her kids have straight black hair but we've never been able to trace her ancestry in that direction.

I'm mostly English and Cornish with a very tiny smattering of French, German, etc. many generations back in the family tree. The hubs is mostly of Scandinavian background.

I've had the most success with Japanese as a second language, though I can handle some French, too. I've also briefly studied Spanish and sign language with very limited success. I also know some random Korean words learned from friends; the Korean kids I meet get a big kick out of my limited white girl vocabulary.

  • I am mostly Irish and identify as such. I have dual Irish/US citizenship, as does DS and as will this baby.

Two of my grandparents came over in the 1920s from Ireland so on that side I am second generation. On the other side my grandmother says she was half Irish, half German but there was some issue in her family when she was little so who knows, we never met any of them. My remaining grandparent was adopted but his adoptive family was mainly Irish.

  • 1/4 Croatian, and then a random mix of English, Irish, French, and a hint of German.

On my mom's side I can trace back to William Brewster on the Mayflower.  On my dad's side, I've been able to trace back to 1650's in France.

I knew enough Spanish (3 years and a trip to MEX in HS)  to get me by while teaching in AZ, but it's fading fast.
there are two motivations in sports, which is yours?
  • I'm half Swedish.  My father's parents came to the U.S. when they were around 16 and then learned to speak English.  On my mother's side we aren't sure but we think it is a mix of Scottish/English something or the other.

I know sign language.  I know some Spanish from taking 2 years of it in high school myself and then interpreting Spanish class for different deaf students.

  • DH is black. I'm half black and my dad is Native American and English (British English). My Dad was really into tracing heritage--fun fact apparently I'm related to Bonnie of Bonnie and Clyde.

I get mistaken for being Hispanic all the time to the point of annoyance. People tend to start speaking to me in Spanish all the time assuming. I speak some Spanish but only use it when necessary at work. It's funny because I look just like my parents and neither look Hispanic.

  • I'm Hispanic all the way. Both my parents were born in Mexico . Although my dad looks like he is native to Mexico but not mexican. I'm first generation. Spanish was my first language but I'm #4 of 5 kids and I spoke English before going to kindergarten. I still speak Spanish fluently.
SO is also mexican on both sides. We've never actually tried to trace his heritage but I wouldn't be suprised to find out that his mothers side is partly Native American because of the dark hair, high cheek bones, almond shaped eyes. Both his parents were born in America. They didn't teach any of their 8 kids Spanish cause they wanted them to be Americanized.
  • i am mostly Irish which is one of my most dominate genes as i am very fair, redish/brownish hair and lots of freckles though none really on my face. I believe my fathers side has a mix of English/Scottish. I have older family members currently working on family trees and history so i am slowly learning about them.

Dh is Belgium and not sure what else he is mixed with but they mostly just say Belgium.

We have a great mix Alcohol and chocolate :)
